Have you bought one? How good (or bad) was it?

ive paid for my 1st bag and collecting at 7pm. It was only £2.95 so hoping for some nice bits!

Don't be surprised if Greggs cancel pick up at the last moment. They often run of out stock. Annoying

I think they are great and have had some amazing bargains. Only had one disappointment and I get 2-3 a week. You need to be creative and not fussy about what you eat. Freezer space is highly recommended.
Those who say they didn't get good bags because they didn't like the food it contained don't get the concept. I love not knowing what I'm going to get.

The whole point is to prevent waste. Cancellations means no wastage and are part of the process you sign up to.

I did quite a bit of this and then stopped. We didn’t have a local Morrisons but I heard they did the best bags. Costa and Greggs weren’t great. M&S through our local petrol station was hit and miss. Sometimes it was ready meals which were great. Then I started getting rotten salad and some bizarre things that I just would never have bought otherwise. So I stopped.

Ladysaurus · 11/04/2023 16:33

Got a Toby breakfast. That was good.

Tend to prefer olio. I have a few good volunteers near me and near work so I can often get a good haul of veg and bread to fill up the freezer and a few random treats.

CleaningOutMyCloset · 11/04/2023 16:33

I've done it a few times, they've been pretty good. From Starbucks a sandwich, cakes, Greggs sandwich, sausage roll and cakes/doughnuts etc.

Minniebojangles · 11/04/2023 16:36

The best ones have been m&s/wild bean , always tremendous value .

emmathedilemma · 11/04/2023 16:48

I've done Morrisons and the mini Waitrose that's at a local garage (so doesn't stock a huge range). The Morrisons one wasn't ready when i went to collect it so I had to wait while someone ran round the store collecting yellow stickered items. I got a very random mix of items from both and nothing that I could have actually made a meal out of. The Morrisons one had 3 loaves of white bread so it's lucky I'd just defrosted the freezer and had plenty of space in it!
I think I'd rather just go to the store and pick my own yellow stickered items to save food waste.

NancyDrawed · 11/04/2023 16:50

My best was a Morrisons local (petrol station) one up north, which had two pizzas, some pitta breads, a bag of salad, two ready meals, some apples and some pre cooked chicken pieces. And when I got there to collect the lady behind the counter gave me some flowers that were past their best, too. I don't think I'll ever get one as good again!

My other tip is that if you are going to a buffet restaurant type place for one, aim to be there at the start of the allocated time. A chinese restaurant local to me is part of the scheme at lunchtime and in the evening and because I got there at the very end of the time slot, it was quite slim pickings, although still plenty for 2 people to have a decent meal.

I'm really happy to have them, both to reduce food waste and for a bit of a pot luck variety in our diets

Comedycook · 11/04/2023 16:53

I got a Greggs one once...it was brilliant.

And a local bakery near me does one for £3.99. last week it contained 3 sausage rolls, a samosa, a pasty, two loaves of bread, about 12 bread rolls, two eclairs, two teacakes, three iced buns. It's really good value

ssd · 11/04/2023 16:55

I've gave up on them.

Last one i got was costa and i got 6 vegan cheese and ham toasties which were rank.

Twoweeksandcounting · 11/04/2023 16:57

Best ones for me have been Millie’s Cookies - £3.99 and they have usually contained around 8-10 fully intact cookies, plus a handful of ones that have broken in half or are crumbling a bit.

Have also very occasionally managed to snatch up a 6 box of Krispy Kreme for £4.

I have had some success with Gregg’s - occasionally a couple of items we wouldn’t choose for ourselves, but that’s all part of it, and they don’t go to waste as someone in the house will eat it.

daffodilandtulip · 11/04/2023 16:58

I did quite a few when they first came out. I loved the surprise and the value. Morrisons have stopped doing it and Starbucks and Costa it's always the same things (vegan breakfast baps). Greggs was so poor I got my money back.

Chattycathydoll · 11/04/2023 17:02

Our local Costa one is great. Whole tray of tiffin slices, 2 toasties, a roll, a bag of mini muffins & slice of cake.

costa in big town nearby though was a disappointment, several egg sandwiches and a ham toastie.

Greggs has been consistently good, local sweet shop was rubbish, a ton of hideous aniseed things and some toffees. Starbucks was also okay.

DD likes the excitement of it, we usually get one before the train to her dad’s.

Madcats · 11/04/2023 17:02

I've done a fair few. I live in a touristy place so we have lots of coffee shops etc (some of whom participate). I can get a "bread bag" from a local ££ cafe/sandwich shop which is usually a large sourdough, ciabatta and a small rye loaf (competition for these is fierce - usually sell out about 10 minutes after they are listed). Otherwise the tea shops often give us some danish pastries and a couple of cakes.

southlondoner02 · 11/04/2023 17:02

I've had some good ones. Pret has been good- lots of hot food and quality sandwiches. Also done some fancy local bakeries and got amazing bread and pastries I wouldn't normally afford. Never braved supermarkets though - assume you might just end up with the tail end of the yellow stickers

AtleastitsnotMonday · 11/04/2023 17:07

I'm not big on carbs so tend to avoid them. That said the best I have ever seen was on holiday in a European capital. So many bags available of every type of cuisine, available throughout the day and evening and all €2/€3.

Dixiechickonhols · 11/04/2023 17:18

Greggs is a good one and consistent. It’s usually a pasty, sausage roll, 2 sandwiches and a cake or donut for £2.95.
Starbucks is hit and miss - often lots of vegan items.

CeriB82 · 11/04/2023 19:06

Well!!

i got 2 ham salad baguettes, 1 ginger bread, 1 jam doughnut, egg sandwich, sausage rolls snd a cheese/onion slice.

im happy!

That's fab Op! I've only done it once for Yakinori and it was rotten, so wouldn't bother again. If I didn't know how nice Yakinori was normally, I'd never eat there as what I got was dried, burnt and tasteless. Quite obviously what was left from the days trading but not nice at all and should have been thrown away rather than charging for it!

Dixiechickonhols · 11/04/2023 19:25

Good haul!

OldTinHat · 11/04/2023 19:41

Woohoooo!!

CheeseLouisePlease · 11/04/2023 19:44

Greggs is good, varies from branch but you get good stuff.
Morrisons swings between amazing and dreadful.
Costa/Starbucks just off load their vegan crap.

I do complain though if the bag isn’t up to scratch and get refunded. I’ve had bags with nothing in them and ones with rotten veg them.

There are other places near me that sell very little fresh , like spar, and they have bags every day, I don’t even fancy trying them.

MissJam · 11/04/2023 19:49

I’ve only ever got one, from upper crust when I was in the area. Paid £3.99, got a cheese and tomato baguette, a bacon roll and a sausage and cheese roll. Considering the baguette alone would have cost £4.95(!) it was ok.
Only ever seen a local Aldi one when I couldn’t get it, but the rest are at petrol stations quite far from me and I don’t drive.
How was your first bag OP?
