faultywiring · 11/04/2023 12:25

I am a SAHM and dh works full time, only min wage but he does about 50 hours.
Would I be able to get Universal credit and stay at home dc are 5 and 7 both at school.
I don't want job seekers as I'm not looking for jobs but just wondering if UC was an option or if I'd be expected to look for work?

Dont listen to the jealous trolls. 😀
Of course you can stay home and get UC. My friend does it as her husband is on low income. If someone chooses to work then let them but they shouldnt be jealous of those who dont.
If the system entitles you to the money you shall have it!

Tax money! Tax you pay go towards hospitals and schools and denfense for our country. Some goes on benefits too. But I dont hear you complaining about people using hospitals and schools? I pay tax and I am happy it goes tonthe people who needs ir most. It is my contribution to society. OP said her husband works 50 hours a week? He may be on minimum wage, 2K a month is not a lot to bring home to pay for mortgage/ rent and food etc. But he works and just because she wants to see if there are any extra benefits to help you judge her. Stop and think.

You don’t get it, do you?

Most people don’t choose to be in hospital. For those who do (such as for cosmetic surgery), they fund it themselves.
£2K maybe isn’t a lot for a family, no, but there’s nothing stopping her working between school hours to add a bit of money into her household income.

She can Sky+ This Morning and Loose Women.

At 5 and 7 many working couples use wraparound childcare (we picked a primary school that had both a breakfast club and after school club) and pay for various holiday clubs. In my case I'm a teacher, so don't need holiday childcare. In terms of sick days, we just have to split them between DH and I, which can be stressful when we both have a hard day to miss at work.

UC is based upon your earnings. There's a lot of misinformation on this thread it's not just solely your hours it's what you earn too.

Ring CAB for advice ask them to do a calculation for you.

Agree with this. No idea why people keep giving information on UC which is totally inaccurate. People are better off just going onto an online calculator. The poster upthread who said the cut off is 26k ids thinking of tax credits thresholds form 20 years ago !

in application and you’ll soon know. But my hubby is full time and I stay at home

With school age children or younger children?

I don't know anyone who works for a sense of pride. I certainly don't. I work to pay the bills. How many people would continue working if they won the lottery because "pride?"

Wantthisfriend · 12/04/2023 19:36

Lots of comments here about 'people paying you not to work'. I wonder how many of those also support 'paying people to work', by giving them subsidised or taxpayer funded childcare... If ones job doesn't support childcare costs, its time to stay at home and look after ones children.
Anyway OP I can't give you an accurate answer, but I hope everything works out for you and your obviously hardworking partner.💐

Very unlikely that a full time job wouldn't cover after school clubs and breakfast club. The problem many people have is affording childcare for preschool children. There are many other options to people in two parent families - school hours jobs, part-time work, weekend work, full time using after school clubs, becoming a child minder etc.

It is good for you mentally and gives you a sense of self worth. That is what I meany plus pride in providing for my children.

You surely must have a sense of pride. Going to work because we all need money or nicer clothes is just part of the reason.

Going to work means you have some decorum about you as a person also, it means you have a sense of pride. Don't get me wrong we all have days where we can't be arsed or periods where you get fed up who doesn't?

I would definitely do some form of work eventually if I won the lottery. I suspect most people would do something there's only so much shopping you can do. You need a purpose too.

Beverlybeier · 12/04/2023 21:19

You would be expected to look for work, unless you had an illness which prevented you from being able to work, or was a carer for someone. The other thing to be aware of is that national insurance contributions are no longer paid with child benefit once the children are over 12, this may affect your pension. Have a look at a benefits calculator such as www.entitledto.co.uk this will show you what uc would pay you if you met the commitments they require.

Benefits Calculator - entitledto - independent | accurate | reliable | www.entitledto.co.uk

Check what benefit entitlement you are entitled to. The entitledto benefits calculator will check which means-tested benefits you may be entitled to e.g. tax credits, universal credit, housing benefit …

Whats wrong with going online and checking out ehat she is entitled too. She is looking after 'tomorrows' workforce, her children! Perhaps she likes looking after her husband! Sorry about mis spelled words earlier....had just woken up. Lol. Funny nobody said anything about 😳that. But I got your back up with saying she was working looking after children. Why shouldnt you get paid for looking after your own children? Well.......

With that level of grammar, I can see why you’re such a strong advocate for not working!

That's fine. She can do all of those things but not expect those of us who work to pay for her to do it.

if your purpose is in your job and not your children ( if you have them) then you are doing life very wrong,

Cloudtime · 12/04/2023 21:57

You will be expected to look for work as your children are school age. I’m now a single parent and have no family support with childcare . You will be expected to re think your usual work areas/ habits to find work that fits in with available childcare not your preferences . I have gone from being a solicitor to working for minimum wage in a warehouse . I use a childminder for school runs and school holidays are a mix of each parent using holiday entitlement and holiday clubs / activity days . UC will pay 85% of your childcare costs if you’re entitled to claim. I part time as holiday entitlement wouldn’t cover the school holidays otherwise . It’s hard but do able .

Singapore4 · 12/04/2023 21:58

@NewNovember I think what YOU are doing wrong is being closed minded. I'm a single parent and I cannot afford to live off of £80 odd pound a week.

No where did I say my child wasn't my purpose. Going to work to benefit my child doesn't mean I don't have a purpose. Don't project YOUR feelings onto me.

A JOB keeps a roof over our heads, heating our home, electric running is that too hard for you to comprehend? My Sons 8 and we have travelled abroad since he was 18momths old.... this doesn't come for free.

I have a life outside of motherhood. Rightly bloody so too. Just because I'm a mother that doesn't define me as a person.

It seems as though motherhood defines you though. That's your own perogative sweetie.

No I read your post you were quite clear you would work even if you were very wealthy as thst is what would give you your purpose. No point tying yourself up in knots trying to denying it.
My children give me purpose in life so donother things work certainly does not. Your children were not even mentioned.
