Do you buy your kids Easter eggs?

And if so how old are they?

Mine and nearly 2 and 4. I’ve never got them eggs and tbh I don’t really give them all that we get given. They get given so many 6+ each and they are only small. They get the odd one but they get so many. DH and I tend to scoff them instead… In fact I’m eating one right now.

But at nearly 2, they will be interested in it more than at 13 months, and will enjoy having it with their older sibling. A bit of chocolate, even every day, really won’t hurt them, so I’m not sure what the ‘it won’t do them any favours’ having it is all about.

Many on Mumsnet have a very odd attitude to kids and chocolate...and food in general really. That’s definitely won’t do them any favours.

I think chocolate everyday is far too frequent tbh. It’s not good for their teeth if nothing else.

I'm with you, OP. The first few years, we told family not to bother giving eggs - they know we hadn't given any chocolate and are quite conscious of health and not having sugary snacks at least until they're old enough that it's unavoidable! So my eldest had her first Easter egg at 3 - just one small one, and I wouldn't have bothered but it was lockdown and we just felt like it. From 4 onwards, probably 4-5 in total including one (small) egg from us, but spaced out over the year like you say. I'd also eat a bit if there were loads! My youngest is only just on solids, but one family member (who full well knows our stance) has already posted an egg for them! That will be eaten by DH and me.

At 6, my eldest now gets way more sweets and chocolate than I'd like. It just mounts up so much from Easter, Halloween, birthday, Christmas, party bags, grandparents treats, and so on! But she has an excellent memory, so even months later, she knows what's in that cupboard! 😂

It's not Easter Sunday yet and you are scoffing them already.

You sound really OTT. Give them a child sized portion, brush their teeth and all will be well. Neither of my kids are overweight of have fillings. And most importantly they have a healthy attitude to food.

Does the 4 year old not ask why you have eaten his eggs?

So we parent differently? What a shock.

I don't buy for my two now as they are adults and I haven't bought for my fosterling either as they are enterally fed and I find that chocolate doesn't always blend down well and can block buttons. I did make Easter cupcakes though and blended those down with some milkshake so they could join in the Easter fun.

dizzygirl1 · 07/04/2023 21:47

Yes easter eggs and an egg hunt.

CheshireCats · 07/04/2023 21:47

Eating their eggs is awful.
If you are so sure it's fine, why not tell all the people who bought them for your children?

2chocolateoranges · 07/04/2023 21:47

Yes I do they are 21 and 19. I also buy for dd’s boyfriend too.

my mum still buys me and dh an Easter egg and I’m 46 .

CraftyGin · 07/04/2023 21:47

We've never done Easter Eggs.

This year we have foster child who in full of expectation. I reminded her that we did not do Hallowe'en, nor anything to do with Santa, so hopefully she has got the message.

Yes. I ask him once we’ve opened them if I can have some too. He says yes. So I’m probably eating the youngest. Tbf it was a mini eggs and I don’t think that was suitable for a nearly two (but still one) year old. Yes he could have eaten the eggs. Oh well.

Why did you ask others opinions then? Surely you know everyone ‘parents differently’. You’re OTT, good luck with that.

I’m sure the ladies children won’t be scarred for life because their mum ate a bit of their chocolate.

Jesus Christ

I’m not secretive about it. I say we’ll share. Nobody cares and if they do they don’t care enough to stop.

YANBU, OP.

I've never understand why people give so much chocolate to really young kids at Easter and Christmas. It's possible to give them a few chocolate treats without overdoing it.

My DCs are 6 and 2. We've bought lots of small eggs to do an Easter egg hunt in the garden. I haven't bothered buying them a big egg each. They got some chocolate today (we visited family) and on Easter Sunday they will get an egg each from my mum. I think extended family might give them eggs too. But even without extras they will have plenty.

I'm not mean with treats, I let them have treats regularly, I buy them treats 2-3 times a week, if we have a meal out or see family or whatever I let them have the desserts and treats on offer.

I eat far too much chocolate myself, I have very little self control tbh, and I have to limit the amount I buy - I don't tend to have chocolate in the house as it doesn't last long. So if my kids were given ridiculous quantities of Easter eggs, I would find it very difficult to ration them carefully for months on end.

nicetoseetgesunsout · 07/04/2023 21:49

Yes -mine are 24 and 18 and I also buy for their boyfriend/girlfriend. I buy for my great neice who is 5. No longer buy for my neice and nephew.
My mum is bloody crazy and buys everyone she's ever met an Easter egg. she gives me and my sister and all of her grandchildren £15 in a card and We are in our 50s and my sister is a millionaire (I'm not, I'm skint) And the money comes wrapped with Easter themed ribbon. My mum keeps john Lewis in business.

tigger1001 · 07/04/2023 21:50

Mine are teenagers and we have never bought them Easter eggs. They get them off family members. In the past, the chocolate has lasted months so didn't want to add to that.
