Do you buy your kids Easter eggs?

And if so how old are they?

Mine and nearly 2 and 4. I’ve never got them eggs and tbh I don’t really give them all that we get given. They get given so many 6+ each and they are only small. They get the odd one but they get so many. DH and I tend to scoff them instead… In fact I’m eating one right now.

Yes and I wouldn't eat the ones bought for them from other people either.

RufustheSpeculatingreindeer · 07/04/2023 21:04

We did an easter egg hunt on the green outside our old house until the children were about 17, 14 and 12 😀

Percypiglover · 07/04/2023 21:04

I abject 2 and almost 5 year old they get a small egg from us and a book each. They will get from others we just give them a little at a time.

Dc are 16 and 15

Have bought eggs in previous years but just can't afford them this year. They haven't mentioned them so I assume they aren't bothered.

Chocolate lasts ages. 🤷🏻‍♀️ You said nearly 2 and 4. It’s not poison, except on mumsnet. 😂

Nearly 2 is still one?

I don’t know DH got a bar out his pocket today that was white and went out April 22.

DD will get an egg from us, and has a couple of others already from family members.

We would normally buy her a two or three small, inexpensive gifts rather than chocolate but she needs a bigger bike, so she's just getting an egg - token gesture from the "Easter Bunny"

So you don't buy them Easter eggs because they " get so many" yet you eat them?! That's awful, eating your children's gifts when you don't even buy them any. Do you not buy them Christmas or birthday gifts because other people do?

We have three grown up DC, we buy them all Easter Eggs.

We do get them birthday and Christmas gifts but we don’t go mad because I feel they get so much from other people. Clearly we get them presents that are important to them (within reason). But no, I don’t shower them with gifts for the sake of it.

that said. I barely got my 1 year old anything for Christmas because he has no idea. When they’re old enough to recognise who got what then I will make sure they get something from us. But they’re not there yet.

Kids get an egg from us.
It's usually the only one they get (teen and tween), although PiL gave them one between the 2 of them today.

Ditto. I think it's awful actually. Eating a gift given to your child when you don't buy them for your own children. Mean and petty.

katiewil · 07/04/2023 21:18

Yes both my DDs get eggs off me and both sets off GPs and I do a little Easter egg hunt for them
They also get a little basket full of bits like bubbles, sticker books, pens (stuff they need and stuff they will use now the weather is nicer)
Whatever they don't eat we usually melt down and make rice crispie cakes or something like that..
Kids are only little once...

MyMachineAndMe · 07/04/2023 21:19

Yes, I have bought them a big one, a normal one and an egg hunt box of smaller ones. Someone else also bought them a normal sized Easter egg.

I bought a big egg each for me and dh.

That's really shitty not to give your children a gift that someone has bought for them.

As for having chocolate left over from
Christmas-try harder.

They “get” them. They are passed to them when they’re received. Not smuggled in like elicit drugs. But they go in the cupboard and get eaten, some by them, some by me and DH.
They just become collective eggs. They don’t keep track. I’m pretty confident they have no idea. I’m sure next year my DS will keep count - I won’t eat them then 😂

The kids still at home get a couple

woodlandtrees · 07/04/2023 21:26

Yes. Both DCs are coming home from University tomorrow Smile

Beantag · 07/04/2023 21:29

Presumably the people who buy them for your children are people you know well, why not just say instead of chocolate would you consider getting x, or no thanks. I can't explain why because I know rationally it's not hurting anyone but the thought of someone choosing and buying an egg for a child and then the parents scoffing it gives me the ick. Also agree with others just break them up and give bits here and there, you could even melt the eggs and make rice crispy cakes or whatever.

Try harder to what??
DC 1 can't eat too much chocolate due to medical issues (advice from her consultant).
DC2 is still very young.

Easter eggs can be quite large! They last ages.

Those that know me well do exactly that - get a little gift because they know I feel the kids get too many. If I hadn’t got that arrangement they’d be getting even more.

My Dh has a large family and some are from extended family/friends passed by grandparents. So I can’t really make those demands of them. Plus some probably cost £3 and there’s about 15 cousins so if you replace all of those with a fiver/gift instead it makes a kind gesture into a big faff. Eggs are easy, personalised gifts less so.

The kids do get to eat them. I said that quite clearly. But as someone said eggs are pretty big for such small people. They often start them and I finish them.

We are talking about toddlers here people.

We make crispy cakes too. My Ds4 loves baking 🥰

Q2C4 I wouldn't eat an Easter Egg that someone gave me for the DC but I do ration consumption - we still had some left at Christmas last year.

9 month old chocolate ! Why not eat your kids choc?? Donate to food bank instead maybe ?

I don’t know DH got a bar out his pocket today that was white and went out April 22.

But at nearly 2, they will be interested in it more than at 13 months, and will enjoy having it with their older sibling. A bit of chocolate, even every day, really won’t hurt them, so I’m not sure what the ‘it won’t do them any favours’ having it is all about.

Many on Mumsnet have a very odd attitude to kids and chocolate...and food in general really. That’s definitely won’t do them any favours.

I honestly think the amount of chocolate parents will allow their kids is obscene. Where do people think the obesity crisis comes from, clearly not Easter alone. But the expectation that such small children should consume such vast quantities is pretty baffling. Everything in moderation but Easter is glutinous and we don’t carry that through to our day to day lives. Fine for a day but there’s too much for a day.

Despite scoffing a majority I’m still slim btw before anyone says. My kids don’t cover the mileage I do running…
