I started an English literature degree with the Open University in September and I love it.

I haven’t told anyone I’m doing it except DH. I decided I’d see how the first year went first in case I couldn’t do it (I have ADHD and some other things which is essentially why I didn’t go to uni at 18 - I’m 35 now) but it has gone surprisingly well. Realising I can do it has really boosted my confidence.

I haven’t mentioned it at work either, I’m fairly senior now (worked my way up from entry level) and I don’t want to advertise the fact that I didn’t go to uni, especially not to junior employees who all seem to have multiple degrees!

Planning to leave my job next year and go back to university

Gradually binning my mental neighbour's old toys one by one.

We live in a block of flats. We aren't allowed to put things in communal areas because it's a fire hazard. Fair enough.

I left a small pile of books outside my door, tucked to the side so not actually in anyone's way, ready to go to the charity shop. She took a fucking picture of them and put it on the neighbourhood Facebook page! They were only there for three days.

Since then she's put a load of her son's manky old toys in a box in the hallway 'for the other kiddies to play with' so on a semi regular basis I pick one up and bin it. And I drop a couple of grapes into her festering welly boots that she also leaves out in the hallway.

Petty as fuck, yes. But also satisfying.

Urinating on my compost. Don't ask me... It's a French thing. My Grandmother used to do it.

Great compost activator. You can also pour in any beer dregs and I’ve been told flat cola will work too.

Planning a party for our Silver Wedding in August, and then going to Canada for 3 weeks in September. Been planning the trip for 15 years.

Oooh, whereabouts in Canada?

Wowzers. I think you might be the issue here.

Good luck!

I'm meant to be finishing off a TMA for A335 right now and I start my last course of my degree (English Literature and Creative Writing) in October. I started my degree when DC2 was a baby in 2008 and life just kept getting in the way (in that time I split from exP, met and married DH and moved house twice among many other things!)

I have to admit very few of us have liked A335 compared to the other literature courses so far though. Many of us can't wait to see the end of it.

I've actually been getting pretty decent scores in every TMA so far though and I have to admit I've not actually read any of the set books in their entirety. Blush Many of the assignments have been about comparing critical essays and doing lots of extra reading rather than it based on the actual novels so I've obviously read more of those and read the important passages for what I've needed.

Despite this, PLEASE don't let me put you off, I've actually really enjoyed my degree so far and it's just advanced creative writing I have left before I'm done (after this TMA and the EMA of course) and I'm so excited.

You have a lot of amazing books to read in your degree, and if you plan ahead better than me (and don't procrastinate on MN so much!) then you'll have a brilliant time. 😁

Tarkan · 06/04/2023 00:40

I should add that I really did mean the procrastination comment at myself and not anyone else. I'm currently procrastinating away from TS Eliot and I don't think I'm even going to be writing my essay about him. Blush

I wish I had something going on that no one knows but I can't keep my big mouth shut! 😆

Enjoy your trip

Ditto, all I do by way of interests now is knit or read, and since I’m in a knitting group, I don’t have any projects nobody knows about. My writing days ended years ago. (Unless the diary for tracking Miss Megacolon’s medications and trips to the litter counts.)

I’m doing two masters degrees at the moment. One of them most people are aware of, the other is a secret. Each university is unaware I’m enrolled elsewhere as both only allow concurrent candidature under strictly limited circumstances, which I didn’t meet. I feel like such a rebel 😈

May09Bump · 06/04/2023 01:04

We've been paying for the deficit the local foodbank has across the summer holidays for the last couple of years (less people donate for various reason's over summer)- not told anyone and asked the charity to keep it private. As I put my children to bed over summer - I have a sense of peace that I've done my best to ensure other little ones are ok too and their parents have been able to access what is needed. I would never seek recognition, but mention it here as I must admit the sense of peace I feel was unexpected.

This made me laugh, wonder how many people google whether it's a thing :) Hope your compost heap is secluded!

Paying off our mortgage. There's only a small amount to go. It'll take 6-12 months depending on if I can find a job soon.

We're on one income with two primary aged DC & live frugally. Most friends/family assume we are struggling but we are just careful with money.

You sound like how we live!
We paid our mortgage off just before my 30th birthday and it was the best feeling in the world. Zero help from anyone. We followed Dave Ramsey, and we were on one income for a long period of that.

You will feel incredible when you’re done. Well done you!

I am planning all the things that my parents, children and practically everyone thinks is unseemly for a (very nearly) 50 year old to do. The only person who knows even a little bit about it are my partner and my sister. They are the two people who know and love me best and support me. Its my birthday in a couple of months and that is when I am doing these things.

These things include, but are not limited to.....

Download for the first time in my life
Bar piercing
Another tattoo (probably taken 32 years for my mother to get over the first two I had at 18!)
Further madness with hairstyle and colour
Wearing an outfit for my 50th that is "too short for a woman of your age" according to ma
Finally starting my degree

I realise that this all sounds somewhat tame but you can take from that that my life has, thus far, been a woman looking at the horizon but never having access to a boat to reach it.

AngryBirdsNoMore · 06/04/2023 01:21

Having a bit of a mental breakdown I think.

PyongyangKipperbang · 06/04/2023 01:30

Just realised....

The only person who knows even a little bit about it are my partner and my sister

My partner is not also my sister, or vice versa! As Terry Pratchett would put it "that sounds like a very rural arrangement" Grin I can assure you that they are two very seperate people!

I was going say my partner but then realised that actually I have talked to my sister too and then didnt alter the sentence!

DeflatedAgain · 06/04/2023 01:31

Have booked myself in for a very large tattoo in June

humblemeep · 06/04/2023 01:32

I vape a lot more than I admit to most people.

I also check my ex's social media daily.

Every time I go into town I buy my children 10/11 big eggs each.
my children are adults and no longer living at home. The closest one lives 4 hours away.
I eat the eggs for breakfast or lunch or tea or just anytime 😊
I love Easter eggs. That’s my guilty secret

StoppinBy · 06/04/2023 02:03

Eating my inlaws Easter eggs... and then replacing them.... over and over 🤣.

Just about to go to the shop and replace the one I ate last night lol

CremeEggQueen · 06/04/2023 02:05

Donating an item or two to the food bank collection box every time I go in to the local shop (which is practically every day)
