What juice do you give to your kids?

How often? Trying to find something that won't rot their teeth. I had a lot of orange juice as a child and it really affected my teeth. Also used to give eldest a lot of own brand but realised with the artificial sugars she kept falling poorly. Same with me. I get a sore throat instantly. I get the apple and mango one from Asda but just wondering what to give to my kids.

Kids or not, I avoid juices with ascorbic acid (they affect my throat). The ones without are pineapple, tropical and orange and mango I find.

But I use them well diluted, almost as u would squash.

We like fresh orange juice from M&S but, as a family of 3, we drink about a small carton a week. My son, aged 4, has half a glass 2-3 times a week, normally late afternoon after I pick him up from nursery.
Occasionally I buy some Innocent smoothies (maybe once every few months).

pjani · 05/04/2023 09:49

I buy the Tesco own brand ones but make them up about 80% water 20% juice. And watch out for anything that has ‘drink’ in the title or anything that, when you look at the back isn’t 100% juice. Those are worse for you with added sugar.

None. Don’t give juice apart from as a very occasional treat (in a restaurant or similar). They’re used to water and I can’t see a benefit to all that additional sugar. They eat plenty of veg and a fair bit of fruit (but I also limit that if necessary).

SallyWD · 05/04/2023 09:51

I don't give them juice. They both like water (and occasionally milk). I do rarely give them a small glass of smoothie, simply because my son's a fussy eater and it's difficult to get fruit in to him.

stayathomer · 05/04/2023 09:52

We have the not from concentrate apple or orange juice- one glass with breakfast and they have to brush their teeth about half an hour later. The rest of the day it’s water, milk or any of the No added sugar ones you dilute (not always in that order unfortunately!) Youngest is 8

AbsoIutelyLovely · 05/04/2023 09:52

Zero unless they’re sick or it’s a birthday

mynameiscalypso · 05/04/2023 09:53

I don't. DS will have a smoothie sometimes if we're out (and like a PP, it's sometimes the only fruit he consumes so I let it slide). Other than that, he drinks water or milk.

Ridingfree · 05/04/2023 09:54

Water only here, as a real treat since DD turned 5 a sparkling water plain no fruit flavour, I know the carbonation is not great but I'm talking birthdays, Christmas and big celebrations for that. She actually only asks for water too, no interest in juice so does make it easier for us

7Worfs · 05/04/2023 09:56

Dentist advice is no juice at all.

Water and milk at home, unless ill and need fluids - then I give the juice from tinned fruit which is just water, fruit and sugar, no sweeteners etc.

Parties are the exception - they’ll have whatever is served.

dementedpixie · 05/04/2023 09:56

Do you mean fresh fruit juice or squash type drinks?
What ages are your children?

AreNotHere · 05/04/2023 10:00

None here either, we only drink water at home - has to be fridge cold though. Although 14yo dd has started to have a glass of fresh orange juice in the morning with her breakfast. I can’t police what the older kids have out of the house though!

GreyCarpet · 05/04/2023 10:02

We drink water at home.

eurochick · 05/04/2023 10:06

None, apart from special occasions or parties. She just drinks water.

Marblessolveeverything · 05/04/2023 10:09

Water only, juice as a very very rare treat - family celebrations etc. Mine are older now teen/tween and will ask for water over squash/juice etc. A number of friends have children needing fillings and yes some may be genetic but the same children drink cans of pop and juice on a semi-regular basis.

To be fair my children went to creches who were very strict - water only and the same at school so that really helped me form and keep their habits. We are not particularly strict with diet etc but after suffering years with my own teeth (caused by grinding) and paying for very expensive dental treatment I am trying to take as much precaution as possible.

EggyBreads · 05/04/2023 10:17

Water all the time here except for meals out or if we are on holiday.

sofabedsofa · 05/04/2023 10:17

Theres a strong argument for avoiding juice altogether. It’s either a huge sugar hit or, potentially worse, a potent mix of chemical sweeteners.

TheUsualChaos · 05/04/2023 10:20

None. Just water or milk. We have cordial sometimes when it's a birthday party or have family round but that's mainly because other people tend to expect it.

pannikin · 05/04/2023 10:22

Going against the grain, i give my 9 year old son squash. He's autistic and will only drink squash. We go to the dentist every 6 months and his teeth are fine. As long as he's getting fluids in him, I don't care.

massivesalads · 05/04/2023 10:22

Juice is the devil don't you know.
Anyone who gives it to their children should be reported to SS and forced to do a degree in nutrition 😉

On a serious note ds has water at home but when we're at softplay or the zoo etc he'll normally have a fruit shoot.

Sirzy · 05/04/2023 10:24

Whatever he will drink. Past few years it’s asdas orange squash or strawberry flavoured water and that’s it.

riotlady · 05/04/2023 10:27

DD is 5, she will sometimes have squash at home (just normal Robinsons) and usually a fruit shoot when we’re eating out.

But his body and teeth will literally disintegrate after the fruit shoot will it not?!

Yes, you can say 'they will drink water when they get thirsty enough', but sadly for some autistic DC this is not the case.

My autistic DC suffers from chronic constipation and cystitis and a big part of that is not drinking enough. It's a constant battle to get fluids in and sometimes I resort to fresh orange juice. I give it watered down with a meal as I think that's better for teeth that way.

I tried bottled water, as I think it tastes better than tap, but no luck.

MyMachineAndMe · 05/04/2023 12:34

Really watered down squash or tea. My dc have a lot of tea.
