What juice do you give to your kids?

How often? Trying to find something that won't rot their teeth. I had a lot of orange juice as a child and it really affected my teeth. Also used to give eldest a lot of own brand but realised with the artificial sugars she kept falling poorly. Same with me. I get a sore throat instantly. I get the apple and mango one from Asda but just wondering what to give to my kids.

Do you only drink water?

Yes. Plus the odd glass of red wine Smile

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/04/2023 15:50

None at home. Going out, she gets whatever she wants (Sprite, juice, whatever).

If they don't have it they don't miss it plus an endless caveat about needs and illness and SEN which drones on and on.

noimaginationforausername · 05/04/2023 15:50

Kids are 9 & 14 and we all drink squash!

Both will drink water when playing sport but at home they have squash, 14 y/o will have fizzy if we go out but me and the younger one don't drink fizzy.

Do you only drink water? Mine drink water at home, but just as I like to have a ‘treat’ drink when we’re out for a meal for example, so do they.

Basically, yes. I like fizzy water.

I don't like to distinguish between 'treats' and ordinary daily fare. It sets up a problem when sugar is highly valued or associated with specialness.

Mine seem to be coping fine with it so we’ll carry on with what we’re doing. They like pineapple juice so they have one when we go out for a meal. It’s nothing deeper than that.

I have yet to meet a parent that only allows their children to drink water or milk. I mean this thread is a good thing but it just does not seem representative of real life. Baffles me.

DS4 has mainly water and milk and also diluted squash with his meals a few times a week. He also drinks tea and hot chocolate.

That’s all we have in the house anyway though, we don’t drink juice or fizzy pop.

Really? Lots of parents don't buy juices or squash as they're full of sugar!

Water, milk, tea is perfectly adequate

Hi, I'm Terry. Pleased to meet you.

That's that sorted.

Bienemajas · 05/04/2023 15:58

I also worry that auch sweet drinks become a habit that's difficult to break.

MarshaBradyo · 05/04/2023 15:59

They don’t really need it.

We don’t buy any but usually there will be some at a party

Sudeko · 05/04/2023 16:00

Mine have a diluted glass of apple juice every day. They don't like smoothies or else they would have that too 😕

MadameOvary81 · 05/04/2023 16:01

I give mine water and occasionally I add a tiny bit of apple juice to flavour. I'm really conscious of the effect on his teeth as my own are an absolute disgrace due to my childhood diet. He gets enough sugar from fruit...and chocolate! So, I try to keep it out of his drinks, If I can.

Whereas I wouldn’t even think of giving my child tea but think the odd pineapple juice is fine. We’re all different.

I agree with you if we’re talking about an occasional fruit shoot at a birthday party. If we’re talking about what you have at home though then no one I know buys juices or squash for their kids.

Let's agree to disagree - pineapple juice contains a lot of sugar whereas a mint or rosehip tea contains none.

pistachioicecream · 05/04/2023 16:04

My "kids" are now 20 and 16, and we've rarely had juice in the house. Occasionally at Christmas I might buy orange juice for bucks fizz but that's about it.

They've always drunk water. I just never offered anything else so that was it!

Iluvfriends · 05/04/2023 16:04

I never gave my kids juice as youngsters and even now the youngest at 18 only drinks water.

Not in work, family or friendship circles, nope. I’m not advocating it, just literally never seen it in action in real life

Ha nice to meet you too! I did mean in real life though, probably should have been clearer.

horseymum · 05/04/2023 16:09

Water! ( Dentist in family) Orange diluted half juice half water at breakfast. Fizzy juice for parties/ out for a meal/ nice fruit juice if visitors round etc. Milk at tea/ supper.

Bienemajas · 05/04/2023 16:11

Well all of us on here who don't buy juices or squash are 'real' Smile

WonderingWanda · 05/04/2023 16:16

They just drink water. We have some Robinsons High juice in the cupboard for if they have a friend over (once a month) and they might have a soft drink for a special occasionlike a birhday meal or xmas.

My dd's baby teeth haven't fallen out yet and the dentist has told me off because they are suffering from acid erosion due to too much juice and fizzy drinks. Won't believe me when I tell him we don't drink it.

mnisannoyingAF · 05/04/2023 16:47

Lol at this thread

DanceMonster · 05/04/2023 16:50

I drank loads of squash and orange juice as a child. I’m 38 and still haven’t had a single filling. I’m fairly sure the pineapple juice my children have once every couple of weeks isn’t going to destroy their teeth either. It hasn’t so far.

Konfetka · 05/04/2023 16:56

This thread has reminded me of a public health message I saw in California: Give children water or milk, not juice.
