What juice do you give to your kids?

How often? Trying to find something that won't rot their teeth. I had a lot of orange juice as a child and it really affected my teeth. Also used to give eldest a lot of own brand but realised with the artificial sugars she kept falling poorly. Same with me. I get a sore throat instantly. I get the apple and mango one from Asda but just wondering what to give to my kids.

No added sugar squash.

gawditswindy · 05/04/2023 12:43

Lol at this thread. Who the hell is drinking the 2 litre bottles of fizz that fly out of the supermarkets? The juice industry would be destroyed if Mumsnet was representative of the population. Grin

6yo has a smoothie or an apple juice with dinner at weekends or if we're out. 4yo only drinks water or milk (even when I've offered her a juice because she doesn't drink nearly enough!)

Sunshineandshowers42 · 05/04/2023 12:47

Another vote for just water (and a glass of milk at bed) at home. They will have a fruit shoot or whatever is on offer at parties.

As a child, we were allowed squash, orange juice and later diet coke... As a result, I barely drank any plain water for pretty much my whole childhood. I didn't get the taste back for it until well into adulthood.

Most children I know go off water when squash is introduced so we will be sticking to water at home.

We have about 10. Litres of juice a week
All fresh no preservatives

easterbunnysbum · 05/04/2023 13:21

As a rule I give water and then if I do give juice or fruit shoot or even a fizzy drink it's always a treat and she never begins to rely on it nor expect it frequently.

I would keep with water as the baseline choice as long as humanly possible. I love water myself. My 7 year old still has water as a drink for most drinks.

easterbunnysbum · 05/04/2023 13:22

So because I do that as a rule it doesn't matter what juice I use as it's a treat and doesn't have to be healthful.

FlounderingFruitcake · 05/04/2023 13:26

Apple when they’re out for a meal as it’s something to have whilst they wait for food. At home it’s milk and water only.

Emmacb82 · 05/04/2023 13:26

Water for every day and milk in the evenings. Juice or squash for holidays or special occasions. Kids love water 🤷🏼‍♀️ They take their own water bottles to meals out and days out etc. I wish we were as good at limiting sweet foods as we are with drinks!

Jadviga · 05/04/2023 13:32

My eldest likes very cold water (with ice cubes). My youngest lives on juice. I give it to him heavily diluted (more like flavoured water than juice). Pick your battles...
We have a dentist appointment in a few weeks so we'll see if their teeth are all rotten I guess.

TimeForMeToF1y · 05/04/2023 13:44

Why are you assuming that they need to have juice at all?

It's not necessary to do that, why can't they drink water or milk?

crazeecatlady · 05/04/2023 13:50

@YogaLite You do know that Ascorbic acid is the name for Vit C and is unlikely to be what made your throat burn

Having had to chase toddler Ds around a hospital ward with syringes of fluids just to get him to drink something I seen relaxed my “no juice” rule and was made up when he drank enough oasis to not need to spend another night in hospital.

contray to popular belief juice isn’t the work of the devil!

Todaynotalways · 05/04/2023 15:28

DD has juice 2-3 times a week, always apple juice, usually watered down.

She has it with breakfast (so just ahead of having her teeth brushed), or when we're out at a restaurant/café.

Capitulatingpanda · 05/04/2023 15:30

I don't. Orange juice wrecked my teeth as child. I don't drink it now but damage is done. I don't give it to my kids at all.

That's not what I said, the premise of the OP is that a child must drink juice which is clearly not the case

Not in anyway the same as saying that no child should drink juice

The OP has given indication that the child can't drink other things, why look for problems?

Lcb123 · 05/04/2023 15:33

No one needs those juices, especially those 'from concentrate'. Give weak squash, or fruit teas cooled down.

DanceMonster · 05/04/2023 15:38

Mine genuinely don’t really like many juice type drinks. DD’s both like pineapple juice, which they always ask for if we’re out for a meal. DD1 likes orange and passion fruit J20 but it’s expensive so only a rare treat. Otherwise they drink water by preference. DS (4) is autistic and has never drank anything except milk and water; I’d rejoice if he drank some sort of juice as it would add some variety to his very, very limited diet.

Bienemajas · 05/04/2023 15:42

I have never bought a 'juice'.

Water is perfectly healthy

Bienemajas · 05/04/2023 15:43

Have a look at the ingredients of the 'juices' you buy!

Much better to eat the apples or oranges directly

RudsyFarmer · 05/04/2023 15:44

No juice. No fizzy drinks.

My children drink milk and water every day. In the summer like cordial and Ribena.

Do you only drink water? Mine drink water at home, but just as I like to have a ‘treat’ drink when we’re out for a meal for example, so do they.

mathanxiety · 05/04/2023 15:45

I never gave mine juice. It has as much sugar as Coke, basically.

They drank water.

mathanxiety · 05/04/2023 15:47

Unusual circumstances aside, children do not need juice.

Excited101 · 05/04/2023 15:48

Occasional juice of any type is fine, but I don’t buy it for home really, and both kids are happy to drink water.
