How much cash would you keep in the house?

I was rather surprised that a friend told me today that they keep £1000 in cash in the house 'in case of emergencies'. I don't have any more than about £50 at a time but often have none.

I don’t have any.

Hbh17 · 02/04/2023 16:37

Don't usually have any - why would I need cash?

bizzywiththefizzy · 02/04/2023 16:38

We do keep some cash in a safe .

CambsAlways · 02/04/2023 16:38

Nope, Don’t keep a lot of cash in house, live in a town so cash point very close

Indoorcatmum · 02/04/2023 16:40

I think having a months living expenses is sensible. Enough time to sort things out if a bank goes under etc

Ilikewinter · 02/04/2023 16:40

I have £0 ..... if I dug out my purse, that I havent used since lockdown, I might find a few quid...or it might have £20 in it ...... goes off to find purse 😂😂

Roselilly36 · 02/04/2023 16:41

Usually no more than a grand or two in the safe.

Caspianberg · 02/04/2023 16:45

we have just had a leaflet (not uk), regardless prepping for blackouts or other emergencies.
It’s recommends Min €100 per person in household as in blackout situation the supermarkets will remain closed but hand out bags of pre filled food outside supermarkets at cost. ( you also get fresh produce and bread on day 2-3 free). Places like pharmacies will also run on an emergency only but cash basis

We have an envelope with £100 cash in it which is labelled as for emergencies only. It started with DC were teens so they knew if they were stuck anywhere they could get a taxi home and there would be money to pay for it.

Coffeaddict · 02/04/2023 16:45

£1 for the trolley at aldi

ItWasntMyFault · 02/04/2023 16:46

Just a bit of loose change.

rowanisla · 02/04/2023 16:48

Usually keep £1-200 in cash- enough to get petrol for work / some food if there is an issue with our bank basically. Started doing this when Ukraine was invaded as worried about cyber attacks taking out banks for a day or two. Also got a second back account / card with a different bank at the same time.

readbooksdrinktea · 02/04/2023 16:50

A week's grocery money. Banks have been having tech issues where I am recently, rendering cards unusable. Usually fixed in 1 or 2 days.

cherrypied · 02/04/2023 16:52

About £100- 200

We put in 20 a month and spend it at Xmas on booze and meat -We are always borrowing from it for take a ways car wash and kids birthday cards! And what ever else crops up. Very hand to have in.

Theraffarian · 02/04/2023 16:52

Probably an emergency tenner , have a spare unused bank account with £100 sitting in it in case my own bank system crashes , but it would take everything to shut down so I couldn’t use credit cards either before I had to worry .

itwasntmetho · 02/04/2023 16:53

A couple of months food money which could stretch to a few months if I couldn’t access money in my account.

BeyondMyWits · 02/04/2023 16:54

£500 or so in £5/10/20s. Bug out money. I needed it last relationship.
(Do you know how easy it is for a partner to report your credit/debit card stolen... I do.)

Haven't so far this one... 24 years on...

PurpleBananaSmoothie · 02/04/2023 16:55

There’s 2 x £1 coins on top of the washing machine, there’s some change in the junk drawer, there’s a small amount of change in my purse and then a vase of change on the bookcase. We might be able to cobble together about £6 but it would take quite a while.

If I had £1000 in cash, I would put it somewhere “safe” and then forget where “safe” was.

ArcticSkewer · 02/04/2023 16:55

Same, a couple of thousand

Moveforward · 02/04/2023 16:56

Hardly anything!

I've about £30 in dollars from past holiday and about £20 in GBP. Don't use cash anymore and the cashpoints closed now in town, so I can't see that changing back anytime soon.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/04/2023 16:57

Dh always has £100 and there is a couple of hundred for emergencies.

DanceMonster · 02/04/2023 17:00

I reckon I’ve got about 30p
