What do you call your grandmother?

I'm using the 'correct' term there, which I don't use, but the reason for asking this is I have heard of her being called "mamar" (not sure of spelling) and I've never heard it. Is it a regional thing?

I think nanny is a more northern thing. It sounds like the job to my ears. My children call my mum Grandma but recently due to text speak it's devolved to Gma (gee ma).

WingedFae · 31/03/2023 17:26

I no longer have either of my lovely GMs but it was always Granny ❤️

GrouchyKiwi · 31/03/2023 17:29

Oma (Dutch)
Gamma or Grandma, depending on how schmoozy I was feeling. Gamma later became her name for her great-grandchildren to call her.

IHeartGeneHunt · 31/03/2023 17:31

They've been gone 36 and 24 years but they were Nainie and Grandma.

Comedycook · 31/03/2023 17:32

Grandma.

My mother told me using the term Nan or Nanny was common.

A nanny is someone you employ to look after your children.

Houseyvibe · 31/03/2023 17:32

Grandma

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 31/03/2023 17:33

Dead, mercifully.

I'll leave it to your imagination regards what the spiteful old hag was called while she was still alive.

Amotherlife · 31/03/2023 17:34

Grandma. She's been dead 25 years now.

hexsnidgett · 31/03/2023 17:34

Nan, when she was alive.

East Anglia are we counting that as 'Northern' now? I'm never sure.

WestendVBroadway · 31/03/2023 17:38

I am mid 50s, both my late Grandmother's were known as Granny, or Gran. My DD called my DM and DMil Grandma. I always hated the term Nan, but in later years if I was talking to someone about my Gran I would say my Nan, as other people used to think Gran was weird. For added info my parents and grandparents were from the Caribbean, so it may all be cultural.

flutterbyebaby · 31/03/2023 17:38

Nain for my Welsh one and Mimi for my Irish one

flutterbyebaby · 31/03/2023 17:39

Both passed away, they'd be a hundred and odd now.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 31/03/2023 17:39

I'm GrandMumsie and himself is Grandpopsie we are a very blended family so quite a few grandparents for little Zach in our family so we let what ever happened happen when it came to names

YorkieTheRabbit · 31/03/2023 17:48

I only ever knew one of mine, I called her Gran, she was a wonderful woman, died in 1996.

golddustwomen · 31/03/2023 17:51

Nanny when a child, nan now.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 31/03/2023 17:52

Sadly both are long gone, but they were Grandma (first name).

Danikm151 · 31/03/2023 17:52

Nanny and I’m 31 it seems wrong to say Nan and she insisted that Grandma made her feel old

Blossomtoes · 31/03/2023 17:53

Mine was Granny. My mum was Granny. I’m Granny too.

Schmutter · 31/03/2023 17:56

My mum is dead but she had a loathing of ‘nan or nanny’ as she thought that belonged only on a goat. So she was grandma. Mil is also grandma.

I called both of mine granny.
