Does the UK weather make you feel like shit...

This is a bit of a rant, but just wanted to sound out here and see if anyone else feels the same.
I'm just honestly fed up with the weather in the UK at the moment. In the North we haven't had one consecutive week where it's not rained and been grey. We have a bit of sun at the moment, but it's decieving as it's freezing once you step outside.
Me and DH only have one day a fortnight off together and it always seems to rain, so plans for nice long walks and brunches get replaced by staying in with Netflix. A lot of MNers would tell me to donn my waterproofs and embrace the weather, but I can't imagine anything worse than trudging through the pissing rain, wrapped up to the eyeballs in waterproofs
I have some nice summer clothes bought for holidays, find myself wearing the same five outfits in rotation which involves jumpers waterproof boots and tights. I feel frumpy and dowdy and I'm only 34.
Someone once mentioned the drinking culture in the UK, which I think has largely to do with the weather here as well. We're not like the Mediterranean's who can sit having 2 hour antipasti lunches outside with a glass of wine. It's a good life style, but I think the weather on top of everything that's gone on these past few years like Covid, cost of living increases, etc is making a lot of people miserable.
I don't think I have SAD, as I don't think sitting in front of the bright light would make me feel better. I want to feel the sun on my skin, be able to go for a walk where you're not packing for 15 weather changes and be able to eat outside just for once.

Dare I ask what a canon gender reveal is...?

BarrelOfOtters · 14/03/2024 10:07

Yep, we live in the North West, it's been a long wet winter. We've managed to get away for a couple of weeks somewhere warm - usually California for DH's work - for the last few years ... it's made a huge difference.

We ponder moving to San Diego ... pleasant all year round.

Aussieland · 14/03/2024 10:09

Yes. I moved to Australia. Life changing in many ways but the weather is a huge one

When I feel like complaining lately about too much rain, I try to think of e.g. southern Spain and Portugal, where I’ve heard recently that both are already in the grip of drought - and it’s not even summer yet.

Not to mention friends in Australia, who recently had to leave their house for 48 hours because of a bush fire raging only 200m away.

I lived for 13 years in Middle Eastern deserts, where the students I taught would refer to their very occasional rain as ‘God’s bounty’ so I dare say that’s coloured my feelings, too.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/03/2024 11:46

I agree, permadrizzle is preferable to regular, severe droughts and wildfires and its affect on agriculture and wildlife. I think it can grind you down when the sun doesn't seem to make it into Spring but it could be worse

Ariela · 14/03/2024 11:51

Try being a horse owner! Fields too wet, and totally trashed so no turnout, water rising through the floor so the rubber stable mats float. It's been far far too wet.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 14/03/2024 11:53

YANBU. Compounded by the fact that we had a wet, dreary summer too. Even on a dry day, walks are still wet and boggy in the forest. Nothing has had a chance to dry out yet.

This thread has me thinking about the endless conversations I've had with fellow horse owners. The 23/24 winter has been the worst anyone can remember. And it started in July. 8 bloody months of it. The water table is higher than I can ever remember. We have ponds in our paddock that have never ever appeared before. It's absolutely shite. Praying for a long period of dry weather soon. Not hot, just dry. 🙏

Utterly depressing, I feel exactly the same!

I could not agree more! It's always cold I mean it's now June 12th 2024 and it's 8 degrees tonight highs on 13 in the day. It is awful the weather in this country. I feel the same way as you. I have a bad health conditions and if exposed to cold it makes me worse so this is probably the wrong place to live. I'd love to live in Spain but my poor health doesn't allow me to work. The sun makes everything look and feel nicer but this is the UK and it's always raining. Last year for example it rained all summer and now it's raining constantly again and cold in June.
We probably will only see a week or so of heat then back to winter. It can be very depressing those nice summer clothes end up rotting in the cupboard.

Lelechic · 13/06/2024 00:36

It never stops raining.

Michiru · 13/06/2024 06:37

My weather app said it was 4 degrees this morning. I put the heating on.

ThePoshUns · 13/06/2024 07:33

I'm shivering in bed contemplating putting the heating on. It's ridiculous.

lul37 · 13/06/2024 08:32

It was my birthday few days ago and i remember how warm and sunny the weather was when we lived abroad and how we celebrated it outdoors with my family, now that we moved back to UK I feel so cheated that this is technically considered summer season in UK but it’s still cold. Where is summer??😂

TheaBrandt · 13/06/2024 08:37

Electric blanket on / winter slippers / tights and jumpers. In mid June.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 13/06/2024 09:25

Sorry for those of you who are still shivering. It's forecast a high of 15 with me today but the sun is out at the moment and I'm in the garden with my coffee looking at my flowers (south). It's glorious. I've got my sleeves pushed up, no coat!

I feel suicidal over it , it is really rubbish, I live for the spring and summer.

Phil9 · 07/07/2024 22:03

I feel suicidal over it, I live for the spring and summer, this is now dire

Aussieland · 08/07/2024 04:26

I have been back in the UK for a week for holidays and honestly? It has reminded me how frustrating the weather is and how it seeps into everything. I left a country which was the same temperature with less rain in the middle of winter and where for 9 months of the year you can plan outdoor things.

No none of you are going mad- it really is shit.

I have been contemplating what I will do if we have to move back to the UK which is a small possibility. I don’t know whether there is a way to embrace it, buy a lot of wet weather gear and grit teeth, consciously seek out other focuses to distract from the weather and make home a blissful place or whether it’s just about moving as far south as humanly possibly and hoping for the best.

@Phil9 I am sorry you feel like this. I understand and am searching for what the answer might be for you. Is it “just” weather or is there something else that you CAN change that is affecting you?

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 08/07/2024 05:56

@Phil9 I really sympathise, your post resonates with me because I used to feel like that too. It was a non-existent summer (Ireland 2011 IIRC) that made me move to Australia. My husband had wanted to move for years but I had the casting vote. It was a pretty drastic solution but I am so glad I did it. It's winter here now, so cool (mid to high teens), and wet, and I still hate it, but winter here is short and here on the West Coast the weather is lovely for nine months a year (if you like sun and heat). I know it isn't easy but could you move somewhere warmer? Reading these threads just reminds of how crap it was never being able to depend on just a bit of sunshine, so if you can't move I'd be planning a cheap holiday somewhere sunny as soon as possible. Good luck, hope you get some sunshine soon.

Meadowfinch · 08/07/2024 06:13

I'm happy as soon as the temperature climbs above 15 degrees. Yesterday was showery, humid, about 19.

I went for a run - got soaked but was warm so no problem. Into town with ds which was sunny. Then gardening which was ok because I timed the showers to coincide with coffee or working in the greenhouse.

Summer clothes all day. I love the greenness of the U.K. but it's sometimes hard to look good when it's breezy or wet. I'm definitely the sort who puts on waterproofs and carries on. My ex visited my son yesterday and he used a brolly for the 7 steps from the car to my front door 😂

SallyWD · 08/07/2024 09:57

Beautiful day in Yorkshire today. Warm and sunny.

Newmum738 · 08/07/2024 10:06

Yes, I'm fed up of the cold & would like to see some sun. It is seriously affecting my mood.

liveforsummer · 08/07/2024 11:13

We are now on week 2 of the summer holidays and there has not been a day it hasn't rained. So sick of getting wet and having to wear and wash multiple layers of clothing. I still can't put away my winter coat! Thoroughly, thoroughly fed up now!

GoldOrca · 08/07/2024 11:16

No. I love UK weather. We rarely have extreme highs or lows that mean the weather is a health hazard. It's mild all year round to the point that our grass doesn't even die off in winter. It rarely snows, we rarely have droughts. The countryside is green and lush and we can grow plants here that you can't even grow in other EU countries because our winters are so mild. There is beauty and life around in every season. Even if it rains, it only drizzles. You're not likely to be caught in a flash flood. There are no monsoons. We don't have tornadoes. We are so far north that we can see the northern lights, but it rarely snows thanks to the gulf stream. Have you seen the sunset in winter? Its breathtaking. I love everything about it.
