Does the UK weather make you feel like shit...

This is a bit of a rant, but just wanted to sound out here and see if anyone else feels the same.
I'm just honestly fed up with the weather in the UK at the moment. In the North we haven't had one consecutive week where it's not rained and been grey. We have a bit of sun at the moment, but it's decieving as it's freezing once you step outside.
Me and DH only have one day a fortnight off together and it always seems to rain, so plans for nice long walks and brunches get replaced by staying in with Netflix. A lot of MNers would tell me to donn my waterproofs and embrace the weather, but I can't imagine anything worse than trudging through the pissing rain, wrapped up to the eyeballs in waterproofs
I have some nice summer clothes bought for holidays, find myself wearing the same five outfits in rotation which involves jumpers waterproof boots and tights. I feel frumpy and dowdy and I'm only 34.
Someone once mentioned the drinking culture in the UK, which I think has largely to do with the weather here as well. We're not like the Mediterranean's who can sit having 2 hour antipasti lunches outside with a glass of wine. It's a good life style, but I think the weather on top of everything that's gone on these past few years like Covid, cost of living increases, etc is making a lot of people miserable.
I don't think I have SAD, as I don't think sitting in front of the bright light would make me feel better. I want to feel the sun on my skin, be able to go for a walk where you're not packing for 15 weather changes and be able to eat outside just for once.

I am confused where is this heat? Its been mediocre sunshine, highest 23c in the sun and in-between putting a cardigan on when it clouds over. I'm in the south 🤣I am waiting for that real heat 28c+ thank you. Its rained for 7 months since last October consistently. No water hortage and only this country moans. How does my native country with much less rainfall cope? They do very well actually.😆

Which country is that?

I think you've missed the point a bit. The posters you were quoting were talking about being concerned about abnormal weather patterns and climate change. Good to hear other countries aren't bothered about it though!

SecretVictoria · 09/06/2023 05:17

It’s been a lot nicer but I’m on early turn this week and it’s been absolutely freezing in the mornings with the heat only appearing at lunchtime. It’s also been really overcast. We’re still in coats at work until after break. It takes so long to warm up. I long to open my front door no get that wave of heat and sun.

Can't believe how horrible the weather July has been in July Confused

anon666 · 30/07/2023 15:56

Agree. Made the mistake of booking a UK staycation because of that heatwave in June. It terrified me that Europe would be too hot.

I mean I wasn't wrong about Europe but this is another extreme. May as well BE winter.

Hardly a ray of sun on the south coast, now drizzling and windy.

lul37 · 30/07/2023 17:05

I used to love coming to the rain when we lived abroad in the hot sun, it felt so refreshing!! I wonder, if like another poster mentioned above, if it's to do with growing up in the UK. It doesn't seem to bother my kids as they were born here, but it bothers me greatly as i grew up abroad where we had proper summers. So I'm wondering if it's to do with that -knowing what you're really missing out on!!

CoveredWindows · 30/07/2023 17:13

It’s grim. The constant fucking mad wind doesn’t help either.

I am utterly fed up

But when we di.have a few weeks of hot weather we do nothing but complain🤷

Whu · 30/07/2023 17:51

It’s horrendous! 14 degrees, windy and pissing it down in July. It’s been grim for weeks.

Lottapianos · 30/07/2023 17:54

'But when we di.havea few weeks of hot weather we do nothing but complain🤷'

Guilty as charged! 😁 I guess most people want a happy medium. I'm in London, and we've had some lovely weather - yesterday was 23 degs and sunny, similar this morning, but it's been lashing down all afternoon. It's all just so unsettled. When I get fed up with it, I remind myself that ANYTHING is better than 40+ degrees! Even at 30+, I'm miserable if it lasts for more than a couple of days

lul37 · 30/07/2023 17:58

@x2boys yes lol as unfortunately there is also no air con here, and it gets quite muggy and humid in the UK when it goes over just 25 degrees Grin.

ALongHardWinter · 30/07/2023 18:00

Yes. When it's bloody boiling hot it pisses me off.

BeaumontLivingston · 30/07/2023 18:02

No because I'm so used to it. I'm 42 and it's always been this way. I enjoy rain and I like winter, snow, boots, coats, wrapping up warm and sipping hot drinks. I also love it as it makes me feel so appreciative of the fact that I have a home and can look out on the rain in my cosy lounge.

I also love the sun but I just don’t get upset by weather, perhaps as it's so inevitable there wouldn't be a point in being upset by it. I have lots of things to be upset about so I just focus on those.

I basically make the best of the winter and enjoy what I can about it. It is about attitude perhaps. I know we get a long period of the colder weather, but why not try to enjoy it?

TerfTalking · 30/07/2023 18:07

Not me, I’m so English and Northern. I love our climate and it was bloody glorious here in May, I remember because my Ozzie mate was here and it was hot and the sun shone every day, everywhere was a mass of luscious green and it never looked more beautiful.

almost Every year is shit in July and august, embrace it, September is usually lovely. If we had baking heat every summer we wouldn’t have the green and pleasant land we do.

WinniFinniHadog · 30/07/2023 18:09

I'm in Wales, rain, rain and more rain. Followed by rain.

I'm used to it, I'm not a fan of hit weather, I prefer crisp dry and cold, but that doesn't happen often, so I'll settle for rainy and cold 🤣

TerfTalking · 30/07/2023 18:10

SallyWD · 05/06/2023 12:27

Just seen you're in Bradford. I'm in Leeds! Can the weather really be that different? Had no rain for weeks! Currently sitting in the garden in the sun.

I’m in Halifax, I swear the sun shines on Leeds and Bradford is always grey.

drive down the M621 and you see a beam of sun over Leeds, drive to Bradford and as soon as you hit Wibsey it’s grey.

every single time 😂

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/07/2023 18:10

I'm finding the torrential rain a bit much today, tbh. I wish we could have just a little more warmth and sun in July and August generally.

But having just returned from holiday in the Canaries, where a palm tree is a rare sight, and the only things that grow in the wild are cacti, and all the drinking water is desalinated - no, I think I'd rather live in our green and pleasant land.

LuciferRising · 30/07/2023 18:11

It's dim outside and pouring down. I have the windows open so I can hear it. Put a candle and some fairy lights on. Feels like autumn. It adequately reflects the gut wrenching foulness coarsing through my veins at the realisation I return to work tomorrow after several weeks off. Perfect weather to ponder what the the actual heck I'm doing with my life and why I have not won the lottery.

Childhoodnostalgia · 30/07/2023 18:19

Somebody will come along and disagree I’m sure but I’m middle aged and this is how I remember summers! We certainly didn’t have high temps in April as we do now, May Day was always freezing and wet and I remember many a July of it doing nothing but rain and being chilly.

I much prefer this summer to last but I’m sure it will come back with vengeance if not next year, very soon and become the norm.

midsomermurderess · 30/07/2023 18:22

I'm quite enjoying the current weather. I like the sudden scurries of rain, scudding clouds, episodes of blue skies and sunshine, not too warm. Although it feels oddly autumnal for the end of July.

Cascais · 30/07/2023 18:23

No

GEC44 · 31/07/2023 09:25

I quite like it, especially no horribly hot and uncomfortable nights. This time last year we had just had 40c and everywhere was parched. What a contrast we have this year. It's the jet stream stuck to the south of the UK which is keeping us cool and Southern Europe hot.Mid August into early September is looking much drier and warmer.

Bluevelvetsofa · 31/07/2023 09:37

The relentless wind gets me down. The garden has been decimated by it, everything has to be staked and tethered and it’s properly autumn now, with leaves falling. Hate it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/07/2023 10:56

My garden has been decimated by slugs due to constant rain.

I just can’t keep up with them. I can’t get out for long enough to deal with them. They’ve even crawled up a fence and eaten all my climatis. I’ve never had this before.😫

gemzhart · 09/08/2023 21:55

Here we are months later and it hasn't got any better. Infact it's got worse and I'm seriously depressed I'm trying to organise my gender reveal and I am now going to have to have the scan and wait until a day that decides not to rain to host the reveal party. That looks like it could be weeks if not more before the bad weather stops. We have had zero summer this year and I'm almost suicidal! I think I do have seasonal disorder so because the weather has not improved all year. I'm done dropping tools and leaving this miserable country (I wish I could) that with the price of living and everything else it's one dire place to live!
