Does the UK weather make you feel like shit...

This is a bit of a rant, but just wanted to sound out here and see if anyone else feels the same.
I'm just honestly fed up with the weather in the UK at the moment. In the North we haven't had one consecutive week where it's not rained and been grey. We have a bit of sun at the moment, but it's decieving as it's freezing once you step outside.
Me and DH only have one day a fortnight off together and it always seems to rain, so plans for nice long walks and brunches get replaced by staying in with Netflix. A lot of MNers would tell me to donn my waterproofs and embrace the weather, but I can't imagine anything worse than trudging through the pissing rain, wrapped up to the eyeballs in waterproofs
I have some nice summer clothes bought for holidays, find myself wearing the same five outfits in rotation which involves jumpers waterproof boots and tights. I feel frumpy and dowdy and I'm only 34.
Someone once mentioned the drinking culture in the UK, which I think has largely to do with the weather here as well. We're not like the Mediterranean's who can sit having 2 hour antipasti lunches outside with a glass of wine. It's a good life style, but I think the weather on top of everything that's gone on these past few years like Covid, cost of living increases, etc is making a lot of people miserable.
I don't think I have SAD, as I don't think sitting in front of the bright light would make me feel better. I want to feel the sun on my skin, be able to go for a walk where you're not packing for 15 weather changes and be able to eat outside just for once.

I'm with you OP. I live in the North East and it's just been shit 😔

The worst part is that I actually chose to move to this country, but I'm now wondering what possessed me.

I'm currently planning my escape, but it will take a few years, sadly

This is what stops me from leaving the sw.
It has its down points, rain is a trade off for hotter built up and expensive.
Some of the best daylight in the uk, but expensive and underpaid

anon666 · 27/03/2023 18:54

I think it's been the most miserable grey winter I can remember. Cold, boring, grey, featureless.

No sun. Sunless cold days.

I used to get SAD and it's been an endurance.

anon666 · 27/03/2023 18:55

PS am in London and we normally have much more sun than we've had this year. Even cold sun is better than the grey.

Yes, it does make me feel a bit rubbish every now and then. I'm in the south and I'm really sick of the cold, wind and rain this year. We're nearly at the end of March and have had barely any spring weather and all the tree blossom and daffs are out against a grey background when we usually have some blue at least.

However, I am VERY aware of how lucky we are with the weather in the UK generally and I do my best not to moan about it.

Pinkbonbon · 27/03/2023 19:09

Yeah it's the never being able to wear nice clothes thar annoys me the most. I'm 34 too and feel like I'm wasting whats left of my youth dressing in baggy stuff most of every year.

Cakemonger · 27/03/2023 19:11

I've moved back up north after living in the Midlands and the south and I'm really struggling. Granted it's not exactly tropical down there but I did at least feel like I'd had some sort of summer and enjoyed buying and wearing my summer wardrobe, sitting outside cafes etc. Currently trying to weigh up whether it's worth trying to move back down for the weather given how much more expensive everything is. The only upside has been that during the heatwaves last year it wasn't too hot here - in fact it was perfect.

Tumbleweed101 · 27/03/2023 19:13

My birthday is end of March and it's only been last few years we might have warm spring weather. This year is far more typical. I'd like a sunny summer but mid to Hugh 20's is plenty for me while working in UK. Hot weather is for abroad holidays!

Out of interest, where do people on this thread think there is an ideal climate with no problems?

SecretVictoria · 27/03/2023 19:24

It’s crap. The frost warning was on on my car this morning. I didn’t think I’d still be in thermals at work at this time of year either. I really hate it and would give lots to be able to move back down south where at least there is something resembling summer.

Monstermunchmum · 27/03/2023 19:24

We just seem to have winter and a short summer, our seasons are all merging into the two now I think. This is what makes winter seem so long. We don’t have spring now , we just have winter for longer.

For me, somewhere like Las Vegas. I don’t particularly like the place but the heat and low humidity suits me fine!

C1N1C · 27/03/2023 19:25

No. For me it's perfect. I love that cool, dull feeling.

Littlecamellia · 27/03/2023 19:28

Yes, this winter has gone on, and on, and on. I'm totally fed up with it now. Even when it's sunny, you go outside and a bitter wind hits you in the face.
I want to sit outside with my feet up, wearing shorts ( even though I look crap in them), and drink a cup of tea. Roll on summer and may it be a hot one.

TiredandLate · 27/03/2023 19:58

Yes! I'm desperate for some sunshine. I think I have SAD and this winter has been longg.

I am counting the days until July and I'm away for 10 days and can soak up the sun on a terrace looking over the sea and the city, eating tapas and drinking sangria with warm bones. I'd be a much nicer person if I lived in the Mediterranean 😂

TorviShieldMaiden · 27/03/2023 20:07

I’m in Yorkshire and haven’t worn a jumper for a while. I wouldn’t say it’s thermals weather! In the sunshine today it was lovely. I’m wearing jeans and long sleeved T-shirt most days.

I don’t think it’s been that bad. I’m outside all the time walking, cycling, running and mostly this winter I’ve continued. I’ve got pictures from lots of places showing clear skies!

im not bothered by clothes. I’d much rather be wearing walking trousers, boots and a fleece, than worry about if my sandals match my dress or how much skin to show in summer

Untrusting · 27/03/2023 20:23

Agree that it's the 'greyness' that gets me down.

I can handle the cold and like the changing seasons but it's so dreary always being cloudy and grey.

Think I'm noticing it more as well as I'm getting older. Can't believe how much the sun improves my mood. I went on a hike last week in the sun and it gave me a boost all day whereas I went on a longer one yesterday and it remained gloomy the whole time. Felt better for the exercise but definitely didn't have the mood boost that I'd had the week before.

DelphiniumBlue · 27/03/2023 20:57

No, I love our winters, springs and autumns.
Recently, summer has literally been making me feel sick, dizzy, lightheaded. I don't function well over 25 degrees, and at 30/35/40 I don't function at all - all my energy goes on trying to stay cool, can't sleep, go out, I have my life on hold at those temperatures.

Soproudoflionesses · 27/03/2023 21:45

I hear you op.
We went away in February thinking it will be just getting nice when we get home but no, still freezing cold and wet. Longest winter ever.

Commonsensitivity · 27/03/2023 21:57

Not just you. My body is in post traumatic shock from this winter. It's couldn't quite unfurl when it felt sunshine today. Thank fuck for daffodils and Easter though. It can only get better from here.

ThePoshUns · 27/03/2023 22:08

I'm the same. So fed up of the bloody rain.

😮I’m in Yorkshire too. It was bloody freezing today. I’ve worn thermals all winter apart from 2 days last week. It’s been horrible and cold all winter.

CeriB82 · 27/03/2023 22:32

Doesn’t bother me at all. Im out in all weathers. You cant just stay in just because its raining a walk in the rain is refreshing.

rewilded · 27/03/2023 22:41

It has been a lovely sunny day here. It was warm in my sheltered garden and a pleasant walk whilst wrapped up.

I was able to read my book with a coffee the first since late September!

Perfectlystill · 27/03/2023 23:06

Since we got a dog and have therefore had to be out every single day, the weather has not upset me at all, weirdly.

I do think it's a question of just get out there and you'll be ok.
