Does the UK weather make you feel like shit...

This is a bit of a rant, but just wanted to sound out here and see if anyone else feels the same.
I'm just honestly fed up with the weather in the UK at the moment. In the North we haven't had one consecutive week where it's not rained and been grey. We have a bit of sun at the moment, but it's decieving as it's freezing once you step outside.
Me and DH only have one day a fortnight off together and it always seems to rain, so plans for nice long walks and brunches get replaced by staying in with Netflix. A lot of MNers would tell me to donn my waterproofs and embrace the weather, but I can't imagine anything worse than trudging through the pissing rain, wrapped up to the eyeballs in waterproofs
I have some nice summer clothes bought for holidays, find myself wearing the same five outfits in rotation which involves jumpers waterproof boots and tights. I feel frumpy and dowdy and I'm only 34.
Someone once mentioned the drinking culture in the UK, which I think has largely to do with the weather here as well. We're not like the Mediterranean's who can sit having 2 hour antipasti lunches outside with a glass of wine. It's a good life style, but I think the weather on top of everything that's gone on these past few years like Covid, cost of living increases, etc is making a lot of people miserable.
I don't think I have SAD, as I don't think sitting in front of the bright light would make me feel better. I want to feel the sun on my skin, be able to go for a walk where you're not packing for 15 weather changes and be able to eat outside just for once.

Honestly it's one of the main reasons I left the UK for good. The grey skies are depressing and make everyone a little more angry and negative.

I can't cope even for short visits back!

Just out of interest - where do you live now? And what is the climate like?

ThePoshUns · 28/03/2023 06:55

We had sun here yesterday and I felt so energised especially with the longer evening. Today, rain again .
My plan when I retire is to take a few months rent on an apartment in Spain over the winter.

And I am sick of wearing tights and boots.

motherofkevinnotperry · 28/03/2023 07:32

It has been cold for a long time and March has been wet. We usually get a good few days at some point during Easter/April and May is the turning point. We're only weeks away.

I totally agree that the cost of living has really made it a hard, long, cold, dark winter in the UK. Especially in the North, it's been tough going!

hattie43 · 28/03/2023 07:32

Yes I've totally had enough of the weather and can totally see why the retired have moved to sunnier climes

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/03/2023 09:28

Cold grey and raining again. 6 degrees. Rain all day.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 28/03/2023 13:46

Yes but then I went somewhere sunny for the weekend last week and burnt at 17C so I'm not that mad anymore

maddog1996 · 28/03/2023 23:46

The greyness is sooooo depressing ... I hate it so much

RoseMartha · 28/03/2023 23:49

mackthepony · 29/03/2023 01:28

Hmm, visited the UK last week of Feb/ first week March and the weather was actually great. No rain, bit grey but nice and dry. Green grass and flowers peeping through. East lancs.

Was good too because it's dark around 6.30pm and not light till later in the morning, so the kids slept longer

MistySkiesAreGone · 29/03/2023 05:13

Everyone in the UK is potentially vit D deficient. The NHS recommend all adults take it from Oct-Mar as we do not get enough. It is called the sunshine vitamin. I rarely notice how dark it feels when I take it.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 29/03/2023 05:39

Yes it did, and that is one of the reasons I emigrated to one of the world's sunniest cities. The light and sunshine absolutely have a very positive effect on my mood, I just couldn't go back to the grey skies again.

Funny enough I feel the opposite! I'm in the South East and we barely had any rain last year, reservoir levels were low, and talks of another scorching summer, global warming etc makes me anxious. It's only really this month we've had plenty of rain and it's felt like a huge relief!

I work with a lot of people in the US and Middle East who are permanently in a draught, and haven't had rain for months on end, it's a constant worry for them, so I feel pretty lucky!

I agree. I'm sure everyone is enjoying the endless heat and sunshine now, it hasn't rained for getting on a month. It worries me too. Apart from that I prefer variable weather, not endless blaring sunshine, no wind, no clouds. Last summer scared me, it didn't rain for weeks and weeks and everything was brown.

Endless heat and sunshine?? We're in the East and it's been so cold and miserable that we've had the heating back on!

SallyWD · 05/06/2023 12:25

I definitely feel better in the sunshine so completely get where you're coming from.
Where do you live OP? I'm also in the north (Yorkshire) and the weather has been dry for a few weeks now and now rain in the forecast. In fact, I've been hoping for rain as the garden is suffering. We've had some glorious weather since mid/late May.

SallyWD · 05/06/2023 12:27

Just seen you're in Bradford. I'm in Leeds! Can the weather really be that different? Had no rain for weeks! Currently sitting in the garden in the sun.

Luckydip1 · 05/06/2023 12:27

Lovely and sunny down south. 😎

Platoo · 05/06/2023 12:37

Lovely day yesterday and now cold, cloudy and wi dying again today in SE London - like the last couple of weeks 😫

Platoo · 05/06/2023 12:38

*cold, cloudy and windy

EllaPaella · 05/06/2023 12:40

I'm in the North East and i'm really cold today. Contemplating the heating tbh.

anon666 · 05/06/2023 19:40

It started off freezing today but now it's lovely since the sun came out.

I'm contemplating a move to warmer climes. It's make or break for my mood tbh.

I am confused where is this heat? Its been mediocre sunshine, highest 23c in the sun and in-between putting a cardigan on when it clouds over. I'm in the south 🤣I am waiting for that real heat 28c+ thank you. Its rained for 7 months since last October consistently. No water hortage and only this country moans. How does my native country with much less rainfall cope? They do very well actually.😆
