Who knew that they are putting aspartame into full fat Pepsi now?

All cans of full sugar Pepsi now have less than half the sugar content. The rest has been replaced with aspartame.

The cans look exactly the same, and you won’t know the difference unless you read the ingredients listing.

You could also tell the difference by looking at the traffic light system on the side of cans. Old cans will have 40% RDA sugar. The new cans now have 17% RDA sugar.

Unbelievable that they have made a change like this without doing anything to draw attention to it, or to let consumers know.

How many people with allergies or medical issues relating to aspartame will buy Pepsi without realising??

There’s more caffeine in Diet Coke than normal Coke. It’s not caffeine free.

You can get caffeine free Diet Coke (it comes in gold cans). They don't make a caffeine free version of normal Coke AFAIK.

I’m another one who has fizzy drinks very rarely - maybe half a dozen times a year, if that. I cannot stand artificial sweeteners as they taste disgusting. I accidentally bought a bottle of a diet version of coke when I was holiday last month. Knew as soon as I tasted it and had to bin it.

Squash has gone the same way, unfortunately, which limits choice to the more expensive options. At the moment I buy the bottle green cordials as a treat.

I have a condition meaning I can't go near phenylalanine (illness 1) or aspartame (illness 2) so thanks for sharing OP.

I'll be drinking straight up vodka in the pub at this rate 😂 there'll be nothing else.

I'm joking, I hate vodka ...

Just to point out again the OP is wrong.

pepsi have changed the recipe and have now added sweetener but that is Acesulfame NOT ASPARTAME

Regular Pepsi has no aspartame.

There's a fizzy drink called Rio I keep meaning to try. Sweetener free but not that widely available.

I see Rio quite a bit in small ‘bit of everything’ shops you often see on the high street. You know the type, with buckets and mops etc outside on the pavement.
They usually have a drink section with some wonderfully weird items. Ours even has pineapple Fanta.

Also worth a wander to Chinese/world food supermarkets as they very often have crates of imported soda.

From what I’ve read Pepsi changed in a lot of European countries last year so they are bringing us in line. Worth noting if you’re off on holiday, read the ingredients.

Rio is nice. Our local co op sells it with the ready made sandwiches.

The Old Jamaica ginger beer is also back again but hard to find and you need to look for the words original recipe and the black rim otherwise it’s rank. I’ve just bought a case to replace the Fentiman’s I used to drink.

Consumer choice has gone by the wayside over the sugar tax as greedy companies save money. Oddly the price of Pepsi has not dropped despite it no longer carrying the tax….

SecondhandMuck · 24/03/2023 10:51

Thanks for the Rio location intel. I'll have a look for it when I'm out and about tomorrow.

I bet coke execs are rubbing their hands together with glee at the moment. Can't see them being daft enough to commit the brand suicide their only rival has.

I have literally just binned a 6 pack of Pepsi after opening the first can yesterday.

Going out to replace it with Coke right now!

I also drink caffeine free Coke Zero in the evening and we call it Coke-free Coke and my Nanny State IPA is beer-free beer.

What a waste. I know you don't like it (and I'm with you there) but surely someone else would have had the other cans.

I've never made a comment like this before on MN but I really am a bit shocked. There are plenty of people who like those disgusting artificial sweeteners.

I wonder what the legality of returning them to store, given an unpublicised, fundamental change to the product?

If you never drink soft drinks, why are you even on this thread? 🤷‍♀️

I don't think I said anything about whether or not I drink them. I do drink soft drinks on occasion. But I find it strange that someone is concerned about chemicals in diet coke/ pepsi but not in regular coke. They are just as bad for you in different ways. Coca cola is basically acid, whether or not it contains sugar.

Hang around on the internet long enough, you’ll see all sorts of contradictions. I’m particularly fond of the people who are worried about the government/banks/FBI tracking their movements via their bank accounts so only ever pay cash… but still take their mobile phones everywhere they go.

EmmaEmerald · 24/03/2023 17:20

harkerlee some people have stomach issues, headaches etc with the artificial stuff. For some of us, it's just taste. I'm quite unfussy about most things but I want my sugar to taste like sugar! My mum loved Diet Coke, I can't fathom it but I'd never judge it.

EmmaEmerald · 24/03/2023 17:24

Port the people I know using cash for that reason are using non smart phones or no phones, or don't take their phones out.

I was referring specifically to the person who said that diet coke is 'fake crap that rots your insides' and claiming that the 'chemicals' are worse than sugar.

If diet coke is fake crap that rots your insides, then full sugar coke is no better.

jizzlord · 24/03/2023 17:26

Some people need sugar @harkerlee since lucozade was ruined Pepsi and coke have been used here for hypos as they are by far the fastest to work.

Boomboom22 · 24/03/2023 17:28

Full sugar coke is essentially carbonated vegetable juice with added sugar. It's not going to rot you like chemicals that do the dame as formaldehyde, something we use to stop bodies rotting. Maybe more accurate to say they might preserve your insides but def not in a way you want!

I didn't know about Lucozade, the school nurse used to keep some in the cupboard.

I cant have coke anymore and do miss it occasionally, but i have yet to find a drink that that have AS in that is palatable . The only fizzy drinks i can have now are flavoured sparkling water, but even then you have to be careful as M&S have some unsweetened flavoured waters but also have "plant" based sweeteners which just taste nasty.
It really annoys me that so many people have fallen for Stevia is "natural" and as marketed as natural or plant based when it has to highly processed to extract the sweet part, but not all parts of the leaf are licensed for consumption, and it just doesnt taste very good, leaves a coating on my tongue.
