Who knew that they are putting aspartame into full fat Pepsi now?

All cans of full sugar Pepsi now have less than half the sugar content. The rest has been replaced with aspartame.

The cans look exactly the same, and you won’t know the difference unless you read the ingredients listing.

You could also tell the difference by looking at the traffic light system on the side of cans. Old cans will have 40% RDA sugar. The new cans now have 17% RDA sugar.

Unbelievable that they have made a change like this without doing anything to draw attention to it, or to let consumers know.

How many people with allergies or medical issues relating to aspartame will buy Pepsi without realising??

I honestly think the sugar tax will be one of those things we look back on and think WTF?! Like the crusade against fat/low fat products

But sugar isn't inherently bad for you. Most fake sweeteners are. Although I believe Stevia is actually natural so may be ok. Its the ones that taste of plastic I hate. A chemist friend did some experiments with her students and she's told me to never touch the diet stuff especially aspartame.

Absolutely.

We can be trusted to manage our own natural sugar intake ourselves, but we can all consume as much artificial chemicals as well like!

Yep and they haven't been around long enough to know the lt effects. Autopsies in the USA in the next 50 or so years will be interesting, fake and processed foods but especially fake foods will come to be seen as madness I'm sure. Plus people who drink the diet version are far more likely to be or become overweight.

Fentiman's have also just gone over to the dark side by replacing sugar with stevia

It tastes dreadful now.

No! Say it ain’t so! I was just thinking that at least there’s always Fentiman’s cherry cola.

I’m still not over regular Fevertree Madagascan Cola disappearing when it was replaced with the ‘Refreshingly Light’ version, which at least is less sugar rather than sweeteners. But has a much flatter flavour. And that was years ago.

We are looking at it now and thinking WTF to be fair.

It's just another thing for the government to fuck with for the Tax. It reminds me of the E numbers thing making "all" kids hyper and naughty in the 90s/2000s. Absolutely no correlation with all the adults who were kids at that time getting adult diagnoses of ADHD.... Nope. I would much rather drink sugars and devour e-numbers than drink plastic tasting chemicals, especially when it's know they are pretty bad for you!

It's also interesting how Alcohol is much worse and has massive impacts on peoples physical and mental health and negative societal impact on every person yet the gov't can't be fucked to do anything about that. - No. Lets take sugar out of things instead 🙄

Sep200024 · 23/03/2023 21:31

As someone who does not drink or smoke, a full sugar fizzy drink is the one treat I look forward to on a night out as ‘designated driver’ 😞

Everybody around me drinking as much alcohol as they like, and I can’t have more than 17% of my recommended daily sugar intake in one bastard drink!

Spar have put sweetener in their smoothies. I drink Coke Zero anyway but this was rank.

Nat6999 · 23/03/2023 21:35

You need one of those corner shops that buys all their pop from abroad, I've had branded pop imported from Turkey, no sweetners & full sugar.

Exactly. People can get so pissed that you can't walk down some roads in towns/cities at night, fights, assaults, impact on families when members become alcoholics and all the horrible shit that comes with that. Not to mention a whole bloody island wanting to ban British people specifically because alcohol culture is so fucking awful that they hate us.

A full sugar fizzy drink doesn't drive anyone to that kind of behaviour but there are too many Gov hands in too many pockets so they won't ban alcohol, which would take FAR more pressure off the NHS and benefit our physical and societal health than pissing about over a bit of sugar.

I watched far more alcoholics wither away and die in Pallative and even Acute care than I did fat people, diabetics or people who had a bit of damn sugar in their diet.

I am hoping that imports will become a lot more wide scale to bring the prices down to the "normal" again. I used to do an order from an American grocery store every other month until it got super popular to have it in corner shops and those big stores in town and they started running out of stock (because it was being bought and inflated in price x500 by corner stores). Before that it was still a bit more expensive but no where near it is now.

I just want my fucking LUCKY CHARMS back.

Elphame · 23/03/2023 21:44

There is a Facebook group called "SOS save our sugar" which is great for finding suppliers of full sugar drinks for those of us who have to resort to taking our own out with us now. I recommend joining if you hate the sweeteners

MissDollyMix · 23/03/2023 21:48

I don’t know what it is but I’ve recently noticed that even when comparing Pepsi max with Coke Zero the latter tastes much better. I used to like Pepsi - even the diet one was ok but last time I bought it I had to pour it away, it tasted awful!!

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/03/2023 21:48

I prefer Pepsi Max, than normal Pepsi or Coke.

KatyMac · 23/03/2023 21:53

Fgs that explains the 10 day upset tummy I've had with huge pain because I had some pepsi

I've been so so ill - it's like being poisoned

What can i drink now? They took ribena off me and now this

You know I am an adult, if I want to drink alcohol or smoke I can but God forbid I want to drink something that doesn't make me ill

mrsconradfisher · 23/03/2023 22:00

I know, I’m so incredibly angry. I’m actually allergic to sweeteners they make me really ill. Severe migraines, upset stomach and a rash. There are very few fizzy drinks I can drink now, Pepsi was my go to drink which I now can’t have. There are literally hundreds of drinks that people who want diet drinks full of chemicals can drink so why change it.
M&S used to make lemonade with sugar but haven’t seen it for ages. The only other place is Waitrose which sells High Juice Squash with sugar but there isn’t one near us.

Sugar is terrible for you.

It really isn’t. It has been around for far longer than the awful chemicals found in diet drinks.

Wonder if they'd do the same in response to a plastic tax? Mass-polluting pricks.

That's such a good idea
