Who knew that they are putting aspartame into full fat Pepsi now?

All cans of full sugar Pepsi now have less than half the sugar content. The rest has been replaced with aspartame.

The cans look exactly the same, and you won’t know the difference unless you read the ingredients listing.

You could also tell the difference by looking at the traffic light system on the side of cans. Old cans will have 40% RDA sugar. The new cans now have 17% RDA sugar.

Unbelievable that they have made a change like this without doing anything to draw attention to it, or to let consumers know.

How many people with allergies or medical issues relating to aspartame will buy Pepsi without realising??

Since they brought the sugar tax in so many drinks I used to enjoy are now ruined for me. Ribena, Lucozade, Irn-Bru, Fevertree full sugar cola, San Pellegrino and now Pepsi and Fentimans cherry cola which were the only soft drinks I was still buying. I’ve also taken to buying imported strawberry Fanta when I can find it.

Luckily I don’t feel unwell with artificial sweeteners but I just really hate the taste to the point that I simply don’t enjoy drinking the stuff anymore. My family laugh at me because they can’t taste the difference but I know the instant they’ve changed the formula without having to look it up as it just suddenly tastes disgusting (and when I look it up sure enough the recipe has been recently changed). It’s so frustrating. I knew they’d changed Pepsi as I had one earlier today and thought something was wrong with it.

Irn Bru have released a 1901 version which has no sweeteners! I absolutely hate them too so am always looking.

It now tastes absolutely rank. I had to go out again to get coca cola. Will never buy pepsi again, fake crap that rots your insides. These chemicals are so much worse than sugar!

I love that people concerned about 'fake crap that rots your insides' are still happy to drink coca cola, just not aspartame😅

I don't know but I do know that the term 'full fat' coke irrationally winds me up!!!!
There's no fat in any coke!!!
Just sugar or no sugar.

Same! It's not "full fat", there is no fat!

We go all out at Costco and buy a crate of Irn Bru original 1901. Everyone hates the artificial stuff here.

Saying 'full fat' instead of 'full sugar' is a joke?

I don't get it, sorry.

If you never drink soft drinks, why are you even on this thread? 🤷‍♀️

but all processed food change their formulations constantly

it isn't headline news, just check the packets if you have allergies

Ilooklikesusiedent · 24/03/2023 07:19

I have a condition meaning I can't go near phenylalanine (illness 1) or aspartame (illness 2) so thanks for sharing OP.

I'll be drinking straight up vodka in the pub at this rate 😂 there'll be nothing else.

I'm joking, I hate vodka ...

Ilooklikesusiedent · 24/03/2023 07:21

Oh actually I won't be because most of our pubs shut down in March :/ but that's another story for another thread

There’s more caffeine in Diet Coke than normal Coke. It’s not caffeine free.

Another76543 · 24/03/2023 07:29

The sugar tax was a ridiculous idea in my opinion. It just gives people the impression that drinks/food stuffed full of artificial chemicals and sugar alternatives are a healthy alternative to a bit of sugar. This has absolutely not been proven. There are lots of studies which show that the artificial sweeteners are worse.

It’s not just about those with allergies (who would be justifiably pissed off if there’s no warning on the packaging) but also those of us who dislike the taste of sweeteners. Once upon a time if we fancied a cold fizzy drink there were plenty we could choose from. Now it’s literally just Coke, and if they decide to do the same thing there won’t be any. That’s why it’s ‘headline news’.

AreMyDucksinarow · 24/03/2023 07:33

Back to Coke then 🙄

I did wonder why it tasted weird when I had some on Tuesday.

Doesn’t help the diabetics in an emergency everything having bloody artificial crap in it.

User963 · 24/03/2023 07:35

It’s the same with salt. That’s gradually being replaced with msg which is a huge migraine trigger for people. 😫

Ratatouille1 · 24/03/2023 07:36

Damn, I used full fat coke ( let it go flat a bit) as a sports drink when I did ultramarathons. I love the taste, its full of calories and doesn't give me gastric distress like sports drinks with fructose in.

Stugs · 24/03/2023 07:37

AdoraBell · 23/03/2023 21:00

San Pelligrino have done the same to cut down on sugar, might be a different artificial sweetener.

Yes - this is really sad, it's now called Light. And it's horrid now

Does it really need to be spelled out in such laborious detail

Whether its joke, play on words, tongue in cheek, however you want it described, its a reference to people eating/drinking low cal things, which invariably in the last few decades has been 'low fat' because mostly one applies that to foodstuffs.

The term low sugar isnt really as widely spoken about in terms of foodstuff descriptions. The diet industry lexicon is more around 'low fat foods' certainly since the low fat phenomenon of the 80s and 90s. So when people are referring to normal coke, they'll say 'full fat' meaning 'not the diet version, not the low sugar version.

Jesus.

I probably drink about 2 or 3 cans of coke a year. Thats it. Its usually in the summer, when its really hot and we might be out for the day, cycling or a long day and I really need it

Im not sports person, Im quite overweight but thats my pick up if I really need it. The rest of the time I dont drink fizzy pop and certainly not anything with artificial sweetners. Im quite angry about how they have infiltrated everything actually even savoury foods.

bruffin · 23/03/2023 23:07

San Pellegrino have at least started making classic again without Stevia. They also do Essenza which has no sugar and no AS which is nice

Is this without any artificial sweetners? Where is this from?

its not headline news that EVERY processed food can change its formula, and it is happening absolutely constantly.

The packaging tells you what the contents are, look at the packaging of the item in your hand, not your memory of the item you bought a month ago, there is no reason to expect they are the same.

I had an allergic reaction to a product labelled "hypoallergenic" once, and when I contacted the company, it took weeks to work out which exact formula I had been exposed to, as the ingredients change so regularly, and with storage, and distributions taken into account, it could have been one of about 6 or 7 different formulas.

I hadn't kept the packet, but I was told there was no reason to think even the same product on the same shelf in the same shop would have been the same formula

Nimbostratus100 · 24/03/2023 07:57

If you look at which food is considered kosher out of all the food sold in the UK, this list is updated every few months, and can be completely rewritten every couple of years

Nimbostratus100 · 24/03/2023 07:57

people have completely the wrong idea of manufacturing, it is never set in stone

PurpleParrotfish · 24/03/2023 08:19

@Nimbostratus100 You’re missing the point. It’s not about one recipe changing, it’s about the almost complete disappearance of fizzy drinks without sweeteners, and that people are pissed off by that. Either because of allergies or because, like me, they find the taste of sweeteners unpleasant.
