I'm apparently related to Edward III - not sure that counts though.

Possibly related to Sir Francis Dereham (the one who had an affair with Katherine Howard) mum is still trying to find proof of that relationship.

I'm related to the Howard family

I am descended from John Dee who was astronomical and medical advisor to Queen Elizabeth 1 (according to family legend)

If this was me I'd be telling random people in the street every single day!

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 24/03/2023 08:47

My extremely tenuous one - I have a cousin (of some kind) who was a royal mistress. (Not it's not Rose Hanbury. Or Camilla).

MapleSyrupSweet · 24/03/2023 08:55

My best friend is related to a completely iconic pop star who is has been famous since the late 70's and is still performing.

BurningTheToast · 24/03/2023 09:13

Tracing my family tree and it looks as though I'm descended from Mary Boleyn (sister of Anne and 'The Other Boleyn Girl' of novel/film fame). If I can confirmed that I can go back to all sorts of interesting people.

So yes, I'm related to a household name but then so are probably thousands of other people if they can join the dots. Hope this isn't too outing!

I know this isn’t the type of thing you were going for but my great, great, great……… grandad was King Canute.

My great great grandmother was a friend of Howard Carter's and came with him to Egypt as one of the official artists documenting everything they found in Tutankhamen's tomb. We still have an album of her drawings - they had to sketch every single treasure from the tomb to catalogue them.

This is ridiculously amazing!!!!!

I’m descended from Grania O’Malley Queen of the pirates. She was badass!

How amazing! I didn't know pirates had a queen (and presumably a king?)

FrankandWalters · 24/03/2023 07:58

That is a deeply cool thing to have in your family tree! I’m assuming your family didn’t get hit by the Curse?

Ha! No curses here 😁

By far the most amazing famous connection! Wow

She was leader of the O’Malley clan in the west of Ireland and more of a licensed Privateer like Francis Drake than a “yo ho ho and a bottle of rum” Caribbean pirate. She met Elizabeth 1 twice too.

The Uk population in 1524 was 2.3 million, so there weren't many people compared to today.

LittleFingerStrength · 24/03/2023 10:50

The population fugues from Henry VIII may also include Ireland, you would have to ask a stat/historian.

They don't. Or Scotland - 2.3m is the figure for Enand and Wales

KnittingNeedles · 24/03/2023 11:07

Lots of people like to imagine they are descended from Robert the Bruce, or William the COnqueror, or some other famous historical figure.

Most of us with a British background probably do have a significant person way, way back along our blood line. However (and this is my field of study), proving it is almost impossible. Compulsory records do not exist before the mid-19th century. Parish records of births, marriages and deaths are patchy. You would have to be lucky to prove a definite link and back it up with documentary evidence.

Clicking on hints on Ancestry trees created by other people is not proof.

Please tell me you know the musical The Pirate Queen! It's about her :)

I wonder if we share ancestors?
somebody in my maternal.Grandmother's family allegedly had an affair with a minor royal.(generations ago)and had a child ,mother and child were financially taken care of but never formally acknowledged.

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 24/03/2023 11:28

Tenuous one: my husband's great uncle by marriage's brother might have pinched the World Cup. Nothing was proven.

Franticbutterfly · 24/03/2023 12:38

RenoDakota · 23/03/2023 23:26

My ex husband's father was the cousin of one of the greatest and most famous English actors of his generation (active 1930s to 1980s)

Laurence Olivier?

davegrohll · 24/03/2023 12:48

No but my cousin was shagging an England player 🙄

Rhaenys · 24/03/2023 17:47

One of my great aunts was married to the brother of a British TV stalwart but they’re divorced now. I never met them.

CriticalAlert · 24/03/2023 17:57

I am Kim Kardashian.

Season0fTheWitch · 24/03/2023 18:00

No, but my husband dated a famous female TV presenter for a while. And he's vaguely related to some royalty.
