Pay grandparents and people who've taken retirement

To look after grandchildren? People are struggling for childcare surely this could ease the situation? Obviously there are people that don't have parents who could do this.

People are struggling to pay for childcare, not find it. So why would this help? They wouldn’t be able to claim any of this money back unless the grandparents are ofsted registered businesses, and the grandparents would have to be self employed and declare the income.

Shinyandnew1 · 17/03/2023 20:45

I think anyone that has parents/grandparents who want to look after their children, has probably already asked them!

BernadetteIsMySister · 17/03/2023 20:46

Pay grandparents out of the public purse? They don't even fund actual settings properly yet!

Dacadactyl · 17/03/2023 20:47

Lol im only 37 but you couldnt pay me enough to look after grandkids! I was a SAHM for years and have no desire to do it for grandkids too!

Dacadactyl · 17/03/2023 20:49

Do you mean the government to pay for this? If thats the case, they shoyld pay parents to give up work and mind the kids, not grandparents.

Liorae · 17/03/2023 21:05

The very few people I know who use grandparents as child care do pay them. Out of their own pockets.

Soontobe60 · 17/03/2023 21:10

I look free my grandchildren for free. You couldn’t pay me enough to look after someone else’s children😂😂

Itsnotfairhuff · 17/03/2023 21:11

And grandparents are going to be monitored by Ofsted and use the EYFS framework are they? 🤨

Would you mind if they didnt? I mean, if my mum was prepared to look after my kids, i wouldnt care less if she didnt follow a framework. She knows how to bring kids up right as far as im concerned, she did it twice already.

Itsnotfairhuff · 17/03/2023 21:14

Doesn't bother me at all!

Shinyandnew1 · 17/03/2023 21:15

@Failingatthemoment do you mean the government should pay grandparents or the parents??

WandaWonder · 17/03/2023 21:15

I would help sometimes but I had my time having a young child. The last thing I want to do when I retire is look after more regularly

But like anything if it works for everyone doing it great

AuntieMarys · 17/03/2023 21:15

No way would I look after children. I'm in my 60s....didn't like it for my own dcs.

Viviennemary · 17/03/2023 21:15

Absolutely mad idea. More folk on the gravy train paid for by the magic money tree.

Parents manage to raise kids without a framework or Ofsted

Anotherturnipforthebooks · 17/03/2023 21:18

@WandaWonder

Not really - most parents do use some funded hours for pre-school which is exactly this.

I agree. The magic money tree has fallen over and died.

Yes...and most of those parents (on MN anyway) baulk at the very idea that their childcare provider is "raising their children" for them.

Will you be coming back to clarify what you meant?

Anotherturnipforthebooks · 17/03/2023 21:25

@Dacadactyl

So parents shouldn't send their children out of the home for education?

Nutstuts · 17/03/2023 21:31

I think the government is missing the point really. Most ‘older’ people I know have absolutely no intention of ever going back to work. They don’t want to.

Most ‘younger’ people don’t want to work until they drop dead of old age either.

Its ridiculous.

Nobody should pay grandparents to help out unless the grandparents are hard up in which case it’s the parents responsibility to pay.

Its the governments responsibility to make childcare affordable. Whether they do remains to be seen.

Dacadactyl · 17/03/2023 21:31

@Anotherturnipforthebooks it doesnt matter what I think. I did what i thought was best for my children when they were pre school age.

You stated that "most parents use funded hours for pre school childcare. Which is exactly this" in response to a poster saying "parents raise their kids without ofsted or a framework".

I was just pointing out that on here, it's tantamount to sacrilege to state that these working parents arent raising their own kids.

MissyB1 · 17/03/2023 21:35

I’m looking forward to when ds and dil have children, I will volunteer to help with the childcare. I don’t want paying for it though. And I definitely don’t want the government involved in any way.

I am curious whether you stayed at home with your children, or did you work?

Anotherturnipforthebooks · 17/03/2023 21:39

@Dacadactyl

Wow. This escalated quickly.

If you're happy with how you did things for your family, why do you feel the need to jump on people about it? You raised your children the way you wanted. That's great.

Now why not allow people to do the same for their own family without spewing emotive bile online.
