Do you have lots of biscuits/ cakes in your house?

I'm trying to lose weight ( it's proving hard) and I have 3 children that literally eat non stop as they are very active/ growing etc. i am finding when I don't have snacks in the house it's easier for me but I don't want to be a complete fun Sponge when the kids bring friends over or DP fancies a few crisps with his week end beer. But... i am rubbish with will power. So my question is how do you manage snacks when you have family living with you?

Husband always has a stock of biscuits - I just try to pretend they aren't there.

SamMil · 17/03/2023 19:37

We don't have cake or biscuits in the cupboard routinely. We pick something up from the shop if we have guests or fancy a treat.

Comedycook · 17/03/2023 19:40

Yes I have lots of snacks! I have a teenage ds, he's be pretty peeved if there wasn't an endless supply of snacks!

SBHon · 17/03/2023 19:41

Crisps are my obsession; if they’re in the house I want to eat them all the time.

So I only buy them for specific times (eg like you said: if people are coming over, or if with a weekend beer). Buy specific packs (ie not a massive multipack that lasts a while), eat them as a one off, move on.

I find I enjoy them much more that way too.

Mossstitch · 17/03/2023 19:43

Buy ones I don't like but they do😂 like monster munch👹🤢

Emanresu9 · 17/03/2023 19:45

If kids having a friend over I buy biscuits etc specifically. Otherwise if they want a snack they’ll have a yoghurt, cheee string, fruit, hard boiled egg, falafel etc from the fridge.

likewise with the crisps I’d just buy the specific bag of crisps on a Friday for the beer.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 17/03/2023 19:47

We keep sweets but put them behind all of our tins and pasta boxes etc. Not right at eye level. Being the lazy bugger that I am, I only bother to fetch them out for other people.

TwoMonthsOff · 17/03/2023 19:47

No but a good variety of cheese, i get anxious if I only have two or three different types 🐷

skippy67 · 17/03/2023 19:49

We have a snack drawer. Crisps, nuts popcorn. No biscuits or cake though.

Aftjbtibg · 17/03/2023 19:50

In my head they are the kids and not mine to eat.

Aphrathestorm · 17/03/2023 19:52

I don't buy junk for the DCs.

Dont want them to end up with the same problems as me!

But if I am getting them something (like if it's in the offer bin or having a friend round etc than I get ones I don't like!

TheFormidableMrsC · 17/03/2023 20:01

I buy bourbons because I hate them and they are DS's favourites. So I don't eat those. If I keep snacks they are under 100 cals, think Curly Wurly, Skinny Whip. I do the same with crisps. That way I can still have them as a snack but as part of a healthy diet. I use MFP to keep on track.

Nsky62 · 17/03/2023 20:08

I only keep a few bits in, as trying to lose weight, rich tea biscuits, unexciting, and plain crisps and fruit in

gingercat02 · 17/03/2023 20:13

Buy ones you don't like. We have Oreos, choc chip cookies and various cereal bars

commentnotaquestion · 17/03/2023 20:15

I try to buy ones I don't like - e.g. we have a packet of Choc Hobnobs that have been on the go for ages. I can't imagine eating one. But a packet of Jaffa Cakes wouldn't last the afternoon!

Dacadactyl · 17/03/2023 20:17

I generally only buy 12 packs of crisps a week. 10 of them are for the kids lunches. I buy no other treats or crisps in the weekly ahop.

If we fancy something midweek or whatever, we have to make a concerted effort to go out and buy it.

I never have the kids friends round unexpectedly and my 2 arent used to snacking on snack food.

DanceMonster · 17/03/2023 20:18

I have 3 kids but we don’t really have biscuits/cakes in the house routinely. We currently have a chocolate fudge cake in the house that I picked up from M&S earlier as a weekend treat, but that only happens every few weeks.

WeightoftheWorld · 17/03/2023 20:18

We usually do but only a small selection so we buy frequently. If I know we are getting people over I often pop out in advance to get something specific for them as all we might have sometimes is supermarket own brand rich tea for example so nothing exciting for guests! I find keeping smaller quantities in helps with the will power thing because if I eat tons of biscuits one night then there will be none left for tomorrow. And I'm too lazy to go the shop that often! So it means we are more mindful of portion control hah. Most of the biscuits/crisps etc we buy is just for DH and I, I tend to buy different snacks for the kids but that's because they're only little (both under 5) so I still can get away with it.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 17/03/2023 20:24

My snack cupboard is always fully loaded! But when I’m full I’m full.

Tubbyinthehottub · 17/03/2023 20:27

Yes. Always have loads of biscuits and cake and sweets and chocolate and crisps and nuts. We like snacks and eat them a few times a day, sort of in moderation. I'm not really a fatty but I'd be beside myself without elevenses biscuits and I like some crisps or nuts before cooking dinner and some chocolate afterwards. And a bit of cake usually after lunch. I sound like a right glutton Grin

QuirkyBuffy · 17/03/2023 20:27

I only buy flavours of crisp I don’t like and chocolate biscuits I don’t like ( like wagon wheels)

OnTheThames · 17/03/2023 20:36

No. If we fancy treats, we buy them and eat them that day.

Have never had a biscuit tin or kept stores of cake, crisps etc in the cupboard. I don’t think it encourages healthy eating habits in my kids, and I don’t want to be constantly tempted to eat shit,

GreyCarpet · 17/03/2023 20:38

We don't have crisps n crappy foodstuffs in the house. I never have.

My daughter is nearly 17. If she wants something, she'll buy it herself but I don't ever buy stuff like that.

Sunsetintheeast · 17/03/2023 20:38

Nope. If I make it, we can have it.

baking a cake slows down the eating.

If you have crap in the house, you’ll eat crap.

VillanellePinkDress · 17/03/2023 20:41

My parents always had biscuits and cakes in, my Mum was forever baking. Now I have a ridiculous sweet tooth and struggle with my weight.
I personally think its better not to have all that much in, then nobody gets too used to it and it's more of a treat. My DH just been told he's diabetic too, which is purely diet related, so another thing to consider.
