Do you have lots of biscuits/ cakes in your house?

I'm trying to lose weight ( it's proving hard) and I have 3 children that literally eat non stop as they are very active/ growing etc. i am finding when I don't have snacks in the house it's easier for me but I don't want to be a complete fun Sponge when the kids bring friends over or DP fancies a few crisps with his week end beer. But... i am rubbish with will power. So my question is how do you manage snacks when you have family living with you?

Nope. (Unless it's Christmas, birthdays etc)

The rule is: if you want a treat, you have to make it. The ingredients for flapjacks, pancakes etc are always there.

It's amazing how often sloth wins out over gluttony in these circumstances 😆

iloveyankeecandle · 17/03/2023 20:43

Always biscuits. Cakes are more of a treat

JockTamsonsBairns · 17/03/2023 20:47

My DCs, now teens, didn't grow up with snacking, so it's not really on their radar to do so. DS(15) likes a cup of tea and two Digestive biscuits at bedtime (he was born 60 😂) but I'm not remotely tempted by a Digestive biscuit.

DH likes to have a bowl of dry roasted peanuts or Bombay mix with a few beers on a Friday night but, again, I don't particularly fancy that.

Either DH or I will stop at the supermarket on the way home from work on a Friday to get the snacks for the evening - but, otherwise, we don't really hold a stock of snacks as such.

hiredandsqueak · 17/03/2023 20:49

I bake so there is always cake and cookies here but I only bake what I don't eat so I get the joy of baking but don't eat it. If I make a fruitcake then I have to eat it so I make chocolate based cakes and cookies because I don't eat them.

Floralnomad · 17/03/2023 20:50

We always have lots of biscuits and I just leave them alone , my husband reckons he doesn’t eat many , our daughter is coeliac and doesn’t eat them and the dog can’t open the tin so I’m not sure why I have to refill the tin twice a week .

RunTowardsTheLight · 17/03/2023 20:56

I have three teens and we have crisps and biscuits in the cupboard. We never ever had treats when I was growing up so I blame my weight problem on that! (I never learnt to self regulate as a child.)

I agree with posters who say they choose things they don't really like. Also I'm using My Fitness Pal at the moment, so I'm allowed to have things from the snack cupboard as long as I log them and include them in my calorie allowance.

CMOTDibbler · 17/03/2023 20:56

The only biscuits we have are plain digestives for the chickens, so I do feel like a bit of a failure on the offering them to guests front. We might get a cake at the weekend, but not in the week

TheHouseNextDoor · 17/03/2023 21:01

Not these days are the children are older and buy their own stuff.

When they were little I bought stuff that I didn't like.

bloodywhitecat · 17/03/2023 21:04

No because if I don't buy them then I don't eat them. I keep a supply of high calorie bits for the toddler but buy things I wouldn't eat.

Streamside · 17/03/2023 21:07

I'm blessed with a bust which shows every ounce I put on so I try not to have any cakes/biscuits etc in the house at all.

TheBirdintheCave · 17/03/2023 21:16

We have one bar of Dairy Milk chocolate that comes out when the toddler goes to bed. We eat two squares a night which is just enough to satisfy the sweet craving after tea :)

RainLover · 17/03/2023 21:20

we don’t have anything like that in the house routinely. Snack on fruit, yoghurts, veggies, boiled eggs etc. Often but crisps/nuts for a weekend treat but just buy enough for that evening.

ZombiesForever · 17/03/2023 21:25

Yes!! I am like you, if they were not in the house I would be fine. But I have teenagers and little willpower.

Snoken · 17/03/2023 21:26

I never have crisps, just never got into the habit of eating them. I do usually have pistachios though, but just the plain ones. In terms of sweet stuff I buy 100g of dark chocolate on a Saturday and then that lasts me a week. My DS sometimes buy something for himself on his way home from school or if he’s out with friends, but I don’t touch that.

for me these things aren’t snacks, they are special treats. Snacks is carrot sticks and hummus, lentil cakes, fruit etc. things that aren’t a meal, but still have good nutritional value.

kitsuneghost · 17/03/2023 21:26

When I lost a lot of weight previously I didn't touch other half's treats. I told myself they are not mine and it would be really mean for me to eat all his snacks. The visions of him going to get a snack and greedy guts here had scoffed them all was enough to put me off touching 'his bag'.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/03/2023 21:30

None at all. No snack stuff at all.

mondaytosunday · 17/03/2023 21:42

I try to only buy stuff my daughter likes that I don't. Luckily she doesn't like chocolate! But I also find it's not really biscuits or cakes, it's overeating in general.

Tubbyinthehottub · 17/03/2023 21:42

I'm flabbergasted by all these people who have NO snacks. Or buy things they don't like. Are you not hungry between meals? I eat decent sized breakfast, lunch and dinner but I need snacks in-between. In fact my stomach is rumbling a bit now because we had an earlyish dinner. Also, is it not miserable only eating meals? I don't understand it.

FayCarew · 17/03/2023 21:44

We only eat massive salads and free range roast chicken here.

I do have snacks, I just don’t have crisps/cake/chocolate. I have fruit usually, or chopped veg, or Greek yoghurt.
Why would only eating meals be miserable? I have enjoyable, filling meals!

Exactly this.

I have enjoyable filling meals as well but I like cake, crisps etc too. I'd be sad never eating them. I like fruit but it's just like an extra snack, not an actual snack for me.

Chickydoo · 17/03/2023 21:47

We have crisps or bread sticks or peanuts etc.
No cake, sweets or biscuits, nobody really eats them, I've thrown them out in the past.

Well we’re all different I guess, it doesn’t make me at all sad not eating crisps, chocolate, cake etc. I love good food and all our ‘spare’ money goes on Michelin starred restaurants etc, but I don’t really see cake and crisps as good food. I don’t really have any desire for it TBH.

Babdoc · 17/03/2023 22:04

I never bought crisps either when the DC lived here or since they’ve grown up and moved out.
We would occasionally make a batch of popcorn as a treat, and I would make cakes for their birthdays and sometimes to have as a pudding. I always had crackers for cheese, and would buy sweet biscuits fairly regularly. Neither child was ever overweight. They ate healthy home cooked meals daily, always with plenty of vegetables.
