I'm trying to lose weight ( it's proving hard) and I have 3 children that literally eat non stop as they are very active/ growing etc. i am finding when I don't have snacks in the house it's easier for me but I don't want to be a complete fun Sponge when the kids bring friends over or DP fancies a few crisps with his week end beer. But... i am rubbish with will power. So my question is how do you manage snacks when you have family living with you?

No cakes/biscuits/crisps here. There’s always chocolate, 70% cocoa and not eaten that often.

We usually eat cake at cafés on the weekend, or I sometimes bake. And pre-schooler is given cake-type desserts at lunchtime by nursery.

Snack foods here are:
Cheeses (crackers optional)
Tinned tuna or mackerel
Olives, gherkins
Veg like carrots, cucumber, cherry tomatoes
Lots of fruit
Nuts (usually keep pistachios, cashews, pecans, walnuts)
Popcorn (buying kernels and popping them in a saucepan - great fun)
Flapjacks

It wasn’t some kind of virtuous thing, we just tended to eat proper meals and didn’t need extra.

People eat in different ways. I have two teenagers, both a healthy weight. We always sit down as a family to eat home cooked meals. One likes proper meals and doesn't have many snacks. The other constantly grazes, she always leaves food on her plate, and never wants a second course, but she'll then make herself a wrap to eat an hour later (which she then leaves the last little bit of). They've been the same since they were babies, the 'proper meals' one was the most efficient BFer ever, the grazer was one of those babies who would fall asleep at the boob then would object if you unlatched, then would have a few sucks before falling asleep again and as an older baby was constantly distracted.

Didn't have cake or biscuits in the house growing up. Sweets/choc/crisps bought as treats now and then. The four of us kids are slim or slim-ish adults.

We don't have cake or biscuits in the house. Again, bought as treats now and then or for visitors. All slim.

You crave what you eat.

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 18/03/2023 09:15

For me, as others have said, I just buy the ones I don’t like if I’m trying to cut back.

That means Walkers crisps, bourbon biscuits, Gold bars, yogurt raisins etc in our house. The teens demolish them, I’m not tempted.

MixedCouple · 15/07/2023 20:34

We have special snacks for the kids only. And for us adults I home bake a treat once a week. Or we will go out for coffee and have a sweet treat. Otherwise nothing kept in the house.
Also the snacks for the kids are healthy no salt not sugar so I could have them 😂

Annaisatwat · 15/07/2023 20:39

Absolutely none.

The kids have a couple of things on a saturday - ice cream, or a packet of crips and a chocolate. But that is bought there and then and eaten watching a film or out on a walk.

I used to weigh 22 stone. I learned about sugar addiction the hard way and now I haven’t touched any in a long time.

WhatADrabCarpet · 15/07/2023 20:56

We only buy biscuits if someone comes to work in the house or garden.

Sunsetintheeast · 15/07/2023 21:26

We eat what we make.

KohlaParasaurus · 15/07/2023 21:43

Yes, if you arrive unannounced at my house I'll be able to offer you a selection of biscuits with your tea or coffee. I'm unlikely to share my chocolate stash, though.

Yum - tinned tuna for a snack 🙄

Oblomov23 · 16/07/2023 09:18

Yes, always. Tonnes, a huge amount.

We have a biscuit and chocolate biscuit cupboard with about 8 varieties in, eg mint penguins, custard creams, chocolate hob-nobs, fox's crunch creams. The biscuits go from there to the biscuit tin.

And a huge crisp cupboard with many varieties- multi packs of - hula hoops, nik naks, squares, wheat crunches, Aldi ridged salt crisps etc.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/07/2023 09:46

TBH we hardly ever have them unless guests are coming - we’d only eat them! I made a sponge cake the other day, only because new foreign neighbours who’d invited us for tea a while ago, were coming for a reciprocal visit. I could easily pig out on a freshly made sponge cake every day if it was sitting there looking at me.

We do indulge in chocolate every few days, though, and dh regularly buys big bags of almonds to snack on.

When dds were at home I usually had a stock of mini Mars Bars for them, but they had very little other junk and weren’t overweight.

notasillysausage · 16/07/2023 09:50

No, I’ve eaten them all 😂

Beezknees · 16/07/2023 09:55

Yeah, DS15 is a bottomless pit like many teen boys so I have plenty of snacks in. I try and buy things that I'm not keen on myself, he loves oreos and I don't like them so I get those and then I'm not tempted to eat them.

Vettrianofan · 16/07/2023 10:48

Malted milks and rich teas routinely in biscuit barrel.

SunRainStorm · 16/07/2023 11:05

I don't keep biscuits or cake in the house.

If someone came by unexpectedly I would use a 10 minute scones recipe and feed them that with tea.

WillowtreeHouse · 16/07/2023 11:10

I always get snacks with my weekly shopping but once they're gone that's it, I don't buy more. I have a snack of mini daim bars and snack size Mars or Turkish delight that I have hidden and they are my snacks. I've lost almost 3 stone this year but I know if I have a little of something, that's enough to keep me happy. If I put everything in the cupboard at the same time it's gone in a day or two because DH and DS are both greedy sods. DD isn't that interested in snacks as much, she'll have one thing and that's enough.

Singlespies · 21/07/2023 08:53

No. Doesn't really fit with how we eat. One of my children didn't eat a great deal so I didn't want them eating foods with no nutritional value. I don't want to eat snack food either. My preference is to be slim.

drpet49 · 21/07/2023 08:55

SamMil · 17/03/2023 19:37

We don't have cake or biscuits in the cupboard routinely. We pick something up from the shop if we have guests or fancy a treat.

Me too

CeriB82 · 22/07/2023 08:25

Yes and i also bake on weekends. I have growing kids. But i dont tend to snack. I don’t have a sweet tooth.

Rolloisthebestpony · 22/07/2023 08:28

No. Snacks like crisps & biscuits are treats not staple food in this house.

So for example today I will take DD swimming then we will grab a coffee for me & she will choose a treat from the cafe.

But regular snacks we have in the house are fruit, yoghurt, breadsticks, piece of toast etc

Zipps · 22/07/2023 09:01

We're not snack lovers. We'll have a bit of decent chocolate at the end of a meal and sometimes a biscuit with our afternoon coffee but no cakes unless it's Christmas or someone's birthday.
We hardly ever have dessert out either. It's not good to let dc graze all day on rubbish it leads to obesity, diabetes etc. Dc will grow better without too much junk food. We're slim so are our adult dc.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 22/07/2023 09:10

Nope, not had crisps, biscuits, cake, chocolate or puddings other than protein yoghurts in the house since May. Used to have crisps for Saturday night and a small bar of Tony’s for Sundays.

Tbf, it was lockdown that saw me whack on some weight. I also grew up in a house without them so it’s not been a hard adjustment

I’ve lost (as of today!) 2 stones since May.
