Do you have lots of biscuits/ cakes in your house?

I'm trying to lose weight ( it's proving hard) and I have 3 children that literally eat non stop as they are very active/ growing etc. i am finding when I don't have snacks in the house it's easier for me but I don't want to be a complete fun Sponge when the kids bring friends over or DP fancies a few crisps with his week end beer. But... i am rubbish with will power. So my question is how do you manage snacks when you have family living with you?

We don’t routinely have cakes and biscuits in the house, but we do stop at the corner shop and get sweets sometimes after the park or pick up a ginger bread man from Greggs, so DD still gets treats. The “buy stuff you don’t like” idea wouldn’t work for me, I like ALL the biscuits 😂

We do have snacks available though- fruit, hummus, toast, cheese strings, crackers, packets of raisins, crisps.

I'm flabbergasted by all these people who have NO snacks. Or buy things they don't like. Are you not hungry between meals? I eat decent sized breakfast, lunch and dinner but I need snacks in-between. In fact my stomach is rumbling a bit now because we had an earlyish dinner. Also, is it not miserable only eating meals? I don't understand it.

Nah not boring at all. I taught myself how to cook my favourite restaurant meals so I'm always eating food I love. I guess I just don't have much of a sweet tooth. As long as I have a small bit of sugar in the evening I'm satisfied.

FayCarew · 17/03/2023 22:38

Feeling hungry between meals is because you eat the wrong things. It's a dip in sugar levels not real hunger.
Biscuits, cakes and crisps are nicer if you only have them very occasionally.

Startuplife · 17/03/2023 22:44

I have this exact issue. DP is tall, extremely skinny and works long days in a physical job so needs lots of snack/calories. I on the other hand do not!

I do the food shop so tend to buy things I don’t like and then for me I’ll buy low calorie snacks. It’s so hard though when we’ve just eaten dinner and he cracks open a share bag of crisps, eats the lot and doesn’t gain a pound!

Hmmm, I eat a lot of vegetables so maybe that's why I'm always ravenous for a biscuit. They do taste good every day though.
I meant I'd feel sad not having cakes, crisps etc in the same way that I'd be sad if I thought I was never really going to eat e.g. a nice lasagna again or a Greek salad or a soft boiled egg. I don't want to be denied any type of food as I enjoy them all.
I'm not eating a load of rubbish dinners, I'm a good cook. No waffles and nuggets here.

champagneplanet · 17/03/2023 22:50

We always have crisps and biscuits but at the same time there's always fruit and yoghurt too. The DCs have to ask for a snack, I rarely say no unless it's near mealtimes but I don't want it to be a free for all and I like to monitor their fruit/veg intake. I'm lucky that they tend to like a range of snacks and don't just automatically ask for the rubbish.

My snack cravings fluctuate throughout the month 😂 DH is a very snacky person but he does a manual job and burns calories so he gets away with it.

yogaretreat · 17/03/2023 22:50

I don't have any in.

If people were coming over I would buy a single pack or a nice cake from a bakery etc.

If I have a sweet tooth I have some Greek yoghurt with berries and a spoonful of biscoff in

DCxx · 17/03/2023 22:51

I was fit for a while there (did loads of running) and I didn’t buy anything like biscuits or chocolate during the week. We’d get snacks to watch tv with on a Friday night and usually go all out with it (full big bar of galaxy to myself etc). Now I’m pregnant, wfh and just generally not caring about weight anymore I buy biscuits and chocolate at every shop. I so wish I could stop it though, there is no need for me to be eating them after every meal and if I’m bored

FayCarew · 17/03/2023 22:55

I eat lots of vegetables too @Tubbyinthehottub but I don't each much refined carbs. I eat carbs but they're low-GI ones. If I am hungry, I'll wait until mealtime or have a piece of fruit because a biscuit or bag of crisps will not cut it.
I don't understand meals like cereal or toast for breakfast.

SophiaSW1 · 17/03/2023 22:58

Yes! We still have lots of Xmas chocolates

TangledUpinBlu · 17/03/2023 23:01

I don't buy cakes or biscuits, never eat cake because I don't like it, biscuits and pastries I like but only eat on rare occasions.
I don't really crave sweet stuff, I stopped buying crisps because my son doesn't eat them so will just buy a pack if people are coming for drinks or Christmas time always buy twigglets and mini cheddars.
I do like aldis cheese twists but only as a treat for holidays and highdays, wouldn't buy them every week.
Only snack food i buy regularly is brunch flap Jack bars and I keep them in my locker as a just in case I'm starving before lunch at work.
It's healthier not to snack.
I aim to fast for 16-18 hours a day so not very much time for snacks but even before I started fasting never really felt the need to eat before or after main meals, kid has never really done snacks or puddings, we are both a healthy weight.

Pasithean · 17/03/2023 23:04

I bake twice a week and buy crisps and chocolate. for DH. Me rarely.

Isledelaray · 17/03/2023 23:11

Yes, we buy them on a whim and then often don't eat then. We're.not that fussed with biscuits and cakes.

I love crisps but tend to stick to the low cal ones like wotsits/skips. We usually have a big sharing bag open that I'll have a handful of before dinner sometimes.

Neither of us are the type to have to eat something if it's there but I like.to know we've got things in.

We also have a pudding every night- small ice cream bar or yoghurt.

But everyone has different tastes. I’m genuinely not fussed about cake/chocolate/biscuits. I have them every now and then but I don’t miss them if I don’t have them. I don’t really get hungry between my meals so there would be no reason for me to feel sad at not having a biscuit.

mollyfolk · 17/03/2023 23:18

I snack everyday - I'd eat fruit or maybe a slice of brown bread with peanut butter or natural yogurt with honey and fruit.

If I feel like a sweet or a packet of crisps I buy them and we eat them but we don't keep them in the house generally. I bake weekly and we eat it over a couple of days but I don't want to be giving them or myself biccies or cake daily as I think it builds up an unhealthy habit.

Lcb123 · 17/03/2023 23:22

Only have cake on birthdays. Have boring biscuits like Digestives. Occasionally buy crisps. All that processed stuff is so so bad for you.

MyBloodyMaryneedsmoreTabasco · 17/03/2023 23:25

We have a full tube of pringles, a full pack of custard creams and some peanuts. Once they are gone, they won't be replaced until I go shopping again which will probably be next weekend.

Startingagainn · 17/03/2023 23:34

The best thing for me is not to buy cakes or pastries or crisps etc as I have a habit of eating the whole pack. I live alone, and my boyfriend avoids sweet things so I guess it’s easier for me . It must be a bit tricky for those with teenagers though.

I have a sweet tooth but I’m not really a big snacker as long I don’t have them in. If I do have a snack it will be a protein shake blended with banana or maybe a bit of whole fruit or veg. Today for snacks I’ve had a portion of grapes and also popped some popcorn kernels which I have plain.

I used to work in an office that was filled with cakes staff had brought in or their holiday chocs and I could never resist . I’m so glad I don’t have that temptation anymore.

if a friend is coming over I’ll buy biscuits or whatever a few hours before they arrive.

OurCrazyHouseIsFullOfLove · 17/03/2023 23:38

We always have a selection of cake crisp chocolate in the cupboard.
Dh loves loads of that sort of thing and the kids.

So if im cutting back i tend to buy what i dont like, bourbons, custard creams etc.

Schmutter · 17/03/2023 23:47

No, never.

We both grew up in houses where our mums baked constantly and there were always biscuits too. When I lived with my parents, a cup of tea went with a biscuit or something sweet.

But we have never had that habit and just don’t buy sweet stuff. My dh will bake a cake on birthdays but they rarely get finished.

InterstellarDrifter · 17/03/2023 23:50

We don't have any cakes and biscuits unless they're baked at home. Popcorn is popped at home too. We do buy crisps occasionally though.
I recently became really aware of ultraprocessed food and decided to cut right back on it.
Home baked tastes so much better even though we reduce the sugar by a quarter.

SkyandSurf · 18/03/2023 00:00

I have three children and don't keep biscuits and cakes in the house for this reason. My DH has no will power and will eat as much as is there.

We still have cakes and biscuits but I will make them for an occasion or once in a blue moon. That way they are ready when children are around so they get the first run at them, and DH only has to contend with what is leftover.

I've been known to chop up and freeze half a left over cake, so I can defrost it for the children. I've noticed DH doesn't go to the trouble of defrosting treats, he only scarfs them when they are immediately on hand.

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 18/03/2023 00:10

Growing up we had plain cereal (corn flakes etc), fruit, non-commercial bread, home made cakes without icing or adornment and crackers to snack on.
We ate them if we were hungry.

It was rubbish at the time, when you saw other kid’s home cupboards, but it means I’m used to eating only when I’m hungry mainly and I’ve never had a weight problem.

Teens/kids don’t need an endless supply of UPF crap……..

DiddyHeck · 18/03/2023 00:27

While no-one needs to be brought up in a house full of endless crap to snack on, I think those who rigidly say they have 'NO' snacks in the house because they can't self regulate, are being selfish.

How will your kids/teens learn to self regulate if you don't teach them to?

You're probably just repeating an endless circle of poor food relationships.

I don’t not have it in the house because I can’t self regulate. I don’t have it in the house because no one needs regular crisps, chocolate or cake. And I say ‘I’, but actually it’s my DH who does the food shopping and meal planning, but it would be the same if I did it. I buy stuff for my kids occasionally (as I said above I picked them up a chocolate fudge cake yesterday for them to have this weekend), we just don’t keep stashes of that sort of stuff in the cupboards.
They have sweets that they’ve got from parties etc in a tin which teaches them self regulation, and after Easter they’ll obviously have chocolate in the cupboard for example, I just don’t buy multipacks of crisps/biscuits etc.
