Have we gone mad or is this appropriate?

I wonder if any of the people criticising this have lost their mother?

I actually agree on this one. It stops kids living in foster families, in care, with grandparents or with two dads not feeling left out. Not everyone has a wonderful loving mother either.

Agree with this.

PinkFrogss · 17/03/2023 12:02

Makes sense, plenty of children don’t have a mother at all, or a mother that is appropriate to celebrate.

MelchiorsMistress · 17/03/2023 12:03

I’d assume they are catering for a child or children that they know doesn’t have a Mum. As they should.

Agreed.

Some kids have lost their mothers.

Why not 'Mothers and Others' - a day to honour your Mother or the very special person in your life who looks after you (or similar)?

That sounds good.

LittleFingerStrength · 17/03/2023 11:53

It indicates that they have poor safeguarding and will view female students as fourth class, first will be girl + students, then boys then boy+ then girls.

What on Earth has it got to do with safeguarding? Genuine question Confused

QuintanaRoo · 17/03/2023 12:04

As long as they do the same for Father’s Day then I think fair enough. A lot of kids don’t have one or both parents.

ancientgran · 17/03/2023 12:01

So you think a 5 year old should just tell the teacher they aren't celebrating and refuse to do the class activity of making a card?

I lost my mum as a very young child-(2) but didn’t think the whole class should not do one for their mothers!

LittleFingerStrength · 17/03/2023 12:05

Bad things happen in life, people deal with loss all the time, this is one of many and isn't about the loss of a Mother it's about woke ideologies of identities and breaking family bonds like surrogogacy.

QuintanaRoo · 17/03/2023 12:06

And if your child is lucky enough to have both parents what a great opportunity to chat to them and explain not everyone else is as fortunate and we need to consider other people’s feelings.

Oh FFS.

WeAllHaveWings · 17/03/2023 12:06

No problem with this in primary school if they are making cards etc and it is to protect the feelings of those who don't have mums 🤷‍♀️

Agreed- All about woke ideologies and 190 genders.

I'm very happy that our school is "woke" to the pain of one my sons friends, whose mother died recently.

Good for you but you realise other children might not feel the same? My husband lost his father when he was 18 months, he isn't sensitive about it, my younger sibling lost their father when they were 7 and he was very upset when they did Father's Day at school just a few months after his dad was no longer with us.

QuintanaRoo · 17/03/2023 12:07

I don’t think it’s anything to do with woke ideology and I’m as GC as they come.

chineapplepunks · 17/03/2023 12:07

Did you not stop for one second to consider that some children don't have mothers?

PuttingDownRoots · 17/03/2023 12:08

At DDs school it was Mother or whoever has the mothering role in the household. So Dads were invited in a single parent household, grandmother if they lived with grandparents etc.

Kids deal with loss and grief all the time.
It’s part of life.

Shoefleur · 17/03/2023 12:08

Our mum died when we were little. Youngest sibling hadn’t even started primary and when he did, he remembers having to make Mother’s Day cards for a mum that didn’t exist. My heart breaks for that little boy and any others who have to have salt rubbed in the wound by doing similar. Mothers and Others sounds like a lovely idea but to be honest, a special person day is also fine by me. I would imagine that the school are just trying to be sensitive to children who don’t have a mother rather than it being anything to do with the gender debate. And that is the right thing.

BungleandGeorge · 17/03/2023 12:08

If you stop and think about it, it’s quite upsetting for the kids who don’t have a mum in their life to have to celebrate Mother’s Day. Is it fair to highlight it to the entire class? Many schools just don’t bother at all and then a lot of separated parents receive nothing. I think it’s a good compromise

QuintanaRoo · 17/03/2023 12:09

A primary school is far more likely to have kids affected by bereavement or divorce than a trans parent. But even if it means the kid of a trans parent is catered for so what? They didn’t choose to have a trans parent!
