I’ve been awake since 3 and can’t sleep. DS(4) is having surgery today. Just a routine tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and grommets. I’m not even that worried about the surgery itself, it’s just the anticipation!

I’m worrying about how we’ll even get him in! He’s a very anxious child (likely ASD) and there are going to be so many hurdles this morning just to get him there. Getting him out the door, his fear of heights (lovely hospital building is all glass and views etc.), getting him to co-operate enough that he can be anaesthetised… I honestly don’t know how we’re going to do it.

And there’s so much riding on this. He’s been so unwell for so long. He wakes up coughing and vomiting all night. He’s got terrible sleep apnoea. He has such low energy. He has faltering growth and an eating disorder (which whilst it’s own issue is definitely not helped by not being able to breathe when he swallows). I have so many hopes pinned on this making him a happier, healthier little boy and I can’t bear it.

Handhold OP. Recovery always takes a while I think.

Hope you e got lots of icecream at home for his recuperation

whataballbag · 17/03/2023 12:46

Hope you're now in recovery giving him a big cuddle for being so brave!

TJ17 · 17/03/2023 13:21

Try not to worry, they are always a lot longer than we think they will be and recovery can be an hour or so too. Not everywhere will let you into recovery either, so they may be waiting on a porter to bring him back up to the ward. All of this takes time.

Hopefully not too much longer now 🙏🏼

Having a bit of a hard time maintaining his sats so he’s snoozing on me with oxygen on.

Ah bless him (and you!), hope he recovers well x

Tessisme · 17/03/2023 13:33

Aw, I really feel for you. My 10yo DS is due to go for a colonoscopy and endoscopy (which has been postponed twice) to confirm Crohn's or ulcerative colitis and I'm dreading getting him to the hospital when the day comes. He has anxiety and OCD and even ordinary days are a challenge!

I'm sure all will be well for your little boyFlowers

Rainbowqueeen · 17/03/2023 19:42

Oh bless. He is with you now and that will help.

How's he getting on?

SpideysMummy · 17/03/2023 20:11

He managed to come off oxygen at about 6pm and has been maintaining sats in the low 90s in air. He’s staying overnight on the surgical ward with DH. He’s been really out of it all afternoon, very affected by the anaesthetic it seems! He’s managed to eat though so that’s a positive!

I came home to put DD to bed so I’m worrying a bit but he does seem to be improving thank goodness!

Bless him x Hope he's ok. My DD had to have surgery at 3 and it was so stressful the waiting. She also struggled to come around afterwards. Hopefully it'll really improve his quality of life once he's fully recovered.

SpideysMummy · 18/03/2023 06:47

He’s had a really bad night. On oxygen all night. I feel guilty for not being there.

His dad's with him, don't feel guilty.
Hopefully you've had a good sleep and you'll be strong to take over the day shift.
Hope he perks up today.

Rainbowqueeen · 18/03/2023 07:08

You’ve done the right thing by going home. You have another DC to consider and the break will leave you more refreshed for today when DS needs you.

Hope he has a good day

Sirzy · 18/03/2023 07:17

Don’t feel guilty. He is with his dad.

SATs drop during the night so don’t worry too much about him needing some oxygen when he had been struggling. Hopefully today things will stabilise - just a heads up a lot of hospitals want children to have a night off oxygen before discharge so they may keep him tonight too.

just coming on to say this about the oxygen and then wanting little ones to have a gift on the ward managing without it before discharge. They did in my youngest child’s case when they were a (younger ) baby

Hope today is a more settled day for him and you are ok OP

Whiskeypowers · 18/03/2023 10:10

Wanting them to have a night not a gift sorry

MeinKraft · 18/03/2023 10:16

I hope he improves quickly OP

SpideysMummy · 18/03/2023 13:28

They’ve let him come home. He’s miserable and really out of it (just kind of staring into the distance), and struggling to swallow (there is a lot of dribbling going on!) but he seems kind of ok.

Oh bless him. I hope he feels better very soon ❤️

xxreeldancerxx · 18/03/2023 15:36

Hopefully he recovers quickly. Unfortunately for my wee one, things got worse after a couple of days and that was even with oral morphine. Had exactly same procedures done although he was only 2 1/2 .... after a week or so things got much better. Good luck x

WeeOrcadian · 18/03/2023 16:08

Blankets and cuddles - best prescriptions available IMO

LividNC · 18/03/2023 16:25

Gosh. Such a stressful time for you. Glad he’s home.

houseofcardss · 18/03/2023 16:31

Bless him. Wishing him a speedy recovery 💐

boboshmobo · 18/03/2023 16:38

Hopefully he was first in .. my experience of children's day wards is watching the others go down and come back somewhat upset isn't great ..
My son has sn and I asked for him to go first for that's reason

stayathomegardener · 18/03/2023 17:50

Poor him and poor you.

Hopefully he will bounce back quickly.
