I’ve been awake since 3 and can’t sleep. DS(4) is having surgery today. Just a routine tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and grommets. I’m not even that worried about the surgery itself, it’s just the anticipation!

I’m worrying about how we’ll even get him in! He’s a very anxious child (likely ASD) and there are going to be so many hurdles this morning just to get him there. Getting him out the door, his fear of heights (lovely hospital building is all glass and views etc.), getting him to co-operate enough that he can be anaesthetised… I honestly don’t know how we’re going to do it.

And there’s so much riding on this. He’s been so unwell for so long. He wakes up coughing and vomiting all night. He’s got terrible sleep apnoea. He has such low energy. He has faltering growth and an eating disorder (which whilst it’s own issue is definitely not helped by not being able to breathe when he swallows). I have so many hopes pinned on this making him a happier, healthier little boy and I can’t bear it.

Aw, wee soul. Glad he's homeFlowers

Whiskeypowers · 18/03/2023 18:36

Being home and snuggled up will help immensely. At this age they are so little it can take a while to shrug off the big events their little bodies and heads have been through brave little souls
fingers crossed he’s much brighter tomorrow

Hopefully he was first in .. my experience of children's day wards is watching the others go down and come back somewhat upset isn't great ..
My son has sn and I asked for him to go first for that's reason

He was second so didn’t see the first come back before he went down, thankfully! Although TBF she was a baby and breastfeeding straight away so wasn’t nearly as distraught.

They did them in age order, although there was three of them all born in the same year, so he was just lucky to be born slightly later in the year! He would not have coped seeing other children in distress like that. The other two were up and about playing really quickly though, bless them!

He’s perked up a bit this afternoon, actually asked for food!! I’ll admit it was twisters and turkey dinosaurs, but given that he has ARFID and rarely even registers feeling hungry, it was a big deal. He has also managed to draw and play a little bit. DH has just put him to bed and was very unnerved by the lack of snoring!!

That’s sounding really promising OP. Hopefully a good nights sleep and he’ll be back to normal in the morning.

How is your little man's recovery going now OP?

SpideysMummy · 03/04/2023 19:23

@ENTnightmare He’s doing really well thank you! He’s like a different child! No more snoring, no waking at night, more energy, eating better, different voice, dry in the mornings (used to have to drink a lot overnight)… he’s a different child!

That's brilliant, the pain was all worth it! Hope his recovery continues well.

Random but pre-surgery did anyone have trouble getting their little ones to sleep? Despite being desperately tired my little lady gets a second wind before bed and can take ages to wind down to get to sleep. It's completely in an overtired way and it is EXHAUSTING!
