Just that - is it time to defund the BBC (Biased Broadcasting Corporation) and make it subscription only?

ITVx Ch4 and 5 already offer steaming with no ads for 3.99 per month, otherwise it’s is completed Free with ads, there is also a new channel called Freevee formerly IMDb Tv
BBC can’t be arsed to set up the infrastructure for a streaming service, why would they when they have millions of people willing to throw them 159 pa

The Iplayer was quite groundbreaking at the time and was, and still is, ad free.

If the BBC went subscription only then ITV/Channel 4 etc would follow suit though. You wouldn't be able to watch on TV channels without constant advert breaks either.

That's not to say BBC's model hasn't run its course but what will replace it will be worse.

Yeah Netflix is doing absolutely horrendous 🙄
And I really really miss 15mins of adverts every hour…can’t stand binge watching with no ads.

My ad free Netflix is £15.99/per month because I pay to have ability to run on 4 devices at once. Necessary with 2 Uni students as part of my household. That’s £60/Yr more than BBC. I just like the Netflix shows more than the BBC ones.

? I used to watch BBC iplayer back when it was a loophole way to watch BBC without paying for the TV licence. So they have a streaming service. Have for at least a decade.

Netflix isn't a TV channel.

That's up to you, personally I can't be arsed watching anything with adverts in which is why BBC is the only TV channel i'll watch.

A subscription service -you know ? Like Netflix et al……where you give them your details, and a payment method

TwoMonthsOff · 14/03/2023 21:52

and where you can dip in and out as you please …..

I take it that’s irony.

Yes.
Totally outdated institution. Abolish or let it live or die on subscriptions.
The entitled staff unlike to survive in a properly run business - too bad -they can get jobs at the Guardian instead till that folds too.

Only subscription for any new BBC stuff

everything up until now is paid for by the British public and should be left 100% accessible to the nation that paid for them!!

You can start and stop.

You can choose pay by monthly direct debit. The system has you pay 1yr in 6 mos though so you are always paid 6mos forward from that point on.

BUT if you stop needing it, they will refund you the 6 mos of prepayments back to you from the date you tell them you stopped using it.

The same if you pay annually up front, if you decide say 8mos later you don’t need it, they will refund you 4mos worth back.

I was being sarcastic. No ads on Netflix unless you agree to pay a much cheaper monthly fee to have it with ads.

How do you think the BBC News website (the most read in the world) is funded?

It's still not worth £154 per year....

TwoMonthsOff · 15/03/2023 17:46

@Onnabugeisha
yes fair enough, but it is a broadcaster - with a streaming service, rather than a subscription service and Netflix etc don’t send relentless threatening letters if you choose not to pay for them.
But as I have said before it suits some, others not, I am happy we still have a choice

Florenz · 15/03/2023 18:23

it will slowly die out anyway. Most of the young people where I work dont have TV licenses and literally never watch the BBC.

That's very true.

But they still exploit and criminalise (mainly) women who admit to watching TV without a licence. 25% of criminal convictions for women are for non-payment of bbc licence fee! Usually non-native speakers of English/refugees/vulnerable in other ways and so don't understand what to say or not say.

Blossomtoes · 13/03/2023 13:51

Except nobody’s forcing you to pay anything. Don’t watch and don’t pay. Easy.

Nope. If you have a television in your house, you have to pay the BBC, even if you never watch the BBC.

If you don't, you are liable for criminal prosecution.
It is worrying that people don't know this simple fact.

MrsJamesofSutton · 15/03/2023 19:36

If you are partially or fully blind, they will give you a discount, Very generous of them.

You do know that you can watch TV on devices other than a television set? Plenty of people don’t have a licence and don’t watch live TV. It’s worrying that people don't know this simple fact.

MrsJamesofSutton · 15/03/2023 19:41

Onnabugeisha · 14/03/2023 17:35

Yes, but who needs live TV? It is far inferior to just streaming a show on demand.

You can watch catch up/on demand on all TV services except BBC iplayer though.

You can watch BBC news videos

So the TV license is literally a live TV & BBC iplayer subscription.

If you are watching I on BBCiplayer without a licence, you are leaving yourself open to prosecution.

You are not allowed to watch iplayer without a licence.

TwoMonthsOff · 15/03/2023 19:41

@Blossomtoes
good grief ! does someone @MrsJamesofSutton actually think that’s true ?🤯

yes that is correct but actually owning a TV set does not make you liable for prosecution
