Just that - is it time to defund the BBC (Biased Broadcasting Corporation) and make it subscription only?

It isn't a BBC subscription.

Without it, you can't watch any live TV at all, not just BBC. You can't watch TV on any TV service. You can't record TV either.

That's anything, even foreign services, not just BBC.

Irritating.

Yes, but who needs live TV? It is far inferior to just streaming a show on demand.

You can watch catch up/on demand on all TV services except BBC iplayer though.

You can watch BBC news videos

So the TV license is literally a live TV & BBC iplayer subscription.

GL isn't a marmite figure. Well, he might be with Tory MPs but generally he was an incredibly successful/very talented/well liked footballer and is a superb presenter.
He's smart and knowledgeable and very difficult to replace IMO.

GL smart and knowledgable? Get a life!

May as well just give the money to GB News instead and let Bruce, Kuenssberg, Sharp, Gibb et al all under the one Tory channel.

I know there are people who think the BBC is to the right

And probably as many who think they’re too left

But if it goes I’d say our media landscape overall would shift right

The people who think the BBC are too left are the types that think anyone to the left of Farage is a socialist and the entire media should be a right wing echo chamber at all times.

@Nomorefees Mr Lineker has earned well over a million pounds a year, for years. You discuss.

He could earn more at Sky.

Would you get rid of it though? It’s usually those on the right who would like to see it go

How would that help the left? You’d have The Guardian up against the DM etc it wouldn’t compete.

Would you prefer no BBC at all? I thinks it’s madness to do that especially if you are on the left, but maybe you would

You are of course totally wrong. The BBC is full of guardian toting left-wing types who are stuck in their own morass and don’t even realise their own bias.

YetAnotherUser · 14/03/2023 18:43

If you want to defend the BBC, stop paying the license fee and don't use their services.

It's not compulsory FFS.

The top tier of management is unremittingly Tory. They’re supposedly the ones with the power.

But what use are they in terms of political balance? They've cowed to the Tories for the last 13 years. I bet when Labour get in they'll start actually scrutinising the government again.

A stronger BBC would have kept at lease some of the Tories blatant corruption in check. Brexit as well, it was the BBC that made Farage a star.

I think the Tories would be happier to get rid of the BBC than Labour

Yeah because their donors would get richer and it frees up space for more GB News channels with a right wing echo chamber.

The BBC has still massively let the country down by consistently cowing to the Tories and almost never holding them to account.

Most mainstream media is in the hands of the right because oligarchs will fund them and use them to promote their own interests. Whether it's Murdoch, Rothermere, the Barclay brothers or whatever shadowy hedge-fund owners fund GB News.

The BBC model may well be old hat now and ready to be put out to pasture but the alternative is more right wing news channels run by the 1%.

TwoMonthsOff · 14/03/2023 20:01

@NowThatsWhatICall22
yes indeed, commercial channels are running a business and striving to make profits from advertising, sponsorships and the sales of their output, the BBC are coining BILLIONS from the public purse, easy money

Agree it’s time for it to be a subscription service. All the people who think it’s marvellous and excellent value for money will be happy to pay, and those who don’t want it won’t be forced to subsidise them any more.

Exactly this. However, I expect the people grandly saying how wonderful the service is won’t be so smug if their service suddenly becomes an awful lot more expensive because so many people don’t bother to subscribe 😆 😆

User135644 · 14/03/2023 21:25

TwoMonthsOff · 14/03/2023 20:04

Quite

If the BBC went subscription only then ITV/Channel 4 etc would follow suit though. You wouldn't be able to watch on TV channels without constant advert breaks either.

That's not to say BBC's model hasn't run its course but what will replace it will be worse.

Not to mention all the advert breaks that would make everything unwatchable.

Florenz · 14/03/2023 21:29

Just get rid of it. It's not relevant anymore. Just turn the lights off and shut it all down and let other content providers fill in the gaps. The Guardian could start their own news channel, for instance.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 14/03/2023 21:34

No. It's a frickin' bargain. Apart from football, I'd happily lose that but you can't have everything

ITVx Ch4 and 5 already offer steaming with no ads for 3.99 per month, otherwise it’s is completed Free with ads, there is also a new channel called Freevee formerly IMDb Tv
BBC can’t be arsed to set up the infrastructure for a streaming service, why would they when they have millions of people willing to throw them 159 pa

Becoming more like America isn't helpful though, just leaving everyone to their echo chambers. Guardian would be like CNN to GB News or Talk TV's Fox News.

It's a shame the BBC have lost so much trust but the Tories destroy everything they touch. The BBC is ultimately in control of the state.

I think they’re struggling as it is tbh
