It’s hardly poaching, they aren’t coming over with a big net and catching them. If people choose to leave because the they would have better pay and lifestyles than in the UK they should. The government needs to ensure Britain is a good place to live so people won’t want to leave.

Agree. Problem is the tories don't care if state schools have severe shortages of teachers. It won't affect the private schools that Rishi uses for example, as they are able to offer much better packages than state schools.

MintyCedric · 13/03/2023 11:42

If the Tories get back in next year I’ll be throwing myself in their net!

Mamansparkles · 13/03/2023 09:55

How is this any different to what the UK does? We recruit doctors and nurses from overseas, in fact I don't believe we actually even train enough ourselves so our entire medical system relies on us 'poaching' from other countries.

Totally agree with @Mamansparkles - this is our chickens coming home to roost. We've asset stripped health staff from other countries (who've paid for their training), now we've decided we don't want them of course we've got shortages.

Tekkentime · 13/03/2023 11:53

It's not just healthcare jobs, it's also finance jobs.
UK wages are a pittance, houses are smaller and crammed together, and finding things to do for 6 months a year is hard.

QuintanaRoo · 13/03/2023 11:58

And we do the same to countries like the Philippines and Nigeria, leaving them with fewer health care staff than they could/should have.

the80sweregreat · 13/03/2023 12:03

A few friends of mine have children moving everywhere at the moment. It is sad that they don't see a future here.

How old are the children?

Shininghope · 13/03/2023 12:06

I’m one of the nurses being “poached” I’ve worked for the NHS for 20 years but sadly can’t see a future here. My partner, a nurse with 15 years experience will be coming with me also.

LikeGolddust · 13/03/2023 12:06

The UK has benefited enormously from NZ and Australian trained nurses and Drs and all manner of other professions. It swings both ways.

BlueMediterranean · 13/03/2023 12:07

Lots of teachers are already leaving the country or changing careers.

We were 20 in my PGCE and only 1 person is still teaching in a state school in England.

MelchiorsMistress · 13/03/2023 12:08

The UK has the option to make it more attractive to stay here if it wants to, and it’s not as if the British haven’t done the same to other countries.

Good luck to all the people that know their worth and choose a better standard of living elsewhere.

GrasstrackGirl · 13/03/2023 12:10

DH is currently being headhunted by an Australian organisation, we are considering it.

PeekAtYou · 13/03/2023 12:11

Poaching suggests stealing which is not the case here. Workers should pick the jobs and countries that work best for them. If that's overseas then good luck to them. I went overseas for a few years and it helped my cv and we had a great quality of life there.

Considering our long history of depending on foreign workers, it is completely hypocritical to criticize this campaign.

the80sweregreat · 13/03/2023 12:12

The children are in their early 20s.
I know of two families whose kids have moved , or will be soon , to work abroad
A few others I know are just traveling , but they will come back I suppose.

TomeTome · 13/03/2023 12:13

To be fair we seem to have quite a lot of Aussie and south African dentists here.

Goawaypeppa · 13/03/2023 12:19

My son finishes his police degree apprenticeship next year.

Then he will be off as soon as he can to live add work in Australia. As will quite a few of the people on his course.

He always wanted to be a police officer, but one of the things that made it more attractive to him was that it made it easy to leave the UK. I can’t blame him one bit.

CanOfPop · 13/03/2023 12:20

People are acting sensibly if they move there.
Shit up the country and many of those with choices will leave.

Oigetoffmylawn · 13/03/2023 12:30

My doctor friend has just left with his family for New Zealand. I'm so sad, but really can't blame them. It's a much better valued profession over there.

Meandfour · 13/03/2023 12:33

this isn’t “new” my cousin is a MH nurse and left in the early 2000s for Perth.

Embelline · 13/03/2023 12:34

I wish self employed writers and social media managers were needed in Australia - I’d be off in a heartbeat!

RockGirl · 13/03/2023 12:34

I have teacher friends out there. It's taken them a long time to be able to buy a property. They cannot afford to come home and visit because even though they earn more than UK teachers, the cost of living is very high.

They are actually worse off financially, but living style is different and they like it.

Fifi0000 · 13/03/2023 12:37

The thing is the public don't respect HCPs and other professions in the UK. Someone suggested on MN on turning into to some kind of indentured servitude where they can't leave , they will never ever train up enough staff if people have this attitude. These are some of the most needed professions they literally keep people alive and healthy.

Fifi0000 · 13/03/2023 12:38

Oh in the US people go into nursing for the money and job stability. UK nurses would never say that the job just isn't respected over here.

MissyB1 · 13/03/2023 12:42

And good luck to them, public sector workers are treated like shit here, why wouldn’t they go?

MarshaBradyo · 13/03/2023 12:44

It’d be interesting to see the break down by country for those who apply for healthcare visas here.

In the 70s there were paid for flights to Aus for some professions, eg Drs so not new to entice
