It’s hardly poaching, they aren’t coming over with a big net and catching them. If people choose to leave because the they would have better pay and lifestyles than in the UK they should. The government needs to ensure Britain is a good place to live so people won’t want to leave.

Was reading something similar the other day. I’m a teacher and my sisters are a police officer and nurse - we’re thinking of all moving out there!

Yes - it's nice to see that other countries value those professions and reward them financially.

On the junior doctor thread someone suggested that if they don't like it, they should leave. I don't blame them if they do.

Society here needs to stop treating these professions as indentured slaves, and cop on.

How is this any different to what the UK does? We recruit doctors and nurses from overseas, in fact I don't believe we actually even train enough ourselves so our entire medical system relies on us 'poaching' from other countries.

exactly, we rely on "poaching" from poorer countries, and we are going to lose out to countries that offer better terms and conditions.

Exactly.

Those will be the ones complaining the loudest though when they wait weeks to see a Dr or years on a waiting list for treatment.

This has been going on for donkeys and, because of the measly public sector salary increases, I am sorely tempted.

I left the NHS after 16 years to work privately. I earn £15000 more than my NHS colleagues, I am less stressed, have a better work life balance, and can put the needs of my patients first. I get monthly invitations to work in Australia but I haven't left the UK because I am happy.

My DD goes to Aus end of the month, been in the NHS just over a year, i'm dreading it! but pleased for her too, she loves her job but the NHS less so.

this is how the NHS treat staff.....

She had 2 bouts of CV, both very mild, told to stay home for 5 days each, then got flu after being put with a flu/covid patient for 2 days and no suitable ppe... 2 weeks off, these are her only times off.

Returned to work, put on their sickness policy (stage 1) for "excessive amount of time off" & " will be monitored for next 6 months"

No surprise they leave.

We do the same from other nations. My local hospital wouldn't function if the Philippines and Portugal didn't churn out staff to fill it!

i don't blame those who choose to leave. It seems the UK is really going downhill very, very fast. I was reading an article in my local newspaper in Sweden today about a village called Jaywick and about their problems with cost of living, brexit, poverty, food banks, drugs etc. An old man who only had state pension had to pawn his TV for £15 so he could afford to heat his room for a couple of days. I watched a TikTok the other day from a British guy working in a bar in Australia. His basic hourly rate was something like AUD$30 (£16). Working evenings and weekends commanded a higher rate, often double time.

Even with the higher cost of living, the better wages and lifestyle is a massive temptation to many.

Even looking at police wages, in Victoria the starting salary is equivalent of £41,000 compared to £26,680 in Hertfordshire, for example.

I nearly moved there 20 years ago, but just couldn't face being so far away from my family. I do often have "what if" moments!

Poaching is stealing fish or deer on someone else's land. The Australians are offering opportunities and it's up to individuals to make their own decisions whether to pursue the opportunity or not. It's a big move, so if a lot of people are taking up the offer it's probably because their lives will be significantly better over there. If pay and conditions improved in the UK far fewer would be tempted to emigrate.
