Sleeping in your birthday suit

Am in bed in pyjamas plus dressing gown freezing under the duvet and I wonder how did the habit of sleeping naked start? Do people do it in summer only but also in winter? Surely it wasn’t a thing years ago when bedrooms were not warmed and it was freezing indoors.

Also how do people ever get out of a warm bed naked or do they get changed under the covers first?

Those who sleep naked and have young DC, do you not worry about said DC bursting in just as you're getting into/out of bed?

Never felt the need to hide my body in clothes from my DC.

blebbleb · 14/03/2023 13:41

I'm definitely more of an uptight person but I used to hate it when I saw my parents nude. The images have burned into my soul Confused

I meant while you're naked...

Moredarkchocolateplease · 14/03/2023 13:47

I know! My children have always seen me naked! They are teens now so a bit more repulsed!

But I have never felt the need to remain dressed around them. Don't your children come in for cuddles?

Really once they are old enough to 'burst in' then they are old enough to understand you might be naked?

xogossipgirlxo · 14/03/2023 13:47

I don't like sleeping naked, because I go pee during the night and it just seems weird, like I'm marking bedsheet 😂It's easier to change pyjamas often than bedding (all this fuss of laundry, drying etc., couldn't do it twice a week, for a example, whilst it's 1 minute job with pyjamas). My husband claims he will never sleep naked as our cats try to sniff his private parts 😬So yeah, naked post sex nap is enough for us when it comes to this topic 😂

I'd stop coming into your bedroom if you were naked as a teenager if I was repulsed

What is the issue with children seeing naked bodies .

blebbleb · 14/03/2023 17:10

@Floralnomad I don't see an issue but I personally found my parents wobbly bits quite off putting when they were happy to walk around the house nude when I was a child. So I wouldn't walk around completely naked in front my own children. Each to their own.

countrypunk · 14/03/2023 17:13

If you're sleeping next to a partner, it's much better to sleep naked because you each heat the other up with your skin/body heat! Plus it's just nice for snuggling.

I put pyjamas and dressing gown on as soon as I get up at the weekends, but during the week it's straight into the shower.

@hamsterchump

Donald Duck🐥 🤣🤣
I wish I hadn’t read that… my DP is a “Donald” and I can’t unsee it now!!

But that’s what it’s called, “Donald ducking it”

What is Donald Ducking?

Walking around in just a shirt
Donald Ducking is the act of going about your day in nothing but a shirt. This slang term originates from Disney cartoon character Donald Duck's penchant for wearing a shirt, a hat, and nothing else.

Typically, people Donald Duck only in the privacy of their own home (and are embarrassed if caught Donald Ducking). During the covid pandemic, some WFH workers began Donald Ducking more frequently, after figuring out that no one could see their bottom half during Zoom meetings.

quote unquote 😄

Season0fTheWitch · 14/03/2023 17:27

We've slept naked for years, when we had DD I started to wear a t shirt to sleep in and Dh wears pj bottoms. We have the heating on all the time so it's not a warmth issue

TorviShieldMaiden · 14/03/2023 19:36

I’ve made it clear to my kids that it’s my bed, in my bedroom so I’m naked. If they are repulsed by my body they shouldn’t barge in 😂

They didn’t care when they were little, only now they are teens and tweens.

rubesxx · 14/03/2023 19:39

Am I the only one who can't sleep starkers cos my stubbly legs brushing against each other really irritates me?! 😂😂

I don't have kids myself, that's partly why I have no frame of reference re this...

I can't speak for anyone else, but personally as a child I absolutely hated it if I happened to see my parents naked.

I’m not sure I loved seeing my mum naked either. But it did me no harm. Living together sometimes means small discomforts. Also I don’t flaunt myself naked in front of them. I am naked in my bedroom and the bathroom. Which is perfectly acceptable. If they want to come into those spaces (especially without knocking!) they know they might find me naked. I couldn’t have a poo for 5 years on my own as they insisted on coming with me, so seeing an unclothed boob seems like nothing 😁

The British are weird about nudity. In Germany or Scandinavia people are naked a lot more at home and in communal spaces like swimming changing areas etc. and there is no discomfort. It’s just accepted that these are naked bodies.

StarlightLady · 15/03/2023 09:36

I'm in my 40s and have slept naked since I was about 14, with very few exceptions such as sharing a bed with a friend in a non-sexual way.

For me, wearing stuff in bed just gets in the way. The duvet retains the heat.

QuinionsRainbow · 17/03/2023 20:26

Naked all year round here. It's what co-sleeping adults tend to do, and it encourages the emotional bond. Nothing nicer than drifting off to sleep in a warm, welcoming skin-to-skin contact situation, and waking up the same way. Showers before bedtime make it even more attractive.

Practically, although we have a 4-seasons duvet set, we generally manage to get through the winter with just the 4.5 tog component, and our windows are usually open at least a crack. Just lately, we;ve been converting from poly-cotton to pure cotton bedlinen, which is quite refreshing, even if it isn't 800-thread stuff!

But given the apparent preponderance of nude sleepers here, when did we all start? My own introduction to sleeping au naturelle came from my parents during the summer of '76, hen I was about 10 (you do the math) and DH had been a similar heatwave stripper a few years earlier. And as for DCs - with two nude-sleeping parents to contend with, and no night attire house-rules once reliably dry at night, none of them ever really showed any interest in PJs!

JaffavsCookie · 17/03/2023 20:35

Naked all year round here too, no heating, bedroom window open. Really chilly mornings i might drag some clothes under the covers and put them on before exiting the duvet

Abracadabra12345 · 17/03/2023 20:42

I have so many sets of pyjamas, I adore them and I love sleeping in them. As another pp said, it’s much quicker to wash pjs regularly than bedding and you then have to make the bed. I keep thinking of all those skin cells and sweat being rubbed off into the bed...I prefer to keep them inside my pjs and wash them 😀

Bananaman123 · 17/03/2023 20:47

I sleep naked every night regardless of weather. I cannot stand getting tied up in pjs, I move around a lot when I’m sleeping.

I have a fan on during summer and sometimes during winter. My home does get cold but if it’s really cold I’ll put an electric fan heater on for 10 mins to warm the room before bed.

JockTamsonsBairns · 17/03/2023 21:00

When I first moved in with (now) DH, we both slept naked. I was slim and sexy back then 😂 and we cuddled close to keep warm in the colder months.

Fast forward 30 years, I'm fat and 50 - I wear a t-shirt and pants to bed, with my electric blanket and a 13 Tog quilt.
DH has his own room, still sleeps naked, with a lightweight quilt and some sort of newfangled gel-topped mattress.
He likes being cool in bed, I like being toasty.
And the thought of cuddling in close in bed nowadays?? No thanks 😂

FannythePinkFlamingo · 17/03/2023 21:36

We both always sleep naked. I hate getting tangled up in clothes when I sleep. I've also got my menopausal furnace going to keep me warm!

Whichnumbers · 18/03/2023 06:18

JockTamsonsBairns It’s really sad you equate thin means sexy but larger doesn’t equal sexy. Society has brainwashed you
