Sleeping in your birthday suit

Am in bed in pyjamas plus dressing gown freezing under the duvet and I wonder how did the habit of sleeping naked start? Do people do it in summer only but also in winter? Surely it wasn’t a thing years ago when bedrooms were not warmed and it was freezing indoors.

Also how do people ever get out of a warm bed naked or do they get changed under the covers first?

Naked with thick thick duvet and a hot water bottle. I love getting in the cold bed and folding myself in like a cocoon.

I don't like sleeping totally starkers but I'm a vest and knickers fan. Pjs aren't for me. I put them on when I get up. Also don't like dressing gowns.

DH is a pyjama fan, they do make me feel a bit like he should be in a c and a catalogue.

My husband only sleeps naked, I only sleep clothed! Neither of us understands the other when it comes to this, I just can't fathom the idea of being naked, I find it so uncomfortable and I can't sleep for feeling self conscious, nothing at all to do with whatever temperature the room might be. I'm on constant alert about whatever incredibly unflattering angle I might be in if he were to wake up and see me!

Whichnumbers · 13/03/2023 23:42

I sleep in my birthday suit, duvet, blanket & most often the window open. It’s very rare I sleep in my pjs

HoleyShit · 14/03/2023 00:17

Husband is a naked sleeper. I can't as I just sweat too much (lovely!) so I wear pj bottoms and a vest top

Arapawa · 14/03/2023 00:56

I sleep in a cotton nightie most of the time. Naked sometimes. My husband (of 30 years) sleeps naked all the time. Camping in a tent in freezing temperatures when we first met (Canada) and nowadays here where we sleep with the window open all year round, He had to go in to hospital about 20 years ago rather suddenly and he didn't have pyjamas! He had to wear hospital issue until I got to M & S.

Same here. Plus my breasts are too big. I wear a soft cotton"leisure bra" and pants. My "sleep bikini."

Most men seem to sleep naked that I've known. A few females too, I guess you just get used to it and it's warm once you're in bed

Floralnomad · 14/03/2023 01:11

I sleep naked all year , husband wears a pair of boxers all year . We live in a warm house , at the moment I’m not even under the covers .

LifeunderMarrs · 14/03/2023 02:19

We're in the South East and have slept naked for over a decade.

It depends hugely on where you live though because of the difference in temperatures. Two decades ago the winters were so much colder - we both slept in pyjamas and the heating came on half an hour before we got up.

It's so much milder now - it's scary really...

Beezknees · 14/03/2023 05:25

I sleep naked (I don't have a partner). I live in the midlands so not particularly warm, but my flat is extremely well insulated (purpose built and modern, on the second floor so it contains the heat) so it's always plenty warm enough, plus I set the thermostat to be at 20 degrees when I get up. I could walk around the flat naked at any time of year and be warm enough. Last night I was warm enough to kick the covers off!

CeriB82 · 14/03/2023 06:44

never naked. Vest top and shorts. Through the year

itsgettingweird · 14/03/2023 06:56

I sleep in lounge pants and bralet top in winter.

Shorts and top or nothing in summer.

I have a throw over fluffy gown that stays by my bed for middle of the night loo trips!

I also have an electric blanket so during winter I'll use that too if I'm cold.

I hate being hot in bed but also hate not being covered by something - hence why it's as little clothes as needed!

MrsMontyD · 14/03/2023 06:57

I always wear PJs, I don't like my legs touching each other in bed without PJ bottoms on.

DP would prefer to sleep naked but wears shorts or PJ bottoms in case he bumps into DD on the landing in the night (not his DD).

BarbedButterfly · 14/03/2023 06:59

I sleep naked all year round. I can't cope with the feeling of being in bed with clothes on and getting tangled up etc. Plus my OH is always boiling hot so keeps me warm.

I put my dressing gown on when getting up which is warm enough.

I can't stand being too hot in bed, I'd rather be cold for 5 minutes until the duvet and sheets warm up than wake up in the middle of the night sweating. During last summer when we had the really hot days and nights I bought one of those pet cooking mats and slipped it under the sheet on my side to keep myself cool 😀

As someone who can only sleep properly in freezing temperatures (yes, naked, with the window open throughout winter), the cooling mat tip might be the most useful thing I've ever read on MN.

BMW6 · 14/03/2023 09:01

I'm another naked sleeper, and for the last few years only use a summer duvet all year (used to change to a higher tog for winter).

That's post menopause for you.

blebbleb · 14/03/2023 09:39

@MrsMontyD I'm the same, I hate my legs touching at night. Big baggy pjs for me!

blebbleb · 14/03/2023 09:39

Also, don't the covers whiff a bit quicker if you're bits aren't covered?

I don’t put the duvet between my legs or arse crack so it’s fine 😁

How bad do your bits smell?

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 14/03/2023 10:13

Why did this make me lol?

My bits dont whiff.

bringincrazyback · 14/03/2023 13:16

Those who sleep naked and have young DC, do you not worry about said DC bursting in just as you're getting into/out of bed?

VoluptuaGoodshag · 14/03/2023 13:19

I used to always sleep naked, even in the depths of winter (in Scotland) but then I started feeling the cold more so needed a cotton t shirt. Then turned menopausal and needed a high wicking garment coz the hot flushes make me sweat so much my cotton t shirt was wringing. I miss the good old days of being naked under a pile of duvets
