My lovely Mum 😭

I'm sick to my stomach with fear.
My mum recently found a painful lump/swelling in her armpit and has been having spells of her breast being red and hot to the touch. She went for her annual mammogram and has been called for further tests.

I just know in my heart it's inflammatory breast cancer and I am heartbroken.

I can't lose my Mum 😭😭

You're amazing, everyone. The warmth and solidarity of experience given by this thread. Also, your love for your mum shines through, OP. Love and hope

WinterMusings · 12/03/2023 00:35

@Sofiabella

I'm sorry you're so scared, it's horrible.

but try to really listen to what people are saying,

  • pain like your mums is most often cysts & things like that.
  • the survival rate for BC, is really high.

best wishes 💐

Hi everyone, OP here. Just popping back to update because you were all so amazing and talked me back from despair the other day.
So my mum had her appointment today, she had ultrasound, mammograms and a biopsy and has had a metal clip attached in case they need to find it again as the lump moved which they said was positive. She gets her results in a few weeks but the consultant told her he feels pretty confident it's breast lesions and not breast cancer which would explain the pain etc so I feel I can breathe slightly easier.

Could it be mastitis? I've had that and it was incredibly painful.

My heart is with you @Sofiabella. My mum has had breast cancer twice. It's not been easy, but she has recovered well. There's lots that they can do these days. My mum always said that it wasn't the BC she feared but other people's pity. I hope that you get the results that you hope for.

Sending you love and strength. x

I've been thinking about your mum. Glad she's getting a good treatment plan.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 14/03/2023 12:54

That's good news op. How do breast lesions occur?

Eatentoomanyroses · 14/03/2023 12:55

Was at the breast clinic a week ago and the dr said they’re not normally worried by pain. It could be a lot of things that aren’t cancer.

NeonHalo · 14/03/2023 13:20

Wonderful update OP ❤️

Generally, pain is a good thing as tumours are usually painless which is why they are hard to find.

here’s hoping it’s an infection or a cyst.

I just wanted to say that this isn't true. My tumour was painful and it was because it was painful that I wasn't particularly worried but it was actually malignant. I'm here to tell the tale but I'd hate for anybody to presume
that pain is necessarily a good sign. It's a timely reminder that ANY changes to your breasts should be investigated.

OP, I hope that your our mum has good news!

slowquickstep · 14/03/2023 14:06

Enjoy Mothers day with your lovely mum x

Which is why I said it’s generally true. Not always.

But you’re right any changes, painless or not should always be checked, because as you know there are always exceptions.

Hi all. My mum had her appointment today and it is breast cancer. Feels surreal to type that. They said they are very optimistic and feel it is stage one.
Next stage is an MRI before a treatment plan is put together.
Just wanted to update as you've all been amazing.

When I read that my stomach actually fell, I'm sorry it's hard news to take for you all. My DIL (38) was diagnosed 2 weeks ago..had all the same tests as your Mum..she's now waiting for the final full diagnosis and treatment plan. They are hopeful, like your mum as it's been caught early.
She has good days and bad days..sometimes overwhelmed with shock and grief and other times not so much. It's hard waiting for the treatment plan although they are talking lumpectomy and chemo. at the moment. It's all being fast tracked which is good.
Best wishes to you all.

So sorry to read this - just wanted to give you a positive story, I was diagnosed with T3N0 triple negative B/cancer at the end of August. Had 12 weeks of chemo, a mastectomy, another op unrelated to the cancer and will be having radiotherapy at the end of April and chemo tablets after that as prevention as the cancer was all taken away in the op.
I know you and your mum will be feeling completely overwhelmed right, but she'll get seen quickly, once the plans in place, it begins, the care I have had has been amazing. A top tip is to write down and questions you have, no matter how silly you think they are and if you're going with her to the appointments, ask them - infact, make sure someone goes with her, because I sat and listened to what they said and couldn't remember half of it, my husband did thankfully.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/03/2023 18:38

Stage one is "good" that they caught it so early so I have every confidence your lovely mum will be ok. Xx

Sofiabella · 25/03/2023 14:08

My mums doing amazingly, keeping strong.
She has to have a CT scan and an MRI which is another thing to worry about now, I don't understand why if the consultant has already said it's stage one? Does anybody know?

When I had my MRI, I'm just relaying what they told me so I don't know if this is exactly right , it was to establish the exact size and position of it, as obviously it's more accurate than the measurement of the scans. I had to have a CT scan to stage it properly, at my hospital they don't use the only style staging, mine was T3N0 (tumour and nodes) and to see if it had spread anywhere else ( it hadn't)

They just need to be certain so they can give her the right treatment. Try not to worry, although I know that's a stupid thing to say!

Sorry to hear this, it's terrifying when a parent shows the first sign that they really are human and not the Immortal Gods of our childhood, I know. It is early days, so much much more reason to hope than despair 🌹

Tell us about your mum....

SacreBleeurgh · 25/03/2023 18:50

Hi OP, sorry to hear about your mum, Without knowing all the details, it’s possible that the reason for CT scan will be to ensure the cancer has not spread, and the MRI could be a couple of things - it’s likely to be a breast MRI if they think it’s a lobular cancer, to see how extensive the cancer is, and allow them to decide on surgery. Alternatively if they are considering neoadjunvant chemotherapy, then it will be to allow them to monitor response by doing repeat imaging throughout treatment - usually beginning, middle, and sometimes end depending on mid-treatment response.
