Help me spend £70 on teacher’s Easter present

Class Rep here. One of my jobs is to buy the teacher a present from the class kitty on behalf of the parents at the end of each term. I would like to choose something Springlike but I’m cr*p at choosing presents, so would welcome suggestions from Mumsnetters. The budget is £70. It doesn’t have to be just one item, but a maximum of three. Thanks so much ☺️

I had a teacher about 20 years ago who told us out straight that if the group were ever getting her a gift she wanted stuff from clarins 😂

Summerfun54321 · 09/03/2023 23:48

Easter teacher presents isn't a thing. It just isn't.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 10/03/2023 00:08

Easter gifts aren't generally a thing at state schools here, but they are at the OPs school. Why do some people feel the need to say things like give the money that families have given for a gift (only a few quid each) to charity?
Also the people who say that a teacher would rather have glue sticks etc. - I've never heard anyone saying they'd rather the parents had bought glue sticks for the class than the £100 JL voucher they got at the end of the year!

If I was still teaching, I'm not now, I would've expected, and advocated, any type of gift at that amount would go to a charity. I was a teacher in adult education though.

shinyshoes5566 · 10/03/2023 00:49

Make the teacher a lovely card from all their pupils, then donate the money to a Foodbank or local children's charity. Failing that, give it to the school to fund pupils on trips who can't afford to pay. That will make the teacher far happier than flowers / chocolate / wine / mugs etc. Teachers care about children, not house-filling tat.

Easter present?
Please stop the utter madness - its completely unneccessary
Spend it on Easter Eggs for the food bank

The food bank doesnt want Easter eggs
They want tinned meat

They have lots of people who give an egg or a section box at Christmas and they end up just being wasted.

DarkNecessities · 10/03/2023 06:15

I can’t believe teachers get Easter presents now. A present every term

Augend23 · 10/03/2023 06:25

I agree with whoever said £50 of vouchers and the rest on some sort of decent egg and some spring flowers.

Fairyliz · 10/03/2023 06:31

If you spend that much on the teacher shouldn’t they be declaring it to the tax office and paying tax on it?
Surely better to donate it to charity in the teachers name.

Doingmybest12 · 10/03/2023 06:35

The thought to come to my mind is a light perfume . However you'll need to be careful as I am someone who really struggles with perfume as it makes me feel sick. But if they like it it seems like a nice treat.

ThePowerOfThree3 · 10/03/2023 07:00

A hotel chocolat velvetiser - they’re about £90/£100 but often have discounts to bring the price down. I absolutely love mine and she’ll think of the class that got it for her every time she’s used it. & it’s chocolat so a bit Eastery!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 10/03/2023 07:14

Surely the school has a policy on accepting gifts. Over £10 in my area of work the gift is declined. If it is a state school they are employed by the local authority so should follow their policy. A small box of chocolates acceptable but £70 is quite a lot.

Almahart · 10/03/2023 07:14

My kids were at state primary school in a wealthy area and we would do class collections at Christmas and the end of the year. I usually contributed but it didn't really sit right with me when we would collect £180 odd. It would be divided between teacher and TA but still,, it's a hell of a lot of money.

I remember one year the class rep bought a bag that wasn't a good fit (think fussy purple leather handbag for a cycling tote carrying 25 year old). What a waste of money.

Before anyone asks, yes I was a PTA rep (for two years), and no I didn't say anything about the bag because I was grateful that someone else was taking it on.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 10/03/2023 07:16

I agrée with the parents saying give the teacher something homemade and then donate to classroom.

Nowhereelsetogo90 · 10/03/2023 07:18

Where are you? Any jobs going?!

In all seriousness, as a teacher, I’d find this awkward! It’s a lot of money for a non-event! A box of sweeties at the end of the year with a nicely written card is plenty!

ibuymeownflowers · 09/03/2023 20:52

At the end of each term? Don't be so ridiculous.

Buy a £3 egg and donate the rest to a foodbank you've all got money to burn!!

Money to burn? If there is 30 children in the class it’s not even £2.50 each :/

how boring

plus op said something spring like

Rainbowshit · 09/03/2023 20:39

I would make it £50 in vouchers plus a posh Easter egg and maybe some potted spring flowers.

perfect

ginghamstarfish · 10/03/2023 08:07

£70? For Easter? Sorry OP but this is bonkers and unnecessary. If parents have this money to burn, why not give this to local good causes instead, and teach the children about helping those worse off.

TheRosesAreInBloom · 10/03/2023 08:10

I think the teacher would much prefer an Easter egg and £60 to class resources!

Do you declare gifts for tax purposes?

KillingLoneliness · 10/03/2023 08:27

Why is this such a thing! I honestly don’t get it!? I never give the teachers gifts unless my child has asked to get them one and it’s usually something small and useful. How can people afford to being giving money away like this?

Snoopsnoggysnog · 10/03/2023 08:41

Please don’t get perfume as suggested above! That’s a terrible gift for someone you don’t even know.
not a velvetiser either, how do you even know she would use it?
seriously a nice egg and vouchers is fine.

It is a private school. They don’t need money for class resources!

kirinm · 10/03/2023 08:16

I have worked in the public sector (including schools) all of my life. The rule of thumb was that teachers shouldn’t be accepting anything over £25.
I understand that the op is talking about a private school which might be different and it’s unlikely that the tax man would pick this up, but you never know.
