Help me spend £70 on teacher’s Easter present

Class Rep here. One of my jobs is to buy the teacher a present from the class kitty on behalf of the parents at the end of each term. I would like to choose something Springlike but I’m cr*p at choosing presents, so would welcome suggestions from Mumsnetters. The budget is £70. It doesn’t have to be just one item, but a maximum of three. Thanks so much ☺️

Vouchers.

Cant go wrong with John Lewis vouchers.

Although, if it’s a state school teacher, they may well prefer a chocolate egg and the rest in glue sticks/pens, etc.

Survey99 · 09/03/2023 21:10

Easter gifts now???? Confused

Wish ds was still at school so I could tell the class rep they were being ridiculous! 🤣

What about a travel mug and a nice warm scarf and pair of gloves for the picket line?

Soontobe60 · 09/03/2023 21:11

As a teacher, I would be absolutely mortified if I received such an expensive gift from parents at any time of the year! It’s absolutely ridiculous.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Yes it’s a private school, and Easter presents are the done thing throughout, so it has to happen!

@ChangedForEmbarrassingQuestions, not to derail my own thread, but there is no class kitty for trips, felt pens, pencils, erasers, glue sticks or even scissors. We pay for these ourselves (not included in school fees). To misappropriate The Go Between, it is a foreign country and they do things differently there.

We don’t want expensive Easter presents. —we want proper pay and a work life balance but that’s beside the point!!—

I’ve never had an Easter gift card/ expensive present and would feel awkward to receive something of that value. I don’t eat chocolate so eggs are regifted.
Why not buy some books for the class / school library or ask the teacher what resources they need and spend the money on that?

Mexicocalling · 09/03/2023 21:12

Get a voucher - JL or Amazon both great options - and the rest towards either a nice egg or similar ‘treat’. A tin of Biscuiteers is one of my go-to gifts for situations like this.

Whu · 09/03/2023 21:13

Ok cross post and cross out fail.
Crack on with a voucher then while I research international private schools to work in Grin.

FannyCann · 09/03/2023 21:16

Good God. Easter presents? Presents each term?
My DDs' teachers got homemade chocolate truffles at Christmas and a thank you card at the end of the year! (Often home made).

There's a lot of pressure on parents who don't subscribe to all this gift giving to have to contribute (whether or not finances or principles are the issue). And who hands over the present to the teacher? Any particular child...? On a regular basis...?

It appears that the parents have money to burn, both on teacher gifts and on resources.

Dee00 · 09/03/2023 21:23

They have a lovely Easter beauty egg on look fantastic, I think it’s £60. That would make a lovely gift with a nice bouquet of spring flowers or bottle of Prosecco to go with it.

MissCatLady · 09/03/2023 21:26

I'm a teacher and would never expect a gift at Easter, but it is very lovely of you all! As a teacher I constantly have to buy my own resources such as glue sticks, marker pens and art supplies ect... it might be worth checking if your class need anything. Also, some new books so the teacher can enjoy them with her class.

Lindy2 · 09/03/2023 21:26

A present every few months for doing their job?

I'm glad I'm not a parent at that school constantly being asked to make donations.

Shinyandnew1 · 09/03/2023 21:28

Wow-I am definitely in the wrong school!

How about an Easter egg, bottle of wine and the rest in Amazon vouchers?

Justalittlebitduckling · 09/03/2023 21:29

If it’s a class of 25, that’s less than £3 per child. Not sure why everyone is getting their knickers in a twist over this.

Duckingella · 09/03/2023 21:29

ibuymeownflowers · 09/03/2023 20:52

At the end of each term? Don't be so ridiculous.

Buy a £3 egg and donate the rest to a foodbank you've all got money to burn!!

Well that's incredibly rude. It's easy to post nasty comments like that from the sanctuary of an anonymous profile and a keyboard isn't it?

Many people are struggling right now including professionals eg teachers, nurses etc

Maybe the gifts like a voucher,a nice Easter egg etc would be appreciated as they might not be able to treat themselves at the moment;they may even be a single parent/the only one working in their household.

As for the money to burn comment;a class of 30 children = £2.50 per set of parents/parent;that makes £70 from a small donation each.

ilovesooty · 09/03/2023 21:33

It's a different world though, isn't it? There are so many state schools strapped for cash where teachers are funding resources from their own pockets. It just seems inherently unfair.

Starlitestarbright · 09/03/2023 21:38

This sounds completely tone deaf there is a cost of living crisis parents not eating struggling with the cost of fuel. A gift for Easter completely mad. Christmas gifts were bad enough. I could understand end of the year but even then should be a 2 pound box fo chocolates. I'd nip this in the bud. Stop the pressure on parents. I'm gobsmacked the teacher would accept this tbh.

HeadacheEarthquake · 09/03/2023 21:42

Wow what a lucky teacher but I defo agree £50 voucher for a spa shop or if she likes kindle or a clothes brand, then a very posh easter egg/bottle of wine

Lcb123 · 09/03/2023 21:44

Definitely nothing with a photo of the kids! I’d go voucher for something (shopping,
spa, afternoon tea) and posh Easter egg

GenXxx · 09/03/2023 21:44

Please not Biscuiteers. I have a massive sweet tooth but these were borderline disgusting. Pretty but super disappointing.

SeeYouNextTLol · 09/03/2023 21:46

Bloody hell. Very generous parents.

Goodnewsday · 09/03/2023 21:46

Yes I’m a teacher and 100% would like a voucher for a meal out or local shopping centre, maybe a nice bit of chocolate too to make it seem like a nice gift. We have classes in the school who have always chipped in for a voucher, you are informed by the previous teacher if you’re getting ‘a voucher class’ as they’re the amazing classes to have! 🤩

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/03/2023 21:46

The parents have enough money to send their children to a fee paying school, so I imagine the expensive termly teacher gifts are all part of the expectation.

Not something your average state school teacher will know much about.

SeeYouNextTLol · 09/03/2023 21:49

I hope it is one of the teachers that is dedicated and not the other batch that just do it to fit in with their life and see it as an inconvenience and money for old rope.

Enufsaid · 09/03/2023 21:49

entirely vouchers and some flowers if I was choosing
