Triggering, but would we get warning if there was a Nuclear attack?

shineanight · 09/03/2023 07:19

Or would we not?

I thought there was about 5-6 minutes I'm sure I read somewhere, from when officials know it'll happen to when it hits

Would we be warned via breaking news? Or would everyone just lose control, including news reporters, and make a run for it in blind panic?

Always wondered. Completely hypothetical obviously as almost 0 change of ever happening

No idea but why would this question be in any way 'triggering'???

EmptyPlaces · 09/03/2023 07:29

A warning would be useless anyway. The power of them today means that if one hit Paris, the UK would be mostly wiped out in a nuclear winter. I’d rather just take a direct hit and be vaporised immediately.

stbrandonsboat · 09/03/2023 07:30

A message would be sent via the mobile network. Television and radio broadcasts would also be used.

Is this thread intended to be triggering? 🤔

Because some people worry about this type of thing a lot. Understandably as they're anxious or paranoid

My curiosity is just that. Curiosity. But someone else might benefit from a warming since it might play on their mind if they read the thread?

Twitter would know before the news channels said anything.
I worry about everything but not this.

PolkaDotMankini · 09/03/2023 07:34

What would be the point? We don't have nuclear bunkers for the public. It would cause an awful lot of distress - imagine people driving like maniacs, parents trying to decide which child's school to run to. 5-6 minutes of terror when there's nothing anyone can do about it.

Interesting. I don't think anybody's particularly interested right now as the Russians know full well that if they hit us, everyone else will hit them. We're always being threatened and those threats are now meaningless. The impotent dictator has nothing else to do.

CarrieSmisher · 09/03/2023 07:35

6 minutes isn't enough time for the obligatory looting of tv's and setting fire to stuff which is what we'd obviously all need to do whilst we panic.

In all seriousness, from my 1980's education, we just need to hide under a mattress with some canned goods and we'll be fine to survive the initial blast. Unfortunately the fallout will get us so I'd advise not using the lift saving mattress as a quick death is probably kinder.

Take it you are still scarred from threads too? 🤣🤣

JunkinDonuts · 09/03/2023 07:37

Apparently we would have enough time to...
Build a shelter.
Paint it white.
Paint ourselves white for good measure.
Get 14 days worth of food, water and medicines together.
Find a battery operated radio.
Find batteries for the radio.
Gather the family into the shelter.
Sit in shelter wondering if you've forgotten anything before deciding that you need a wee and realising you've forgotten the bucket.

All in four minutes.

CarrieSmisher · 09/03/2023 07:37

@HouseofHolbein Yes very 🤣

HouseofHolbein · 09/03/2023 07:39

@CarrieSmisher glad it's not just me 🤣🤣

Also The Day After and When The Wind Blows 😭😭

stbrandonsboat · 09/03/2023 07:39

Don't worry about things that you have no control over.

Putin is a pathetic disaster, he has more to worry about than we do. He's wrecked his country and everyone hates him. A tinpot dictator with rusty nukes 😂

JamBiscuitBun · 09/03/2023 07:39

Rusty nukes 😂

ibuymeownflowers · 09/03/2023 07:40

Would you want warning?

HedwigIsMyDemon · 09/03/2023 07:40

@HouseofHolbein or When the Wind Blows, or Z for Zachariah!

Threads was terrifying though - I would definitely not want to survive 😩😬😳😄.

Some people might. To say a final prayer etc

My dad was playing golf in Hawaii once when everyone's phones suddenly gave an alert of an incoming ballistic missile, and warning to get under cover. It was an error in the system.

People are no longer religious though 😉

So many books I read about the aftermath of a nuclear war! I made the decision at 14 that I would stand outside in the event of a nuclear siren and hope for death. Still think the same tbh.

shineanight · 09/03/2023 07:43

@stbrandonsboat loads of people are. And they'd want to make their peace with God etc before meeting him

I'm not a believer but again, it's not just me who would be going. Don't we owe people the respect to tell them? If we can?

Why would you be concerned about this?

We haven't had one of these threads for a while now.

Brokendaughter · 09/03/2023 07:47

Decades ago, there was a telephone network for the 'important' people to be alerted in that sort of emergency.

I suspect there is a modern day equivalent.

Telling the general public would just clog up the roads, jam up mobile networks with all the people trying to call others they loved & generally get in the way of the people who are on the 'important people' list, so I don't think they'd risk us lesser mortals possibly getting in the way of those who are regarded as more special.

It's not like you'd have enough time to do much unless you happen to already live in a fully stocked nuclear bunker.

There is no point worrying about it unless it's your actual job, so why not find something more cheerful to think about instead?

InsomniacAgain · 09/03/2023 07:50

I remember the 80s, so yes, there would be a warning. I also remember Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Two Tribes which ended with "Mine will be the last voice you ever hear", so I can still remember the voice of the guy who would broadcast.

Personally I think I'd rather not know and just be obliterated without warning or worry.

RainbowBrightside · 09/03/2023 07:51

Read Children of the Dust. That’ll tell you all you need to know about whether it’s best to survive the initial blast or whether it’s best to just die straight away. Might be a book for teenagers but it’s still extremely enlightening.
