Triggering, but would we get warning if there was a Nuclear attack?

Or would we not?

I thought there was about 5-6 minutes I'm sure I read somewhere, from when officials know it'll happen to when it hits

Would we be warned via breaking news? Or would everyone just lose control, including news reporters, and make a run for it in blind panic?

Always wondered. Completely hypothetical obviously as almost 0 change of ever happening

I don't think the general public would get a warning from the govt. As others have said, it would just cause panic and chaos, and we don't have bunkers for general use. However it would I suppose depend on whether the UK was being targeted or whether another country nearby had been hit, then we would know that had happened, and would then be worrying over which way the radioactive cloud was heading.

Yes Switzerland do have bunkers, saw them on a recent BBC travel show episode. Even so, I don't know how long one can survive that way, or how long you'd need to stay there to be (relatively) safe coming out. As usual, I suspect the UK will be totally unprepared despite having 'plans' already (just like the pandemic plans, remember those?).

Personally not worth worrying about.

Snoken · 09/03/2023 08:27

What would you do though if you had 6 minutes to live? I'd like to think I'd do something outrageous but I'd probably just be paralysed with fear.

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 09/03/2023 08:30

No. Well, a few minutes maybe.

Kucinghitam · 09/03/2023 08:38

I really enjoyed this lighthearted podcast about British nuclear fallout shelters:

podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/we-are-history/id1493436225?i=1000469208396

(Me, I'd want to be as close to ground zero as possible).

WonderingWanda · 09/03/2023 08:41

I might start carrying a hip flask full of gin and tonic, 4 mins would be just enough time to drink it!

bussteward · 09/03/2023 08:42

Fondly recalling my eccentric uncle telling me he used to carry a knife with him so in the event of a nuclear warning, he could mercy slaughter all the kids to spare them a slow, horrible death in a nuclear fallout 🥰

kittensinthekitchen · 09/03/2023 08:47

I hope so. I have a joint stashed away for an apocalypse situation, so I can just sit and chill and wait for inevitable death.

Once a month on a Saturday morning a big chemical factory sounds it's siren, it's a test of the warning to close windows and stay indoors in case something has gone wrong like a leak.

Every month there are people in local groups asking what the siren was. Often the same people.

There will be no warning of a nuclear attack. What would it achieve?

Murraydeservedit · 09/03/2023 08:55

Would you want warning?

I wouldn’t. If my child was at school, my last moments would be in a panic about her. and if she was frightened and crying for me. I could run to her school in 5 mins, but I bet it would be all locked down and I would have my toddler with me.

Or would the teachers who are parents try to get to their own children?

It’s just a nightmare really but not something I have any control over so I can’t worry.

This. My children’s school is over 10 miles away. I’d be beside myself

"Triggering"? How? Who here can possibly have PTSD from a nuclear attack

🙄

Would you want warning?

Yes, I would like a final cup of tea and pick up my favourite book for the final time.

bussteward · 09/03/2023 08:12

I don’t want a warning. Imagine how many batshit MN threads could erupt in the space of six minutes. I want to die as I have lived: arguing about loo brushes and MILs on the internet.

AIBU to not want MIL to shelter in our bunker?

SnowdayYay · 09/03/2023 09:03

Op I've often wondered this and to be honest it would be good to know what the exact current Russian protocol on nuclear stuff is.

At present I don't believe it would be in anyone's interest to trigger anything. Everyone mostly has family and loved ones.

But with putins strange state of mind who knows

Calistan · 09/03/2023 07:54

I might be being naive but I think the whole nuclear war is a bit overblown. I doubt humans as a whole would die out. Most of the films and things were made during an era where people thought it could happen.

The issue with neucs isn't the initial blast, which certainly reduce the human population, but the fallout. Water and food would be contaminated for years and years, so even if you survived the blast, pretty much anything you ate or drank would be pretty toxic.

And 6 mins is the perfect amount of time needed to find then smoke your stashed joint Grin

AffIt · 09/03/2023 09:10

I love about 40 miles away from Faslane.

The one good thing about a nuclear strike is that I'd be a shadow in the ground before I even had time to think.

AffIt · 09/03/2023 09:10

Live, not love! Bloody hell.

housemaus · 09/03/2023 09:11

I live not far from a few nukeable places, so I'm going to assume even if I got a few minutes warning it'd be pointless. But I'd still like to know, out of curiosity.

anunlikelyseahorse · 09/03/2023 09:14

I'm not sure a warning would be much help. In the few minutes available I'd never get the dc schools in time, I often think the thought of something is often worse than the event itself. I guess the only good thing about the warning would be time to let our two rabbits go, let chickens out, and make sure the garden gate was open so dog and cat could stand a chance of survival.
Might have to go and read 'on the Beach' haven't read any Neville Shute for a while.

WandaWonder · 09/03/2023 09:14

A warning for what? Get through all of breaking bad in time?

Surplus2requirements · 09/03/2023 09:19

4 mins is plenty of time to award Gov contracts for HazMat suits

Murraydeservedit · 09/03/2023 09:22

I’m about 9 miles from central Birmingham. So if that was struck, I’m hoping i’d be close enough to die immediately?

I went down a rabbit hole of looking at maps, it would be depend on size of weapon etc.
