Energy price cap to remain for another three months

mibbelucieachwell · 15/03/2023 13:01

Subsidy gone as was previously planned

AnElegantChaos · 15/03/2023 13:08

Martin Lewis is live-tweeting it, worth keeping an eye on

mibbelucieachwell · 15/03/2023 13:10

Ooh thank you

L1ttledrummergirl · 15/03/2023 13:26

I have a migraine so not really taking it in, but he is a smug bastard who is under the delusional belief that finances in the country are amazing.

I've been struggling to process the facts I the shit he's saying but it doesn't sound as though it's good for me. Possibly the opposite.

mibbelucieachwell · 15/03/2023 13:38

Sorry to hear you have a migraine @L1ttledrummergirl . I hope it shifts very soon.

L1ttledrummergirl · 15/03/2023 13:42

I might be missing something but why are businesses not being encouraged to pay a proper wage so that one person can earn enough to bring up a family. That way the other parent can either choose to stay home, or choose to work (which will pay enough to make it worth while even if people have to pay their own childcare).
This is leading to more subsidising of employers who are keeping wages artificially low.

L1ttledrummergirl · 15/03/2023 13:43

@mibbelucieachwell thank you, painkillers are amazing things.

DuncinToffee · 15/03/2023 13:49

I have only just got in, anything about public sector wages?

Notonthestairs · 15/03/2023 13:56

Breaking:

OBR says that real living standards are still expected to fall by a cumulative 5.7% in 2022-23 and 2023-24

It’s better than previous forecasts but will still be the largest fall in living standards since records began in 1956-57

mibbelucieachwell · 15/03/2023 14:02

Zero about public sector wages.

Notonthestairs · 15/03/2023 14:06

Standby for an immigration row. The higher OBR growth forecasts that allow Hunt to say there will be no recession this year are based on.... higher immigration.

On the pension pot changes

Chancellor just announced a massive inheritance tax loophole - put as much as you can into your pension, then take it out if you need it, if not it goes to your heirs tax-free

pointythings · 15/03/2023 14:14

Budget matters aside, has anyone seen this lunacy from a DEFRA adviser? Apparently sheep having been brought in 6000 years ago (Soay, other breeds with the Romans) makes them an invasive species and we shouldn't have them. Want to bet he has financial interests in sheep farms in Australia and/or NZ?

Ah, that's quite simple. If a parent stays at home to raise children it does not contribute to GDP. Whereas if the same parent does a low paid job subsidised by the government in the form of Universal Credit and free childcare it contributes to all important GDP, as does the childcare. Never mind what is in the long term best interests of the child, family or society.

Notonthestairs · 15/03/2023 14:25

Ben Goldsmith -

Concerns were also raised about the appropriateness of his appointment given his previous donations to the Conservative Party and Michael Gove’s political campaigns, plus the involvement of one of his business partners in the selection process for the job.

Notonthestairs · 15/03/2023 14:26

Sorry the Gdsmith reference was for pointy.

mibbelucieachwell · 15/03/2023 14:26

That's a dangerous line of logic to try to use @pointythings 😆

Haven't many many animals been brought in to our precious isles? Keep a close eye on your pets folks or they'll be deported 😄

Pension pot - will bring 15,000 more people into the labour force according to OBR. So that'll make hardly any difference at all. While suiting the likes of JRM et al nicely.

pointythings · 15/03/2023 14:29

@mibbelucieachwell well, quite so. I mean, if we're looking that far back we can deport 95% of the current population of the British Isles on the grounds of being 'not native', and probably north of 80% of plant and animal species which we depend on for food.

And let's face it, that man wouldn't recognise a Soay if it jumped a 5 ft fence right in front of him. (I used to live on a farm that had Soays, they are hilarious).

countrygirl99 · 15/03/2023 15:51

On that basis people are an invasive species as well so we should all be sent to East Africa.

countrygirl99 · 15/03/2023 15:52

Or exterminated. Take your pick.

Saucery · 15/03/2023 16:10

They must suffer terribly soaked through and exposed on our windy, wet hillsides year-round.

What, Herdwicks et al? What an utter loon he sounds.

Cornettoninja · 15/03/2023 16:49

I’ve been reading a thread about the childcare changes as people are realising the timescales involved in implementing this. The first babies to benefit from the provisions from nine months will have to be born on/after December 2024. Then the reality of ratios, places and staff shortages are hitting and people seem to be cottoning on very quickly this is looking like a very empty, unworkable, policy.

countrygirl99 · 15/03/2023 16:50

My DC are grown up. The DCin the UK has a partner who can't have any children, let alone ones that would get the free childcare. I don't have a mega pension pot. I took our a 2 year fix on electricity that runs out end of August. The only thing that affects me in this budget is the frozen personal allowance. There must be a lot of people like me.
