Anyone remember a chain bakery/cafe called "Oliver's"

The sign had a small boy holding a basket of bread I think. Brown and yellow type colour scheme..

Stores had a bakery at the entrance and cafe tables at the back. I remember being taken there as a child in the 80s was a treat. Think it was a nationwide chain!

My school friends (twins)'s Dad had one of the franchises. I remember being so impressed when they brought in doughnuts for the class on their birthday.

Jacket potato was my go-to. Why don't more places do them now?

I'm impressed how many people used the Enfield Branch! - it was in the outside shipping "precinct" behind the main street - near to the Waitrose (used to enjoy a cake in there after being taken to the playground/paddling pool in town park by Grandparents)

Flapjacker48 That’s the one we used to go to as well! Wow, so many people visited the Enfield one. The Town Park was lovely, I remember it having a really tall slide or maybe that’s just my memories as a small child.

They really were so lovely and fresh and the bread actually tasted of…..bread! All crusty and nice, plenty of filling and fresh salad. It was always busy too. Why didn’t they last I wonder?

Was there one in Manchester…in Shambles Square? Seem to remember going there with my parents as a kid and feeling very grown up!

There was one in Slough and we used to go there after a shopping trip to C&A. They did coffee with whipped cream on the top, which looking back was a weird thing for a 10 year old to have.

I remember the Slough one and C&A!

Different times.......

There was an Olivers at the town centre entrance to the Thistles shopping centre in Stirling. After visiting the Fine Fare supermarket, which had a rooftop car park, my mum and dad would take us into Stirling and get a loaf of unsliced bread from Olivers, fresh and warm from the oven. Sometimes it was still warm when you got home and the butter would melt on it when you spread a slice.

I have memories of their wonderful sandwiches made with thick soft bread and tons of filling - quite unlike any other sandwiches I've ever come across.

daimlerdreamer · 28/10/2024 20:47

I remember Oliver's very well. My girlfriend at the time worked firstly in the Perth, Scotland, branch and then Inverness. We also visited Aberdeen and Glasgow branches. The stand out for me were the deep filled sandwiches made from extra thick bakery cooked bread, served in white polystyrene boxes. Wonderful memories. I have a photo of the Inverness branch in the late 80s.

I never knew it was a chain. The one I went to was in Ealing. Loved going there.

Ealing Olivers circa 1984 too!!

From a generation brought up to think of a sandwich as only having two fillings ( ham and tomato/cheese and pickle) , suddenly you could choose about 6 different fillings including coleslaw!!!

Many happy Friday after school afternoons spent there.

bruffin · 28/10/2024 20:53

I remember when they opened in Enfield Town, used to go with my DM.

AnOldCynic · 28/10/2024 21:41

@Womencanlift, yes! Cheese and coleslaw... Ours also served tea in the red plastic typhoo teapots.

Is this what was in Liverpool Central Station back in the day? I had a very dry chocolate muffin from there once. I was gutted because I'd always wanted to go in there because some of the seating was just below street level, which seemed impossibly classy to me in the late 80s.

I remember going to that cafe with my grandparents when they used to take me out on trips to Liverpool. I had an enormous chocolate eclair there once.

NotThisShitAgain121 · 03/02/2025 19:27

You remember they did have the ugly mugs as well. I used to go there with ,y boyfriend (now husband) on the eighties for coffee there. Will never understand why they closed as they were very popular as a Coffee shop chain.

ViolaPlains · 07/02/2025 22:05

Yes. I think there was one on Market Street, Manchester - where the large Boots is now.

DurhamDurham · 11/02/2025 07:44

This was the one in Newcastle on Northumberland Street. Many a happy Saturday spent there with a prawn super bun complete with spicy onions.
