Anyone remember a chain bakery/cafe called "Oliver's"

The sign had a small boy holding a basket of bread I think. Brown and yellow type colour scheme..

Stores had a bakery at the entrance and cafe tables at the back. I remember being taken there as a child in the 80s was a treat. Think it was a nationwide chain!

Yes! Their millionaire's shortbread was amazing, I used to get one every day for my work lunch from the Cardiff one (when I was young and thin obvs!).

Olivers! Used to go with my nan and mum late 80s. I would have an egg roll that was just delicious and a huge cream cake. The lighting always felt really warm and inviting.

'Oliver's, crusty bread
Time for breakfast you sleep head
Smell the bread as it leaves the oven
That's Oli, that's Oliver's bread'

I loved the sandwiches, I remember a triple decker one, think it was called the bill saykes?

Mochudubh · 06/03/2023 11:15

The nearest one to me is now a Gregg's. Maybe Greggs took them over. I'm sure they were still a thing up till 2-3 years before Covid.

Mrsjayy · 06/03/2023 11:17

Yes ours is now a Greggs

frankie001 · 06/03/2023 11:18

I used to work in one! When they were chucking out the crockery when we closed, I saved an entire set! They were bought out by Bakers Oven.

Mrsjayy · 06/03/2023 11:19

Ah yes Bakers oven they didn't last long if I remember rightly.

Yes!

Maybe there were bought out by Baker's Oven - they ceased to exist as a chain many years before covid!

No, but in Bristol we had Mountstevens and they had about 50 shops in a 50 mile radius.

BashfulClam · 07/03/2023 01:41

No, my husband talks about it though. His dad used to bring him home a sandwich from the Glasgow branch occasionally.

costamum · 07/03/2023 01:51

I'd forgotten about Oliver's - used to go to the one in Ealing on our breaks in my 1 year at Ealing College!

I’ve never heard of it, it obviously never reached my part of the South West!

Never heard of it either. We had an Olivers but it was a wine bar. I do remember Poppins cafe though..I saw the Queen drive past from inside there. It must have been the early 90s.

Spent a large portion of my teen years at Oliver's in Newcastle.

Prawn salad super bun with spicy red onions on top. I've never had another prawn sandwich half as nice as those just to be.

Netaporter · 07/03/2023 05:08

How funny, was only thinking about Oliver’s last week. Portions were huge. The Romford branch was the place to go. First time I ever tried a Tuna/sweetcorn mayo combo. On a jacket potato. As Peter Kay would say, it was ‘a taste sensation’ 😂

colourmebladd · 07/03/2023 05:20

When we moved house a few years ago I found an Oliver’s mug in amongst my childhood stuff. It must be from about 1987.

TinaTotal · 07/03/2023 05:48

There was one in Slough and we used to go there after a shopping trip to C&A. They did coffee with whipped cream on the top, which looking back was a weird thing for a 10 year old to have.

TimeForMeToF1y · 07/03/2023 06:11

I have a vague memory that they were taken over by gteggs

ChessieFL · 07/03/2023 06:42

hellswelshy · 07/03/2023 07:45

Yes! We had one in Cardiff, like a pp I especially remember being impressed with the crisps by the side of the sandwich as a child- so great!

cantmovewont · 09/03/2023 00:44

a. OMG - Del Amitri
b. I've just remembered our entire school got banned from Oliver's in Ipswich when I was in the sixth form in 1988....

ChessieFL · 09/03/2023 05:03

No idea if Poppins was a chain - I just remember the one in Taunton. Disappeared years ago.
