If you WFH.. how do you spend your lunch break?

I kind of miss office lunch breaks.. out for food with a colleague, nose in the shops, walk along the river..

At home sometimes I drag myself to the gym if I'm lucky enough to get a break that isn't sandwiched either side by meetings. Walking around our local area is dull and been done to death during covid, and when it's cold it's not appealing at all.

I find myself bored doing errands rather than having some downtime to recharge. Doesn't help that my partner is always here so I can't be selfish and do something I'd like.. he just has pure shite on the tv like bargain hunt while he sits there on his phone.. and I can't relax! I'd love to sit and read a book but he's too noisy 😅

Keen to know how others spend their break! (And before anyone says yet, yes I know sometimes we're lucky to get one at all - that's an entirely different issue 😅)

Swim (meetings permitting) at the gym or dog walk. Used to read a book in the days before we got the dog. Sit in garden in the summer. Bliss.

While my early days working we often did get a proper lunch when we could go to the pub, last few years it was a rare thing - lunch was at our desks. Wfh now and I'll can go to the kitchen and get something hot.

DH doesn't WFH much now, but when he did he eat his lunch watching Bargain Hunt (glad I was leaving for work around that time as it's not something I'd want to watch myself). His lunch is usually a pre-prepared sandwich or leftovers, so sometimes if it's nice and he's taking more than 20mins, he'll go for a walk.

riotlady · 28/02/2023 14:59

I watch tv or read a book, I only normally take 30 mins though.

Witchbitch20 · 28/02/2023 15:17

For the last 6 months work have been putting “training/development” sessions in during lunchtime (and have more planned for the next twelve months) at least once per week.

We’ve all been told to attend “for our benefit”. It’s absolutely irritated me. I rarely get to take a lunch break, but must take 30 minutes (at least) of my timesheet.

So I know go for a walk whenever these sessions are in my diary.

I WFH full time and take an hour each day for lunch.

Generally I'll use the first half an hour or so to go for a walk around our village. There are a few different loops I can do to mix it up and a couple of different cafes and a delicatessen to choose from where I'll pick up a sandwich/salad to bring back with me.

I then try to spend the rest of my lunch break in the garden, or at least away from my home office, eating my lunch and reading a chapter or two of my book.

Occasionally all of the above goes out the window e.g. if I have errands to run in town/need to do a trip to the recycling centre, etc.

Go for a run or walk
Watch rubbish Tv
Read
Clean house
Run errands
Sit in the garden (summertime)
Occasionally have a nap!

Amy8 · 28/02/2023 15:22

In awful and do housework ! But today went for a walk and called mum

I also am near enough fully remote so find myself mentally always being checked in

ViktoriaPlzen · 28/02/2023 15:36

Work through it so I can finish earlier

Xiaoxiong · 28/02/2023 17:32

I either spend it on the Peloton, or meet a friend for lunch on the high st. Or lunch at home al desko and then use lunch break to meet a friend for a coffee-walk.

Ponderingwindow · 28/02/2023 17:34

I just take a shorter lunch so I can end my day earlier.

whiteroseredrose · 28/02/2023 17:46

I have half an hour so a quick sandwich watching Bargain Hunt with DH.

PandasAreUseless · 28/02/2023 17:48

I either:

  • Walk the dog (if I haven't already taken her that morning)
  • Sit at the kitchen table, looking over the garden, scrolling mumsnet and a bit of news
  • Watch one episode of something on TV. Typically something light, like Alan Partridge!
ChiefWiggumsBoy · 28/02/2023 17:49

Napping.

SouthernComforter · 28/02/2023 17:49

I just try to move my body about - so, mostly, a walk or jog around the local park, listen to music or the birds. Try to notice the blossoms etc. Occasionally (not enough) I'll walk with someone or meet them for a coffee. I'm not really close enough to get to town and back but sometimes I can get to my local shops/post office and back. Daylight and movement are important to me to break the day up.

Lulubelle15 · 28/02/2023 17:49

I use my lunch break to collect the kids from school. If they are at home I usually do household talks - such is life!

SweetSakura · 28/02/2023 17:50

I take it at 2.30-3.30 so I can pick up the kids from school (walking the longer, prettier route as long as I feel well enough)

Heatherbell1978 · 28/02/2023 17:50

Most of the time I eat lunch at my desk but I usually take time away at other times. I try not to be regimented about 'taking a lunch hour', rather I look at my calendar in the morning, see when I can take a walk or do something away from my desk and then block that time out instead. A couple of days a week I have a school run to do so that essentially is my 'off time'

Random102 · 28/02/2023 17:52

I go for a run. I started couch to 5k as my New Years resolution and have stuck to running 3 times a week.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 28/02/2023 17:52

Today I caught up with the Last of Us from yesterday. Sometimes I MN, or catch with chores or admin. If its warm and sunny, I'll sit outside and read a book.

Custardbanana · 28/02/2023 17:53

Potter in the garden
Laundry
Washing up
Pop to shops
Go for a walk
Quick tidy up and a hoover
Shower

dizzygirl1 · 28/02/2023 17:53

Don't generally have a lunch break. Just usually grab a biscuit or2 whilst working. It's not good and I'm gaining weight.
I really need to do 'something' 😢

Trickedbyadoughnut · 28/02/2023 17:55

I'd go to a class at the gym either on your lunchbreak or in the morning and then take 20 mins lunch, as that'd be a bit more sociable than just the gym.

MarkHemmings · 28/02/2023 17:56

I 'worked' from home before I retired from the civil service and made lunch last all day ....

MirandaWest · 28/02/2023 17:56

Generally a walk of about 40 minutes and then get some lunch and back to my desk again. Maybe hang some washing out.

Today's was spent trying to help 17 year old DD feel calmer about something to do with school.
