In praise of the bed jacket

In recent times (keeping the heating down ‘cos COL crisis) I have been wearing a woolly cardigan to sit up in bed whilst reading, watching tv or MN’ing

It’s great. Less bulky than a dressing gown. Better than an Oodie because I can just unwrap rather than pull over my head and spoil my curlers when I am ready to snuggle down. Can just chuck on the floor until the morning.

Them old ladies did things right. I am thinking of sourcing a Teasmade.

Anyone else use a bed jacket ?

Yes , of course. If you read in bed, it’s essential.

I tend to use a fleecy shirt or a proper fleece bed jacket, as they are easier to wash than a knitted cardigan.

Pearfacebananapoop · 27/02/2023 23:12

Yes! Greetings from my fleecy jacket! I got it in Sainsburys a couple of years ago. It's soooo warm and also quite funky in style as these things go, kind of a waterfall design collar. My DD wants one but I can't find a kids one!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 27/02/2023 23:18

I want one! Fed up with cold arms in bed, not been able to find a proper fleecy bed jacket they all seem to be sweatshirt style, totally impractical, I also wear fingerless gloves my hands get freezing reading in bed.

Yes, I need an alternative material to the woolly cardi

What were the Official Old Lady Bed Jackets made out of ?

I am a big fan too. Lots on the internet made of fleece or quilted polyester.

AnyFucker · 27/02/2023 23:25

This looks fabulous

Next had some before Christmas, Debenhams too and a brand called Camille.

I wear a couple of cardigans (not together). One’s made from something with mohair and the other one cotton and cashmere. Both from the fat face sale about 15 years ago and bought to wear with pyjamas.

I looked a lot for one before Christmas but couldn’t get to grips with the synthetic fabric idea. I’m menopausal 🥵. Decided to stick with what I’ve got.

I remember my grandmothers wearing them back in the day. They were knitted I think but in a lacy style stitch with a ribbon tie at the neck and looser sleeves than a cardi. They probably knitted them themselves.

I need a Nan to knit me one

Oh, I am a nan. Blimey, not much good at it 😣

I wear a hoodie or fleece lined shirt as my bed jacket. I've also got a cape/wrap kind of thing for when it's not quite as cold as this. And a poncho. Grin

Gjallerhorn · 27/02/2023 23:43

I can up the stakes I use a shawl in bed.

DuckWithOneWing · 27/02/2023 23:45

I have a teasmade and love it! You set it at night and it wakes you up with a cuppa

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 27/02/2023 23:47

Years ago, in the night feeding stage, I had a cashmere one. Much missed. Moths ate it while I was in the subsequent life stage of chasing toddlers around for several years.

I would look after it so well now if I could only have it back 😔

BarbaraWoodlouse · 27/02/2023 23:49

Well over 100 knitting/crochet patterns on Ravelry for the craftily inclined.

I've got an amazing navy cotton/fleece combo one from The Gap of all places! Went in for something cool and trendy, came out with a bed jacket...

Everyonesinvited · 28/02/2023 00:07

You have to get the teasmaid. These are all wonderful tips for living well.

Pixiedust1234 · 28/02/2023 00:10

I think a shawl would be better as easier to get off. Hmmmmm....wonder where I can get a decent one (and not seen a teasmaid in years!)

Beachhutnut · 28/02/2023 00:17

Another shawl wearer here 👋

My Nan used to lend me one when we stayed over. Council house with metal, single glazed windows and no central heating! I used to think I was very posh as I sat up in bed reading her copies of’People’s Friend’!

Annotated1 · 28/02/2023 03:21

I used to have a nice fake fur fuschia pink one. Don’t know where it went. Now I sometimes wear my dressing gown back to front, like a hairdressers cape, when reading in bed.

WandaWonder · 28/02/2023 03:42

I have bed cardigans and going out ones, I love them

Well the going out ones means I go out so not like those ones as much 😁

NastyNiff · 28/02/2023 04:06

Velour zip-up hoodie here

I’m a nurse and I’m ALWAYS banging on about bed jackets for my patients. It gets really chilly in our hospital and I’m always asking relatives to bring in cardigans when they visit. If I could knit I’d set up a little cottage industry making them for both our male and female patients.

At home I’m also a big fan of a nice warm cardigan in bed for when I’m dicking around on MN
