If you are in the shoes off brigade

If you invite someone to your house, say as an evening guest , here is the scenario:

The guest has made an effort to dress up for the evening, say a nice dress, updo, jewellery etc. She turns up at your house where you ask all guests to take their shoes off. This guest turns to a carrier bag she has on her, and withdraws a pair of very nice shoes that she wishes to wear with her dress. They are not stilettos, so won't damage any wooden floors. She shows you the soles and explains they are specially clean ie have not been worn outside and have been wiped down to make sure they are spotless. She says she wishes to wear them as they are part of her outfit and she does not wish to be discomforted by having to go barefoot.

Would you acquiesce. If not, why not?

I’d be fine with that but I never have events at my house that require people to be dressed up to be fair.

Dogs should only have shampoo applied every two to three months. I really hope no one is showering with their dog twice daily. And giving him or her a wash. 😱

CoorieInByTheFire · 27/02/2023 15:15

I’m still waiting for someone to explain logically what is so unhygienic about showering your dog (with shampoo) whilst standing in the shower yourself. He likes it, it keeps him clean.

I get in the shower, wash, wash my hair, he is in the shower, I wash him, he rinses off under the clean water, the dirty water goes straight down the drain, I also rinse off under the clean water and the dirty water goes straight down the drain. He is now as clean as I am. We both get out, I clean the shower. Where’s the problem? It’s a hell of a lot cleaner than a human having a bath.

I have a health reason to keep myself, my flat, and my dog clean so it’s very convenient.

This simply isn’t true for all dog breeds.

nex18 · 27/02/2023 15:22

I sometimes go outside in bare feet or slippers 😱

We are shoes off house, but I would never ask a guest to remove their shoes. Most see ours on the rack by the door and see that I’m barefoot and automatically remove theirs. If they don’t, I don’t say anything as their comfort in my home is more important than my floors.

I find this too. I am not going to make someone uncomfortable.

That is exactly what we do @Grumpafrump. Although everyone removes their shoes anyway because it is the done thing round here. I prefer to wear slippers indoors. None of my shoes are uncomfortable, but wearing slippers is even more comfortable.

We inherited a light coloured carpet from the previous owners of the house. It is in excellent nick so we saw no point in going to the expense of replacing it. It also gets cleaned regularly. This is another reason we don't wear shoes.

Natsku · 27/02/2023 15:35

Do you shower the cat too?

I tried showering with my cat once. Big mistake, don't recommend it however dirty they are.

Botw1 · 27/02/2023 15:38

@Natsku

🤣🤣

This thread has to be the best one so far regarding shoes on / shoes off😂😂😂

Fascinating. I've never heard of anyone showering with their dog before.
Does all the dog hair block the drain?
Does he wait patiently while you wash yourself?
Do you both use the same shower gel and shampoo?

He doesn’t shed. I’ve said that more than once. He’s hairless, he has like a small tuft on his head and a bit on his tail, which doesn’t really come out at all. The only hair going down the drain is mine.

He just splashes about and plays in the water whilst I’m showering, it’s one of those double length walk in ones.

He has his own shampoo and coconut oil after.

Like I said, he’s really clean, and also old and doesn’t like going out much. He doesn’t lick people either or jump up, he’s a good boy who behaves very nicely. My next door neighbour didn’t even know I had a dog until she saw him on the balcony.

Maireas · 27/02/2023 17:34

I like dogs that don't jump up and don't smell.
Coconut is a nice scent.

Personally,'I'm a shoes off in the house' person,if possible, but one thing intrigues me. What do 'shoes off' households do when you have a workman, for example, come to your house? I don't even bother asking them to take their shoes (or more likely, boots) off,as I'd heard from a friend, and a family member, who are also 'shoes off' households, that when they'd asked a workman to take their shoes off, they'd been met with a flat refusal. Health and safety apparently. Just wondered if anyone on here has asked a workman to remove shoes, and what happened?

Many workmen will bring those plastic shoe covers with them, especially if they’re used to working in diverse communities where shoes off indoors is part of many peoples’ culture / important for religious reasons such as in Islam.

We’re a shoes off household (albeit not strictly insistent about it where guests are concerned) but I wouldn’t expect it of workman.

LoobyDop · 27/02/2023 18:08

We’re a “shoes off” house, and are currently having work done. Of course we haven’t asked the workmen to take their shoes off, that would be utterly ridiculous. They have put the carpet-protecting stuff down, but absolutely everything in the house is covered in a layer of plaster dust, including our throats, noses and lungs. It’s bloody miserable and disgusting. I don’t know how it will ever be clean again, and I wish we’d never started. But we haven’t been prissy pricks about shoes or anything else.

cakewench · 27/02/2023 18:12

If it's friends and I'm planning on staying for the evening, I have travel slippers. A lot of us feel more at home without outdoor shoes on.

We are a shoes-off house (DH is German and it's standard there, I'm a convert) but we never ask, I think most of our friends just do it out of habit. And if we're all just going to be in the uncarpeted kitchen/dining area then I tell people to only take shoes off if they wish to.

I do appreciate the other side, though. We have our habits and friend groups, we are generally comfortable around each other. However I've become closer with a more recent friend and she's started asking for shoes off immediately upon entry and it's awkward because the floors aren't carpeted and I hate being in my stocking feet on cold floors. I've had to up my slipper game with her. :)

YANBU btw. Clean shoes brought to wear with an outfit are totally fine and it's strange that someone would have an issue with that.

OMGyoucantbeserious · 27/02/2023 18:25

This is the funniest thread ever - "we're a shoes off house"! Who are you people? In all my years of having people round, or going to friends houses, we have never been asked to remove our shoes. I'd never ask guests to do so. Honestly - very bad manners. Maybe a class thing?

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 27/02/2023 18:26

An outfit? Inside, where no one will see you, that’s nuts. Check my username!

I don’t know anyone who would care, and I’d hope they’d feel comfortable enough in my house to chill out. Be totes awks when they’re the only one in shoes. Bare feet go with everything!

Botw1 · 27/02/2023 18:29

@LifesTooShortForYourNonsense

Life's too short to care about shoes on indoors

How do folk cope out in the real world?

Vitriolinsanity · 27/02/2023 18:32

How on Earth did we get from pondering shoes to showering daily with dogs.

<eyes Ddog and logistical nightmare, plan on sticking with groomer>

I don't enforce shoes off or clean my floors that often

😱😱

Me too! And we have carpets in most rooms 😱. We’ve not died yet.

AncientBallerina · 27/02/2023 18:33

LMFAO at wiping the cats paws!
Where did you get such an acquiescent cat?!
It should be fine to change into a clean pair of shoes honestly. I prefer people not to wear shoes upstairs in my house but I’d never ask anyone to take them off, kids maybe if they’ve been playing outside. Certainly not older people or where the shoes are clearly part of an outfit! What an earth do people think is going to happen? Apart from the obvious mud on white carpet or something. Honestly life is too short for this.
