Idiotic (drunk) DH stuck in London and I'm worried.

My DH is an idiot.

We held a small lunchtime/afternoon party for our staff earlier today. Our business is in the south of the county, we live in the north, about 35 miles/1hr 15 mins in the car, but by train you have to get one into London, and then another train back out - about a 2 hour journey all in.

I had 3 or 4 drinks and got a lift home at about 5.30 with our friend who had joined us from our local town. DH said he wanted stay for another couple of hours and would get the train home, thought he was being a bit daft, but he wanted to spend some more time with the team (and I had to get home for DD), so fair enough.

There was sight nor sound of him for a few hours (he usually calls whenever he's on his way home from anywhere) so I tried to contact him - no luck - looked on find my friend and he was still there. I was getting a bit worried about the trains on a Sunday night so checked and he'd missed any chance of getting home tonight by train, so I assumed he was going to stay there overnight (he has family close by). Not a problem - marginally annoying, but no big deal, and certainly the safest/easiest thing to do if he was drunk.

He eventually called me back and was standing on the station platform, almost incoherently drunk (obviously coherent enough to call me - speaking and listening not so much!), I told him that he'd missed all the trains from London to our town and said "whatever you do, do not get on the train to London as you'll be stuck at the other end". I told him to get a taxi to his parents' or brother's house, but ohhhh no, the train pulled up whilst I was still on the phone to him and he got on the bloody thing! I was trying to get through to him, but he just couldn't get it, slurring about it being fine and he'd get a train from x station, even though I was repeatedly telling him there were no trains.

His phone is now dead, he is stuck in London somewhere, insanely drunk, with a very flimsy blazer on. I'd like to think he'll cut his losses and find a hotel to stay in, but he is bloody minded when he's drunk and was absolutely insisting he would find a way home somehow.

I'm worried, really worried. I'm also pissed off as I will obviously get no sleep tonight and I've got a very busy day at work tomorrow.

What a fucking idiot. Agggghhhh!

I would be very unimpressed.

Lentil63 · 27/02/2023 00:48

I’m not sure there’s anything I can say to help you but it’s much the most likely that he’ll somehow manage and come back to you tomorrow with his tail between his legs nursing an almighty hangover. You probably won’t sleep tonight but try and concentrate on how relieved you are to see him when you do. X

Forever42 · 27/02/2023 00:51

He's an idiot but are there stations between where he got on and London where he could get off and get a taxi back to family?

It's unlikely any harm will happen to him. Even if he gets stuck in London he can probably hang around the station until first train out.

A friend of DH's missed the last train back from London once because he was drunk. He somehow let himself into the back of an unlocked van and fell asleep, then when he woke up realised he couldn't open the door from the inside.

I was trying to get him to get off the train and get a taxi back whilst I was still on the phone to him, but he just wasn't getting it, he was just repeating "I'll get a train from blah blah" even though I was telling him that he couldn't.

I tried every different possibility insofar as other places he could get to on the train from london where he could get a taxi home from, but there was nothing. I mean, he could get a taxi from London I guess, but it would cost an absolute fortune.

The van story made me laugh - can imagine the panic on his face when he realised he couldn't get out! Not what you want to contend with with a raging hangover.

God I’m stressed for you.

he’ll be alright though.

I'm trying to concentrate on that; the relief of seeing him safe and sound will be immense, but quite quickly superseded by how bloody angry I am with him!

He'll be ok. He'll be looking at an expensive taxi when he sobers up a bit. Easy to say, but try and sleep.

WinterMusings · 27/02/2023 01:11

Oh what a worry. Drunk people are SO frustrating!!

I'm sure he'll find a hotel (or a taxi) when he stops expecting a train to turn up just for him! Would he know your number or the house phone number (if you still have one) if he did get to a hotel?

you're allowed to kill the silly bastard when he does show up!

get comfy on the sofa & put some crap TV on.

x

Parroteets · 27/02/2023 01:26

Hopefully he'll get a taxi all the way back. It'll cost a fortune but it's better than being outside in the cold.

If he's really really drunk, the station staff or train staff may help him to get a cab.

OriginalUsername2 · 27/02/2023 01:29

I would be equally worried and raging OP!

Beezknees · 27/02/2023 06:27

Did he make it home ok?

EmptyEnvelope · 27/02/2023 07:05

Hope he got home okay!

inigomontoyahwillcox · 27/02/2023 07:07

He did - he turned up at silly hour after wandering aimlessly around london for couple of hours and finally sobering up enough to get a taxi. God knows how much it cost, but at least he's home.

He's currently snoring away - I've got to get up, sort out DD and head off to work. I shall be speaking to him later.

And he's the boss of the company?? I would not be at all impressed by a grown man who gets so drunk at a work function for his own company he can't get himself home. It's hardly attractive

Justcallmebebes · 27/02/2023 07:15

Cross posts. Glad he's home, but I'd be having serious words about his drinking

alwaysmovingforwards · 27/02/2023 07:19

If it's not a regular thing, then I'd just get on with life and not make a big thing of it.

Beezknees · 27/02/2023 07:21

Glad he's home. If it's a one off I wouldn't be phased, the hangover will be punishment enough. If it's a regular occurence, that's a different story.

I agree - it's not at all attractive. And bloody irresponsible at a work function. I only had words with him the other day about his drinking - to which he was very dismissive about (AKA in denial).

He has many redeemable personality traits, but he needs to take his drinking seriously or we're in trouble.

For fucks sake how old is he? Hes a grown man I would not be losing any sleep over this.

If only it was - it's not every week that he gets steaming drunk, or even month. But a few times throughout the year. But he drinks quite a lot generally and he needs to cut down.

Too old to be doing this.

What a Legend! Sorry that meant to say leg-end

😂 I have a similar story about my other half but it’s too outing.

just know I am wholly sympathetic to your experience x

Sparklfairy · 27/02/2023 07:27

An ex went on a work night out (he wasn't the boss though) in the nearest city. Got absolutely wankered, couldn't find a taxi and missed all last public transport back to our town. He rang me giggling saying he was going to walk the 7 miles home, like yours completely refused to listen to reason.

He did eventually find a taxi, stumbled home and fell backwards into a bush by the main entrance to the block of flats. And fell asleep there Confused

Also like yours, completely in denial about his drinking. I can speak from experience that he will not be receptive to a calm discussion about it when he's hanging out of his arse and suffering beer fear/hang-xiety, but it sounds like that discussion does need to happen.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 27/02/2023 07:43

Good advice @Sparklfairy - I'll wait until he's feeling a little more receptive. But I will be talking to him, no question about that.

My story from this weekend is not so dramatic, but why the hell did DH decide 3.45am was a good time to discuss DS(18)’s study plans (which he doesn’t agree with )

clearly after drinking it was never going to end well, and waking me at 3.45 was not a good move.
