Northumberland/Blythe for holiday?

Holibobbins · 25/02/2023 23:03

I just booked a wee getaway for here in July, little 3 bed apartment.

I've told 2 people and they both sort of laughed.

Is it not a good place for a family get away? TBH it was cheap for us so I just booked it without much research.

Is there stuff to do??

Northumberland, lovely, Blythe, just why??

Turefu · 25/02/2023 23:06

Why not? Lovely beach, friendly people, cheap.

Northumberland, lovely, Blythe, just why??

Because it's the only accommodation I could afford for us all?

Just tell them you're going to Northumberland. Give them the name of snoyber Town or village if they push.
North Northumberland is beautiful. I'd love to live in one of the villages near to where my husband grew up.

Cherrysoup · 25/02/2023 23:08

Just visit the fabulous beaches and be careful if you’re in Blythe itself.

Holibobbins · 25/02/2023 23:08

I didn't even say blythe.

Just Northumberland.

It's just for sleeping and eating. Right next to shops for picnic supplies.

We will be out everyday at different places.

I doubt it's anymore dangerous than where I live now!

You can rent a colourful chalet on the beach by the day in advance. Fabulous fish n chips, takeaway and diner just back from the beach and an Italian gelateria/ ice creamery. Long beach to walk along.

ItsaStupidSillyThing · 25/02/2023 23:10

Blythe or Blyth? 😂

LuluBlakey1 · 25/02/2023 23:12

Blyth town centre isn't up to much but there is a lovely beach and cafe and ice cream place. It is near to Newbiggin by the Sea which is a lovely bay, Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Whitley Bay and St Mary's Island are 10 minutes away by car and they are really nice, great for beach walks and a day out and if you are prepared to drive for half an hour the coast north of Blyth is beautiful.

Coxspurplepippin · 25/02/2023 23:13

Nowt wrong with Blyth. Use your apartment as a base to explore beautiful Northumberland - you'll have a fabulous time, it's the most amazing county.

Blythe or Blyth? 😂

Didn't realise I was on countdown, calm down Richard, it's just an extra 'E'. Really not that funny.

Northumberland is beautiful. Nothing wrong with Blyth either. Go to Barter Books and Alnwick, bamburgh is gorgeous for a day out followed by the chippy at seahouses. Lindisfarne, Holy Island, Newcastle, Durham, Beamish all in easy reach.

Fabulous. Take lots of photos and show your friends how good it is!

ItsaStupidSillyThing · 25/02/2023 23:17

Yeah I've heard Blyth is like anywhere with lovely and bad parts. It'll depend where you're staying/coming from. There are some beautiful houses and areas on the outskirts etc but town centre not so much (mind you not many town centres are great).

Vinorosso74 · 25/02/2023 23:18

Blyth town centre isn't great but location for getting elsewhere is great. I'm assuming you'll have a car? What age ranges before I start giving more ideas?
The beach isn't as pretty as some but it's decent and sandy. There's quite a nice ice cream shop just off the beach and the chippy is always busy. Free car park at the beach too.
Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth are no distance. You can easily drive to the beaches further up in Northumberland, there's castles, various towns to visit.

AdditionalCharacter · 25/02/2023 23:18

Loads to do outside of Blyth.

Blyth does have an amazing gelato shop/chippy (mermaid car park) which is right next to a lovely beach and park. Ridley Park just further along from it has a little splash park and big play park as well.

ItsaStupidSillyThing · 25/02/2023 23:19

@Holibobbins I wasn't reprimanding you, I just imagined it pronounced Bly-they which made me laugh.

LuluBlakey1 · 25/02/2023 23:19

If you go up to Seahouses you can go on a puffin and seals boat trip round the Farne Islands.
Alnmouth is beautiful.
Further north is Holy Island- stunning.
Amble and Druridge Bay areonly about15 minutes north of Blyth and they are both great- Amble is a small town on the coast - Harbour Inn does great fish and chips, you can walk along the pier and seal watch and see the fishing boats come in- fab views up the estuary to Warkworth (wellworth a visit) . Druridge Bay is a fantastic beach to walk on- miles of sand and usually empty.

I'm biased- Northumberland is my favourite place.

If you look on the Facebook page/blog Northeast Family Fun, you’ll find loads of fantastic things to do in and around the area where you’re staying. I don’t know Blyth itself that well but off the top of my head I think there is a great park with a splash pad. There is one beach to beat the other in Northumberland and you’ll be ideally placed to go to all of them, enjoy 😀

medianewbie · 25/02/2023 23:21

Northumberland is beautiful, empty, safe, clean & friendly. Only thing is it can be cold so take layers. Alnwkck (Castle Gardens, Barter books), Seahouses, Lindesfarne, loads of tiny pretty villages beaches, towns everywhere. Have a great time!

Wisterical · 25/02/2023 23:22

Ignore them, you'll have a fab family holiday! Blyth town is run down and a bit rough but plenty of cheap shops for picnic food and great charity shops for a rainy day and tbh I prefer the people round there than in the more expensive villages in Northumberland. Brilliant beach, great seafront chippy and top ice cream parlours. Plenty of other good places to visit not far away and if you've not got a car the buses are pretty good too. Enjoy looking forward to your holiday OP 😊

Wisterical · 25/02/2023 23:24

Highly recommend driving to Caster for crab sandwiches too.

TellMeMaMeMa · 25/02/2023 23:26

Blyth is not necessarily the first place I'd think of to go for a holiday but it's not a bad base. You can get a bus to Whitley Bay and from there you can walk to Cullercoats and Tynemouth. If you're in the car the whole of Northumberland is at your feet - Alnwick Gardens for example are just over 30 mins drive north. Ignore those who laughed - ignorant, snobby arseholes that they are. And have a lovely break!
