Northumberland/Blythe for holiday?

Holibobbins · 25/02/2023 23:03

I just booked a wee getaway for here in July, little 3 bed apartment.

I've told 2 people and they both sort of laughed.

Is it not a good place for a family get away? TBH it was cheap for us so I just booked it without much research.

Is there stuff to do??

But someone could say that about anywhere!

I would have let my younger children go to the shops

Drugs is no more than anywhere else and less than some places I could think of

Last time I walked all the way through - beach to nearby town - 2 years ago - I saw no evidence of drugs and saw nothing of concern

People suggested Alnwick is nice - yet on a Friday night it can be carnage if the various outlying village tribes meet up for a bust up - and there are drugs in Alnwick too

AdditionalCharacter · 26/02/2023 13:01

Loo at Seahouses or near Bamburgh, lots of,lovely little places around there.

midgemadgemodge · 26/02/2023 13:04

Lots of lovely and expensive places

Which will still have drugs if they have any locals left

BarkingBeachDog · 26/02/2023 13:17

Some posters should be ashamed of themselves. It's the OPs first holiday in years and there's nothing wrong with Blyth. It's not a crack den ffs.

Arguably the most beautiful coastline in the UK. Can you rebook OP? There's so much to do. Beamish is a brilliant day out and if you get the sun then bring on the beach at bamburgh is like being abroad. We needed beach tents it was that hot in the summer of 2021

Happydays321 · 26/02/2023 13:31

@BarkingBeachDog blyth to bamburgh is over an hours drive!
I don't think saying blyth isn't the best place to stay is being snobby!

december212 · 26/02/2023 13:35

If looking at Northumberland would Berwick Upon Tweed fit the bill? Not too far to Bamburgh Castle/beach, seahouses, Alnwick Castle, etc. but also on the east coast train line to Edinburgh for a day out?

midgemadgemodge · 26/02/2023 13:35

The op isn't daft - she can't afford "naice" places - she needs an ok place. Blyth is ok , beach is great , easy access to other good places by bus or car

  • it is nasty and snobby for people to be slagging off a perfectly ok place and recommending expensive places

It's nasty to be making out people in blyth are all druggies

It's nasty to lie that it's unsafe for children in blyth

midgemadgemodge · 26/02/2023 13:36

Berwick is no better or worse than blyth .

LadyIckenham · 26/02/2023 13:40

OP, I grew up in rural Northumberland many moons ago and Blyth didn't have the best reputation. But I regularly visit family there and Blyth was fantastic when the children were younger, we went several times. As others have said, it has a great beach with a large paved seafront which is good for buggies and an awesome fish & chip shop/gelateria.
It's not the most beautiful town but the people are friendly and it's well connected with buses to get out and about to some of the places upfront. I suspect your DC will love it, some of our best holidays have been in unglamorous spots in youth hostels. Nowhere is that far away if you have a car either and you'll have a handy base. And you're handy for Newcastle which is great for a rainy day.

Really hope you enjoy it, it's a lovely county.

hryllilegur · 26/02/2023 13:42

Just tell them you’re going to the Northumberland coast.

I don't think saying blyth isn't the best place to stay is being snobby!

I spent a lot of my early years in Scotswood, then Cruddas Park, I'm not being snobby to call Blyth a shit hole!

LadyIckenham · 26/02/2023 13:46

Ah, OP, just saw you cancelled, sorry to see that. Have a look at shilbottle near Alnwick; former mining village, quite a few holiday places now, I think, but less on the trail. Inland can be a bit cheaper than the coast but the sea is visible from there and a ten minute drive to Alnwick.

RampantIvy · 26/02/2023 13:47

Have a look at Amble @Holibobbins. It used to be a bit rough around the edges, but is quite up and coming now. Inland anywhere near Anlwick or Morpeth or even Rothbury makes you centrally placed to visit most of Northumberland.

If you can say when you want to go perhaps we can try and find you some accommodation?

midgemadgemodge · 26/02/2023 13:47

Blyth is not a shit hole
And I have family living there

It was bad in the 1980s with extreme unemployment and all the resulting problems but it's pulling itself together

RampantIvy · 26/02/2023 13:48

Shilbottle has a fabulous Indian restaurant @LadyIckenham

IForgotOurSong · 26/02/2023 13:55

I hope you manage to find somewhere round there that you’d prefer to stay as there is so much to do and see. There is a holiday park at Whitley Bay, it’s very close to the beach which is beautiful and close to other attractions like Tynemouth and all that Newcastle has to offer which is also a lot. I’m not sure how affordable it is, I think they do where you can split the payments over several months.

I have heard that Northumberland is stunning and want to go there, but don't have a car, so would need to go on a coach trip. I like castles, historic buildings, the coast and sea food.

Holibobbins · 26/02/2023 14:29

I'm not set on Northumberland. I just don't know where to go and that was suggested several times.

It's the first year we have a car so are able to drive someone more rural and go on days out.

There's 3 adults, 3 teens.

And ideal date is 14th July _21st

Driving distance of Manchester

Somewhere we can do walks, maybe a beach, places to eat and some touristy things.

Around 8/900 for accommodation

And we need 1 double and 4 separate beds.

So many are 2 doubles and 2 singles.

Thanks

I think Northumberland would work well for you and second Seahouses as somewhere that might be worth looking at.

I just looked. Completely out of budget I think :(

Whitney Bay and Seaton Delaval have lots of Air B & Bs, if that's any use?

december212 · 26/02/2023 15:25

Looking at airbnb for the dates you suggest, for a coastal break, there is a place called Atlantic Reach in Cornwall which comes within budget. No idea what the accommodation would be like (it does have enough beds though). Cornwall is fab for all ages.

LadyIckenham · 26/02/2023 15:27

I've heard that, @RampantIvy, although I haven't tried it. There's also a branch of the Running Fox, OP, which is a lovely local bakery chain.

Amble is another good bet, as mentioned below. Another good ice cream parlour and great fish off the boats. I'd keep away from the coast of North Northumberland to stay, you can get there easily by car and it's way overpriced now. Unless you go inland to somewhere like Wooler, but you'll be driving most places then. Cheviots are beautiful, though.

Chipsahoy · 26/02/2023 15:29

Blyth park and beach are lovely. Loads to explore a few miles down the road. So many amazing beaches all with in an hour and lots of lovely villages. Plus amazing countryside. I adore Northumberland.
