Northumberland/Blythe for holiday?

Holibobbins · 25/02/2023 23:03

I just booked a wee getaway for here in July, little 3 bed apartment.

I've told 2 people and they both sort of laughed.

Is it not a good place for a family get away? TBH it was cheap for us so I just booked it without much research.

Is there stuff to do??

Blyth doesn't have much going on but easy to get to Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, then up the coast to Bamburgh, Warkworth, Alnwick, Alnmouth - so many lush options. Are you driving? Northumberland is full of great stuff to do

HappydaysArehere · 26/02/2023 10:22

We were evacuated to Blythe when I was a tot. I remember a big beach. I have fancied a trip to Cullercoates as an artist called Winslow Homer(American) lived there for awhile painting lovely fishing and everyday scenes. He also painted in Blythe. I think his studio may be available to visit.

I love Northumberland! My middle class partner moved up from Hampshire as he prefers it up North. Blyth is a bit rough in some areas but nothing like some parts of Nottingham / Manchester etc.

You’ll have a great time! I was born and bred here and I’ve been all over the world but the best place on earth is Northumberland in my opinion. And I only live about 10 mins from Blyth

Harebrain · 26/02/2023 11:12

Northumberland is a great place for a holiday and Blyth is a great place to use as a base, especially if you got a cheap deal. Have a lovely time & 🤫 shh, don’t tell the Southerners. 😉

Lemondrizzle20 · 26/02/2023 11:16

Blyth itself has a bit of a reputation for being a little bit rough but that applies to dozens of small seaside places these days, even in posh totty Devon which Media City types idolise so much ( including lots who've never been there, or at least never lived there). But it's a great base, you can get up or down to the rest of the coast easily if you want or into Newcastle itself if you want to. Depending on how old your kids are check out the castles and National Trust places for events, and last time I was back home a few weeks ago I was amazed at how relatively warm it was, though the wind off the North sea can be ferocious.

The people laughing are just being eejits, go and have a great time, take layers of clothing as others have suggested, enjoy the friendliness and the gorgeous beaches and countryside and be proud that you've discovered one of the best kept secrets in England if not Britain. Just don't tell too many people though :) - I'm from Newcastle originally and would love it if Northumberland could stay just busy enough but not rammed to high heaven like most of the rest of these islands...

You should go to Beamish for a day out! Northumberland is fab for a holiday, so much to see and do.

Holibobbins · 26/02/2023 12:14

I cancelled it.

I'm on the lookout for another cheap holiday if nayine has any ideas.

Accommodation for 6 though and I really don't want a caravan so it's difficult.

Wisterical · 26/02/2023 12:19

😮 why did you cancel it? You've had loads of great ideas here.

doadeer · 26/02/2023 12:22

Why did you cancel it? There's loads of great days out around that area!

Happydays321 · 26/02/2023 12:28

Whats your budget and what dates are you after?

Happydays321 · 26/02/2023 12:30

We go regularly to Northumberland and it's a great destination but Blyth is a bit of of the way from the main tourist hotspots.

spidereggs · 26/02/2023 12:30

This is so mad. Why would you cancel it!!

You could spend the entire time on the beach and at Alnwick castle which is just about to open the biggest every outdoor play area, Do nothing else and still have the best ever time.

Rebook it quick

Holibobbins · 26/02/2023 12:31

Haverigg in the Lake District?

Why did I cancel it? Because people are saying its basically a crack den??

midgemadgemodge · 26/02/2023 12:31

Don't cancel !

Sone people are snobs

EwwSprouts · 26/02/2023 12:32

We like it up there so much we've had three holidays there in the last eight years. Last summer we took DS and his mate both age 18 and they had a great time.

spidereggs · 26/02/2023 12:33

I'm sure there are areas in most towns to avoid.

It's a holiday, it's what you make it.

No way I would have cancelled that.

midgemadgemodge · 26/02/2023 12:34

It's not a rich place , but it's safe to walk around , great beach

Sone people are snobs
And many people haven't really been there

PicklesAndTequila · 26/02/2023 12:35

I'm considering it now, on a major budget but happy to drive so a bit rough generally means cheap which is ideal for me.
I'm actually from the North East anyway, though further south and haven't been to any of the places recommended since I was a child.

midgemadgemodge · 26/02/2023 12:35

There's probably more drugs in Whitley bay than blyth ( because of money )

mibbelucieachwell · 26/02/2023 12:36

Northumberland is a fantastic holiday destination. I took my 8 and 10 year old there and we had a lovely time. The beaches there are beautiful and I would know, as someone from another British coastal area. It sounds great for a family your age.
Walking out to Holy Island on the tidal causeway is fun.
Alnwick castle is really good with so many different things to do there.
It's absolutely lovely.

londonmummy1966 · 26/02/2023 12:37

It's not cheap but your DC will love you forever if you book a coasteering session -- there are some groups that run them near Craster where there is plenty of jumping and not too much climbing.

Mammyloveswine · 26/02/2023 12:46

Big Dan Burn he's from Blyth, never ever beat Dan Burn! HWTL!

Op Northumberland is lovely, Blyth beach is gorgeous and is a great base to explore!

Ignore any snobby remarks and have a lovely holiday!

Holibobbins · 26/02/2023 12:47

We event had a holiday in years, I wnated a nice place to go and relax.

Being told not to let my kids go shops by themselves and that it's a haven for people with substance issues doenst really fit in with that

I will find something else.

Cancel it??? Nooooo! Blyth is fine, will be a handy base, and Northumberland is one of the nicest areas of the Uk. There are tons of gorgeous beaches, lovely places to visit, and endless activities to make some fantastic memories as a family. I’m actually gutted for you that you let a few twattish comments from a friend (?) ruin what could have been an amazing holiday. Truly, if you can rebook it I would.
