Hurrah for the voice of reason. Now this is the sort of person we need as Prime Minister.

I don't know why people are claiming what she's saying is so controversial.

5am - put the turnips in the slow cooker, get to job one

5pm - come home, 'nips down ya, quick kip, down to job 2 by 6:30.

Home by 2am, kids are still awake, fuelled by the unparalleled energy source of turnip starch, everyone has a cuddle and it's off to bed.

This is how people lived in generations gone by, state handouts have made people soft and weak. It's pathetic.

Unfortunately all the mines are closed now, and there aren't many homes with proper chimneys so it isn't easy to gt your kids out to wrk as soon as they can walk.

Perhaps they could pick litter at the sides of motorways?

She IS a turnip

No she isn't.

She lacks the charm.

And the looks.

If people had been forward-thinking enough, they would have made a large donation to the Tory party at some point, and then they would have cashed in with a PPE contract for millions. Sadly, people just don't think ahead these days. They have no-one to blame but themselves for that.

You are spot on - people just don't think ahead.

If you've got no money it's your own fault - you should have just inherited some, for heaven's sake!

midgemadgemodge · 24/02/2023 11:17

Pre industrial era people worked less not more

It's only when you get factory owners treating people like resources that exploitation starts

BIWI · 24/02/2023 11:19

... and if you haven't inherited squillions, it's your own fault for choosing the wrong parents

Bitter second wife is such a bad look. There is no “us” when it comes to child maintenance, you pay nothing @WorkingFromHomeRocks, why shouldn’t your bloke pay for his kids?

Sorry, did you READ my post. My husband does pay for his kids. What we feel resentful about is that his ex-wife thinks we should support her life choice of working part time term time. What’s that got to do with child maintenance? The receiving parent also has to support their child, which I should know myself having been a single parent myself for nine years with an ex who wouldn’t pay a penny.

WorkingFromHomeRocks · 24/02/2023 11:23

CatMattress · 24/02/2023 09:02

You mean the NHS jobs that expect you to work overtime for no extra pay and don't actually pay enough to live on to the point half the workforce is striking - those jobs?

Not all jobs are like that. Just pick one that doesn’t expect overtime. I accept that plenty do, hence the strikes. However, I work 9-5pm, as do my colleagues and that’s that.

Yes, I did read your post, you clearly didn’t read mine. You’re still saying “we”. It’s not you paying, it’s your bloke.

To be honest, it's hard to believe that people can be either so gullible or so thick that they can't see what a load of empty drivel such statements are.

The same is true of the 'you should upskill/ get a better paid job' .
Those who are able and get the opportunity already do that, but even if it were possible for everyone to do that - which it clearly isn't - the the country would quickly be in even deeper sh* than it is now, because there would literally be no one left to do all those low-paid but essential* jobs The country would grind to a halt.

No job , however unskilled it is, should be so badly paid that someone doing it full time cannot afford a basic standard of living.

Hear, hear @Oldnproud

EVERY labourer is worthy of his/her hire - and EVERY human being is entitled to a roof over their head, decent food on their table and warm clothes on their back - and time, too, to enjoy their family life.

No-one should be working all of God's hours just to scrimp a penurious existence.

I have often (seriously) thought that the industrial revolution was one of the worst things that happened, both to humankind and the planet.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/02/2023 11:32

Theresa hasn't quite worked out that it's not so much just wages as the costs of just getting by. If you have insufficient affordable social housing and no caps on private rentals then in vast swathes of the country and particularly in the southern half of England you are forcing people into impossible situations. Housing is about 70% of the problem apart from very very cheap areas (and jobs and transportation are often an issue in those areas) if there was sufficient social housing or private rental caps then a lot more people on modest incomes could manage.

We are a couple. If that’s the only part you’re getting hung up on then that’s, frankly, ridiculous. Our money goes into our joint account. You’re focussing on completely the wrong issue here.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 24/02/2023 12:35

She has a point in a roundabout way. We have an issue with economic inactivity but that is largely to do with long term sickness, which continues to increase year on year.
Pre-covid there were 76k people economically inactive of which 15k were long term sick.
Currently its 516k with 352k long term sick.

This is the upshot of the Tories wrecking the NHS. People are being left to languish

Solonge · 24/02/2023 13:00

So the nurses, midwives, carers, teachers etc who are paid under £28k a year and some under £20k a year…working more than full time as we dont get over time in the NHS or state schools and we use foodbanks, we should all work more? Really? When the fat fuck MPs in the Tory party get £83k a year Basic and people like 30p Lee Anderson claim £300k in expenses whilst stating he employs an assistant for minimum wage who eats meals she produces for 30p….. I sometimes think people in the UK have been lobotomised.

Not just the NHS, but all the preventative public health support that has been cut, the closing of local sports facilities and so on is having an impact.

I don’t know, NHS Jobs/Civil Service website/Reed/Indeed. Take some responsibility and look for one, don’t moan there’s no jobs because there are millions of them 🙄

Most of the jobs on these sites are either highly skilled or so called essential worker ones on low wages, long hours etc.

But lets say it was possible and everyone took your advice, who would do the low paid work we all rely on?

People like you live on another cossetted planet.

mibbelucieachwell · 24/02/2023 13:07

Economic activity: the only worthwhile activity. Abandon your family, slog yourself into the ground for big companies who buy housing as investments making it even harder for ordinary people to own their own property and hiking up the demand and therefore cost of renting, take on a ton of stress which will sooner or later damage your health in your job. Anything less is worthless. Absolutely worthless.

Yes!
Just because you don't get paid for something doesn't you're not contributing to society.
Most of the work that keeps the world turning is unpaid work done by women! Then you have shareholders, rentiers, highly paid bosses and CEOs creaming off the work of everyone else.
Most people get paid very little for what they do and then a few people at the top hoover up and hoard all the money

MaidOfSteel · 24/02/2023 13:12

The last job I had in care work, we were told in a meeting by the owner of the care home chain that , “no one doing this job is worth more than £5 and hour, but we begrudgingly pay minimum wage because we have to. You could train monkeys to do this job and we would do if we could, they would complain less”.

This was when staff asked if there was going to ever be any sort of uplift in pay.

Then the care home owner fucked off in his Bentley.

That’s the sort of attitude low paid workers are up against, we are just disposable scum bags, after all.

But hey, we’ll all upskill and then who will clean your grandmother at 3am or comfort her when she’s screaming in terror because of her dementia.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 24/02/2023 13:15

Tories have always behaved this way. Didn’t Edwina Currie tell freezing pensioners to just put on another jumper?

@Emotionalsupportviper sorry that sounded like I was having a dig at you. I didn’t mean to quote you.

I wonder how he's s doing now that care homes can't get any staff?
His attitude doesn't surprise me but it's shocking that he actually said it to his employees😬
I'd be hoping that he would have said something to the wrong person by now and gotten some sort of comeuppance?

Thesharkradar · 24/02/2023 13:31

Also monkeys would have ripped his face and genitals off
