@SockGoddess

'but it is true that meat is very bad for the planet.'

That's a bit of a worry because I've discovered I'm largely made out of meat. As are most animals apparently, except the crocodile which I think is made up of a number of conjoined handbags.

This is the best thing i’ve seen on mumsnet for weeks.

But there are also other alternatives, like linen and ramie, some types of viscose and cupro etc that are more sustainable

Cupro is stuffed full of chemicals. It’s produced in a sustainable way, but uses endless chemicals.

Such a ridiculous argument. Methods can be improved upon,don’t be do disingenuous.

I'm not actually arguing, to be honest. Just sharing my opinion. I'm not sure how that is disingenuous? Unless you want a feature length documentary about food supply chains, I'm not going to be able to detail every little thing.

Do you REALLY think that every ounce of meat-substitute plant-based chicken in the supermarket comes from a good source?

You say disingenuous, I say naive...

I have a close friend who is a vegan sustainability influencer, and in our last chat he was considering going back to eggs himself, because he's concerned about the influx of cheap and unsustainably sourced tofu etc.

You just made the statement, without saying why you think so without any back up information, and asking us to prove you wrong?
Isn't it better for you to start the thread by telling us why you think being vegan is bad for the planet?

People are bad for the planet. It would get on fine if left to itself as would every other species on it.

I'm vegan. I haven't researched the impact of vegan food on the planet. I strongly suspect it would depend on how much processed meat substitutes and the like you consume. If your diet is based mainly on lentils, veg, beans and so on, then I'm pretty sure it's impact would be much less than that of meat.

However, what I do know is that being vegan is less damaging to animals than a meat/dairy diet. And that's what matters to me.
