What are your various car brand stereotypes?

Just that really. Was having a conversation about people’s perceptions of various car brands recently and found it interesting. The original conversation stemmed from a disagreement over whether Volvo is a premium brand or not; they weren’t when I was a child—they seemed to be mainly driven by university professors—but now they are quite expensive and also
nice inside. Does that make them premium, or is it more about the perception of the brand (for example, everyone acknowledges that Mercedes, Audi, BMW, RR, etc are premium) that is the defining factor? Is Tesla premium or just cutting edge tech?

Thought this was going to be about the stereotype of the drivers.

Aston Martin, Classic Jaguar - older rich male.
BMW - big mouthed wankers.
Audi - arrogant, don't know how to use indicators.
Toyota - taxi.
Any 4x4 - school mum made in Chelsea wannabe.
Ford estate car, Volvo, Volkswagen +Scoda - dependable family car driver.
Other ford eg fiesta - boy racer.
Fiat - old lady.
Dacia - skint family needing reliable car

Multipleexclamationmarks · 20/02/2023 14:55

Oh and Subaru - drug dealer

OhNoNotThatAgain · 20/02/2023 15:00

My perception of many vehicle makes and models is influenced by whether I think the drivers are twats.
😂

Oh and Subaru - drug dealer

This is an interesting one! When I think of Subaru I think of the Forester, usually owned by people who want a tank for hiking and camping. I guess there are sportier models that give the drug dealer vibe?

The only one I really judge is Range Rover.

There are loads round here. They keep getting nicked because there’s a flaw in the keyless security, it can be hacked easily. This is well known, discussed all over the internet, local forums etc. And yet, people keep buying them, at enormous cost and huge insurance premiums.

If this doesn’t make them idiots, I’m not sure what does.

(Plus they’re flashy wanker cars anyway Grin)

There's an update for it now, to stop relay thefts

minipie · 20/02/2023 16:21

That’s good Rebellious. Still lots of posts on our local forum about stolen Range Rovers - I guess most people have older models.

Lonelycrab · 20/02/2023 16:21

BMW- most likely car to be tailgating
Audi- second most likely to be tailgating
Volvo-drive using the entire width of road, get out my way oncoming cars
Honda Jazz- old lady
Ferrari- small willy
Focus or Fiesta st- boy/girl racer obvs
Subaru Impreza- middle aged boy/girl racer
Range Rover- guaranteed to think the motorway speed limit doesn’t apply to them. Probably deals drugs too.

newtb · 20/02/2023 16:22

Back in the 80s it was the Volvo drivers that were considered arrogant. Times change. Even made the Today programme on radio 4.

Yep and also probably haven't had it updated yet as well, there are letters going out to tell people but obviously it's up to them to book it!

MintJulia · 20/02/2023 16:31

Last time I replaced my car I asked an RAC man which brand was he called to least often.

He said Volvo. I haven't regretted taking his advice yet 🙂

Ihateboris · 20/02/2023 16:34

I drive a mini...what's my stereotype??😃

Range Rovers, I can't help it I just loathe the owners on sight

Quite harsh! But a house near me has three white RRs parked in the drive all the time. Who needs 3 RRs! That almost never go anywhere?! Insane

StillWantingADog · 20/02/2023 16:41

Funny I have been loyal to Hyundai last 12 years or so. We don’t seem to have a stereotype … that I’m aware of anyway

SinnerBoy · 20/02/2023 16:48

Audi / BMW / Mercedes = selfish arseholes on the phone, who don't need to indicate, or maintain lane discipline.

Range Rover = complete arseholes, dangerous tailgaters, speed everywhere, all the time.

Volvo = most likely to pull out on bikers and say, "Sorry, didn't see you," "Well, it's your fault, bikes are dangerous / you were speeding."

I've got a Volvo.

And three motorbikes.

SlaveToTheVibe · 20/02/2023 16:48

Every single engineer I know drives a Skoda. So they all say it’s because they’re well made and reliable. The new Volvo.

BMWs are boring now, everybody has them. Including me my husband and my son. The new Mondeo!

Tesla are a bit twatty, but maybe I’m just jealous because I love their gull wing doors but they’re like the new BMW. Flash. I’d love one!

and we all know RR/LR are just daft
unless they’re covered in mud n straw. All the farmers here drive Mitsubishi

maranella · 20/02/2023 16:58

German cars - reliable and well-made, mid-price to expensive
Italian cars - glamorous, but unreliable
Japanese cars - reliable and cheap, but some are quite naff. Nissan Micras are old lady cars.
British cars - mixed bag and some foreign types like Ford and Nissan made in the UK. I'd love an Aston Martin and would be happy to buy a Jaguar.
Tesla - expensive and I wouldn't want the ball-ache of an electric and worrying about where to charge it on longer trips.
Volvo and Skoda - solid, reliable, safe, but a bit dull. I used to have a Skoda though and liked it.

PortIsaac · 20/02/2023 17:00

BMW being the new Mondeo is so true!

We're currently house hunting and we seem to think of the neighbours like:

nicer friendly homes - Volvo and Skodas.
potential drug dealers and asbo - RR

Whenever we see a Tesla out and about someone makes a joke about Elon.

MishaBukvic · 20/02/2023 17:15

Any Mercedes with blacked out windows- drug dealer/ gang member

Fiat 500s - usually lovely young people who are cheery, polite and enjoying their independence

Mercedes sprinters - angry couriers. Always angry and rushing/speeding/driving up pavements

Honda Jazz - usually someone's Gran

Ford CMax - usually someone's Granda

White BMW - usually parked outside a white and grey house with anthracite windows and a grey interior.

Land Rover Defender - the farmers/ off roaders / where Hunter wellies are mandatory.

Deathbyfluffy · 20/02/2023 17:19

Ylvamoon · 20/02/2023 12:57

BeetleyCarapace Skoda is owned by VW...

Not quite - they’re owned by the VAG group, who also own VW.
Small difference but still important to differentiate

About to get a Honda Jazz - I'm actually bizarrely delighted by that stereotype!

senior30 · 20/02/2023 17:26

I see the stereotype against Range Rover drivers and shock people every time I drive because life is too short to not let everybody in/out and be courteous. After 3 years of owning one I do also hate the things with a passion

user15297345 · 20/02/2023 17:32

Range Rover, Audi, BMW, Porsche SUV: on tick or possibly owned by flash selfish tossers who can't drive and have little consideration for other road users.

Other cars: whatever

In the UK, Subarus are niche Japanese 4x4s bought mainly by farmers.

Farmers?! You’ve never visited Bradford!

Or driven a subaru Impreza.
